Abstract:
A revised version of a paper presented in English at the "Remembering for the Future" conference, Oxford, July 1988. Examines the history of relations between the Baltic peoples and the Jews in light of the massive participation of the former in the murder of Jews during the Holocaust. States that a crisis arose in their relations during World War II due to the Soviet occupation of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. The Jews were seen as representatives of the despised Soviet authority and, after the German invasion, thousands of Jews were killed by Baltic nationals. Relates economic, political, emotional, and moral factors which contributed to the deterioration of relations during the Holocaust. Mentions relations between Jews and Baltic émigrés after the war, and the bitter polemic in which the latter minimized the Baltics' collaboration and defended accused war criminals. Notes that the younger generation of Baltic émigrés evinces a new and more open approach to the Holocaust.
