    Abstract: "Nazis, Islamic Antisemitism, and the Middle East demonstrates the impact on the Arab world of Nazi ideology and propaganda in the 1930s and beyond. In 1937, with the brochure "Islam and Judaism", a new form of Jew hatred came into the world: Islamic antisemitism. The Nazis did everything they could to anchor this new message of hate through their Arabic-language radio propaganda. The book sheds light on this hitherto unknown chapter of Germany's past. It presents new archive findings that show how the image of Jews in Islam changed between 1937 and 1948 under the influence of this propaganda and other Nazi activities. This fresh look at Middle East history allows for a more precise assessment of the present: What exactly is "Islamic antisemitism"? How is it currently manifesting itself in Germany and France? What makes it particularly dangerous? Only when we understand how strongly modern Middle East history is shaped by the aftermath of National Socialism will we be able to correctly interpret the hatred of Jews in this region and its echo among Muslims in Europe and develop adequate countermeasures. From the Galician shtetl of Mościska (Mostyska)—now in Ukraine near the Polish border—the story follows a Jewish family through two World Wars, deportation to a labor camp under the Soviet regime, through Central Asia, the Middle East, to America. These are the lost worlds the author vividly brings to life. Holding onto Jewish tradition in the darkest of places, surviving mass, grave human rights violations. 80% of Polish Jews, who survived the Second World War, did so through the Soviet Union. Meier Landau and his family escaped Germans, but were deported by the Soviets from Lviv, along with thousands of other Jewish families. This is their story—prisoners in a world so strange, it is almost unbelievable to them.     Abstract: In 1290, Jews were expelled from England and subsequently largely expunged from English historical memory. Yet for two centuries they occupied important roles in medieval English society. England's Jews revisits this neglected chapter of English history-one whose remembrance is more important than ever today, as antisemitism and other forms of racism are on the rise.Historian John Tolan tells the story of the thousands of Jews who lived in medieval England. Protected by the Crown and granted the exclusive right to loan money with interest, Jews financed building projects, provided loans to students, and bought and rented out housing. Historical texts show that they shared meals and beer, celebrated at weddings, and sometimes even ended up in bed with Christians.Yet Church authorities feared the consequences of Jewish contact with Christians and tried to limit it, though to little avail. Royal protection also proved to be a double-edged sword: when revolts broke out against the unpopular king Henry III, some of the rebels, in debt to Jewish creditors, killed Jews and destroyed loan records. Vicious rumors circulated that Jews secretly plotted against Christians and crucified Christian children. All of these factors led Edward I to expel the Jews from England in 1290. Paradoxically, Tolan shows, thirteenth-century England was both the theatre of fruitful interreligious exchange and a crucible of European antisemitism

    Abstract: Hinter der Tarnbezeichnung "Aktion Erntefest" verbirgt sich ein weitgehend unbekanntes Kapitel des Holocaust. In einer groß angelegten Aktion ermordeten deutsche SS- und Polizeiangehörige am 3. und 4. November 1943 im Konzentrationslager Majdanek und den Arbeitslagern Poniatowa und Trawniki mehr als 42 000 Jüdinnen und Juden. Nur wenigen gelang es, den Mördern zu entkommen. Dieser Band versammelt erstmals Zeugnisse Überlebender in deutscher Übersetzung. Einführende Texte geben einen Einblick in die Hintergründe der Mordaktion.

    Abstract: Secrecy and Esoteric Writing in Kabbalistic Literature examines the strategies of esoteric writing that Kabbalists have used to conceal secrets in their writings, such that casual readers will only understand the surface meaning of their texts while those with greater insight will grasp the internal meaning. In addition to a broad description of esoteric writing throughout the long literary history of Kabbalah, this work analyzes kabbalistic secrecy in light of contemporary theories of secrecy. It also presents case studies of esoteric writing in the work of four of the first kabbalistic authors—Abraham ben David, Isaac the Blind, Ezra ben Solomon, and Asher ben David—and thereby helps recast our understanding of the earliest stages of kabbalistic literary history.The book will interest scholars in Jewish mysticism and Jewish philosophy, as well as those working in medieval Jewish history.     Abstract: A close reading of postrevolutionary Russian and Yiddish literature and film recasts the Soviet Jew as a novel cultural figure: not just a minority but an ambivalent character navigating between the Jewish past and Bolshevik modernity. The Russian Revolution of 1917 transformed the Jewish community of the former tsarist empire. In particular, the Bolshevik government eliminated the requirement that most Jews reside in the Pale of Settlement in what had been Russia’s western borderlands. Many Jews quickly exited the shtetls, seeking prospects elsewhere. Some left for bigger cities, others for Europe, America, or Palestine. Thousands tried their luck in the newly established Jewish Autonomous Region in the Far East, where urban merchants would become tillers of the soil. For these Jews, Soviet modernity meant freedom, the possibility of the new, and the pressure to discard old ways of life. This ambivalence was embodied in the Soviet Jew—not just a descriptive demographic term but a novel cultural figure. In insightful readings of Yiddish and Russian literature, films, and reportage, Sasha Senderovich finds characters traversing space and history and carrying with them the dislodged practices and archetypes of a lost Jewish world. There is the Siberian settler of Viktor Fink’s Jews in the Taiga, the folkloric trickster of Isaac Babel, and the fragmented, bickering family of Moyshe Kulbak’s The Zemlenyaners, whose insular lives are disrupted by the march of technological, political, and social change. There is the collector of ethnographic tidbits, the pogrom survivor, the émigré who repatriates to the USSR. Senderovich urges us to see the Soviet Jew anew, as not only a minority but also a particular kind of liminal being. How the Soviet Jew Was Made emerges as a profound meditation on culture and identity in a shifting landscape

The world's first ghetto and the origin of the English word, the term simultaneously works to mark specific places and their histories, and as a global symbol that evokes themes of identity, exile, marginalization, and segregation.     Abstract: Early Islam has emerged as a lively site of historical investigation, and scholars have challenged the traditional accounts of Islamic origins by drawing attention to the wealth of non-Islamic sources that describe the rise of Islam. A Prophet Has Appeared brings this approach to the classroom. This collection provides students and scholars with carefully selected, introduced, and annotated materials from non-Islamic sources dating to the early years of Islam. These can be read alone or alongside the Qur'an and later Islamic materials. It is through the symbolic forms of language that the human world of value is revealed—this is where religious scholar Michael Fishbane dwells in his latest contribution to Jewish thought. In Fragile Finitude, Fishbane clears new ground for a theological life through a novel reinterpretation of the Book of Job.     Abstract: "Jewish texts and traditions. An expression of this was the remarkable turn to Bible translation. In the century and a half between Moses Mendelssohn's pioneering translation and the final one by Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig, German Jews produced sixteen different translations of at least the Pentateuch. Buber and Rosenzweig famously critiqued bourgeois German Judaism as a craven attempt to establish social respectability to facilitate Jews' entry into the middle class through a vapid, domesticated account of Judaism. Exploring Bible translations by Moses Mendelssohn, Leopold Zunz, and Samson Raphael Hirsch, I argue that each sought to ground a "reformation" of Judaism along bourgeois lines, which involved aligning Judaism with a Protestant concept of religion. They did so because they saw in bourgeois values the best means to serve God and the authentic actualization of Jewish tradition. Through their learned, creative Bible translations, Mendelssohn, Zunz, and Hirsch presented distinct visions of middle-class Judaism that affirmed Jewish nationhood while lighting the path to a purposeful, emotionally rich, spiritual life grounded in ethical responsibility"--

    Abstract: Durch die weite Ausbreitung und Zerstreuung des Judentums entstanden früh Orte des Lehrens und religiösen Lebens neben dem Tempel.     Abstract: Kurz nach der Staatsgründung Israels und dem darauf folgenden Unabhängigkeitskrieg im Mai 1948 bereiste Koestler als Journalist das Land. Aus seinen damals entstandenen Tagebuchaufzeichnungen und Reportagen stellte er diesen Bericht zusammen, der 1949 erstmals erschien. Rezension: Der Journalist und Schriftsteller Arthur Koestler (1905-1983), der internationale Bestseller wie "Sonnenfinsternis" schrieb (zuletzt 2018), war von seiner Jugend an Zionist und reiste mehrfach nach Palästina. Kurz nach der Staatsgründung Israels im Mai 1948 berichtete er für mehrere Monate für eine Reihe von Zeitungen aus dem Land, gegen das die Nachbarländer unmittelbar nach der Unabhängigkeit den Krieg erklärt hatten und führte Tagebuch. Die in diesem Band enthaltenen chronologischen Aufzeichnungen aus dieser Zeit sind Teil eines 1949 auf Englisch erschienenen Buches und liegen erstmals auf Deutsch vor. Mit kritischer Distanz, um Ausgewogenheit bemüht, berichtet er vom Krieg, von seinen Reisen durchs Land, von den Leuten, denen er begegnet. - Ein Zeitdokument, das unmittelbar und ausführlich Einblicke in die ersten Monate des jungen Staates und den israelischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg gibt und vor allem für diejenigen, die sich tiefer mit der konfliktreichen Geschichte Israels beschäftigen wollen, von Interesse sein könnte. It was a historical moment of unstable religious ideas and identities, before the rigid turn taken by Spanish Catholicism by the middle of the sixteenth century; a period in which the physical and symbolic borders separating the three religions were transformed and redefined but still remained extraordinarily porous. The collection argues that the aggressive tone of many polemical texts has until now blinded historiography to the interconnected nature of social and cultural intimacy, above all in dialogue and cultural transfer in later medieval Iberia.     Abstract: Over the last decades, studies on cultural memory have taken a 'spectral turn'. They have explored the potential of haunting metaphors for addressing past instances of violence that affect present cultural realities. Zuzanna Dziuban contributes to the discussions on the figure of the ghost by enquiring into its culturally and historically located modality: the emergence of Jewish ghosts in contemporary Polish popular culture, literature and critical art. Locating this new interest in Jewish ghosts on the map of other Polish (and Jewish) ghostologies, this study seeks to explore the cultural and political functions of post-Holocaust haunted imaginaire.

    Abstract: "We treat the word Judaism as a given for describing the religion of Jews. But the term is in some ways socially constructed, rather than inevitable. After all, exactly what would constitute "authentic" Judaism? Some have argued that there are multiple Judaisms, going in the direction of plurals that so many scholars find satisfying. But Boyarin takes a different tack, proposing that before the modern era there should be no "Judiasm" at all. For Boyarin, there was no sphere of life that can be called Judaism that was separate from the political, artistic, and cultural elements of life. Moreover, he argues that Judaism is a Christian coinage to serve Christian discursive purposes by setting what we call Judaism in opposition to Christianity and that the term has little utility for Jews. The various Jewish languages have no such concept and no such term. He believes that categories drawn from outside the culture are anachronistic, not informative. Boyarin will be making a case for substituting Jewry for Judaism. Die bedeutendsten davon präsentiert diese mustergültige wissenschaftliche Edition. In einer bewegenden, kaum zu ertragenden Anklage, die sich zu einem literarisch verdichteten Appell an die Nachgeborenen steigert, hielt der aus Suwalki stammende, 1942 mit seiner Familie nach Auschwitz deportierte S. Gradowski detailgenau fest, was dort geschah und was das Sonderkommando zu tun hatte: Die Opfer für die Gaskammern vorzubereiten und die Leichen zu verbrennen. Im Anhang Faksimiles, Bibliografie. - Gradowskis verzweifelte Anrufung der Menschheit liegt hier erstmals vollständig in neuer Übersetzung vor.     Abstract: Flucht und Migration prägten die Stadt- und Kulturgeschichte Hamburgs von der Neuzeit bis zur Gegenwart. Hamburg ist zentraler Flucht- und Transitort in zeithistorischen Migrationskontexten wie der französischen Emigration in den 1790ern und der Auswanderung in die USA ab 1800, aber auch für Flucht und Deportationen im Nationalsozialismus sowie Migrationsbewegungen nach 1945 bis heute.Der Band versammelt interdisziplinäre Beiträge namhafter Autor_innen, welche die Vielfalt dieser Aspekte betrachten - auch unter Einbezug von Untersuchungen der gegenwärtigen Wohnpraktiken von Geflüchteten in Hamburg. Damit eröffnen sich neue Perspektiven auf die Geschichte der Migration in Hamburg.

    Abstract: In The Authority of Law in the Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism , Vroom identifies a development in the authority of written law that took place in early Judaism. Ever since Assyriologists began to recognize that the Mesopotamian law collections did not function as law codes do today—as a source of binding obligation—scholars have grappled with the question of when the Pentateuchal legal corpora came to be treated as legally binding. Vroom draws from legal theory to provide a theoretical framework for understanding the nature of legal authority, and develops a methodology for identifying instances in which legal texts were treated as binding law by ancient interpreters. This method is applied to a selection of legal-interpretive texts: Ezra-Nehemiah, Temple Scroll, the Qumran rule texts, and the Samaritan Pentateuch

    Abstract: Dem erinnerungskulturellen Umgang mit dem Holocaust steht ein tiefgehender Wandel bevor: Wenn die letzten Überlebenden in den nächsten Jahren sterben, geht die Erinnerung vom kommunikativen in das kulturelle Gedächtnis über. Zugleich wird die sich erinnernde Gesellschaft immer heterogener und die Schüler_innen gehören inzwischen vollständig zur Generation der digital natives. Online-Archive mit videografierten Interviews bieten angesichts dieser Entwicklungen scheinbar eine Zukunftsperspektive für den Unterricht. Die didaktischen Herausforderungen, die der Einsatz von videografierten Zeitzeug_inneninterviews aufwirft, sind dabei vielfältig. Die vorliegende Studie ist die erste im Bereich der historisch-politischen Bildung, die empirisch abgesicherte Befunde zu den relevanten Fragen liefert: Kann die in der Theoriebildung zu digitalisierten Zeugnissen behauptete 'Begegnung' mit den Überlebenden auf dem Bildschirm tatsächlich festgestellt werden? Sind die in der Theorie benannten 'Immersionseffekte' der Interviews für die unterrichtliche Praxis nutzbar zu machen? Welche 'eigen-sinnigen Sinnbildungen' nehmen Lernende in der Arbeit mit den lebensgeschichtlichen Narrativen vor? Wo verlaufen die Grenzen des Mediums gerade auch im Blick auf leistungsschwächere Schüler_innen an Sekundarschulen? Wie müsste Unterricht in der Zukunft anders gedacht und gestaltet werden, um eine inklusivere Holocaust Education ohne (rassistische) Ausgrenzungen zu ermöglichen? Quelle: Klappentext.

    Abstract: In diesem Buch geht es um die große Menge kleiner Nazis. Die Sammlung von Berichten des amerikanischen Professors polnischer Abstammung, Theodore Fred Abel, ist einmalig, sie ist die wertvollste Primärquelle zur Frage, warum Menschen zu Nazis wurden, was zu ihrer Radikalisierung beitrug. Von den im Sommer 1934 geschriebenen ursprünglich 683 Berichten sind 581 erhalten. Es gibt keine vergleichbaren Quellen, die auch nur annähernd an die Fülle des Materials von 3.700 Seiten, den Reichtum an Details, die Freimütigkeit der Darstellung und die Intensität der Lebensbeschreibungen heran kommt. In diesen unmittelbaren Schilderungen findet sich ungefiltertes Gedankengut, nicht durch Scham späterer Erkenntnisse getrübt, durch Holocaust, Krieg und Untergang. Abel wollte wissen, wer diese Menschen sind, wie die Hitler-Bewegung in ihr Bewusstsein trat. Diese Biogramme beantworten erstmals in die Tiefe gehend Beweggründe und Haltung der Nazis.     Abstract: Trotz fortschreitender Säkularisierung sind neue religiöse Gruppen sehr erfolgreich und ziehen durch verschiedene Marketing-Strategien jährlich hunderte von Menschen an. Was genau macht ihre Attraktion aus?Eine Antwort darauf gibt Nicole Maria Bauers religionswissenschaftliche Analyse des »Kabbalah Centre«, einer Ende der 1960er Jahre in den USA gegründeten neureligiösen Bewegung, die seit einigen Jahren auch in Deutschland vertreten ist und der sich Menschen aus unterschiedlichen religiösen Kontexten anschließen.Die transdisziplinäre Studie beleuchtet die Konstruktion religiöser Identität auf institutioneller und personaler Ebene und entwirft einen neuen Ansatz für deren Untersuchung. Dabei werden auch aktuelle Trends wie etwa die Frage nach »Religious Branding« aufgegriffen und mit neueren Ansätzen aus der Identitätsforschung verknüpft.

    Abstract: Simha Rotem, genannt Kazik, nahm als Jugendlicher am Warschauer Ghettoaufstand teil. Er war 15 Jahre alt, als die NS-Armee in Polen einfiel, und 19, als der Aufstand am 19. April 1943 begann. Er organisierte die Flucht der letzten überlebenden Kämpfer aus dem brennenden Ghetto durch das Labyrinth der Abwasserkanäle. 1944 beteiligte sich Kazik am Warschauer Aufstand und bereitete anschließend noch vor Kriegsende Fluchtwege nach Israel vor. Ohne nachträglich zu romantisieren oder zu verklären, beschreibt er die schier unvorstellbare Härte des Kampfes gegen die Nazis. Mit seinen Erinnerungen erfüllte er die innere Verpflichtung, Zeugnis abzulegen über die Geschichte des polnischen Judentums in den Tagen der Vernichtung und des Widerstands. Quelle: Klappentext.

    Abstract: In Nuptial Symbolism in Second Temple Writings, the New Testament and Rabbinic Literature , André Villeneuve examines the ancient Jewish concept of the covenant between God and Israel, portrayed as a marriage dynamically moving through salvation history. This nuptial covenant was established in Eden but damaged by sin; it was restored at the Sinai theophany, perpetuated in the Temple liturgy, and expected to reach its final consummation at the end of days. The authors of the New Testament adopted the same key moments of salvation history to describe the spousal relationship between Christ and the Church. In their typological treatment of these motifs, they established an exegetical framework that would anticipate the four senses of Scripture later adopted by patristic and medieval commentators

    Abstract: Das Judentum ist als pädagogisch wirkender Kulturzusammenhang anzusehen, der global und interkulturell zu betrachten ist. In drei Etappen – von der Binnenperspektive zu transkulturellen Aneignungen – stellt der Band die Frage nach dem Zusammenhang von Bildung und Kultur neu. Im ersten Teil werden pädagogische Strukturen des kulturell institutionalisierten Judentums aus einer Binnenperspektive historisch begründet. Dabei geraten ihre Einflüsse von Moderne und Aufklärung ebenso in den Blick wie ihre Ursprünge in der Thorah.     Abstract: This study examines the relationship between time and history in Second Temple literature. Numerous sources from that period express a belief that Jewish history began with an act of covenant formation and proceeded in linear fashion until the exile, an unprecedented event which severed the present from the past. The authors of Ben Sira, Jubilees , the Animal Apocalypse , and 4 Ezra responded to this theological challenge by claiming instead that Jewish history began at creation. Between creation and redemption, history unfolds as a series of static, repeating patterns that simultaneously account for the disappointments of the Second Temple period and confirm the eternal nature of the covenant. As iterations of timeless, cyclical patterns, the difficult post-exilic present and the glorious redemption of the future emerge as familiar, unremarkable, and inevitable historical developments

Jahrestags der Befreiung von Auschwitz im Januar 2015 haben "Spiegel"-Redakteure 20 Überlebende des Vernichtungslager in Europa, Amerika und Israel getroffen, die als Jüdinnen und Juden, als Roma oder wegen ihres Widerstands gegen die Nazis dorthin deportiert worden waren. Die kurzen, auf Interviews basierenden autobiografischen Texte geben Einblick in die Lebens- und Leidenswege der inzwischen betagten 11 Frauen und 9 Männer, die sehr eindrücklich von dem Erlebten während der NS-Zeit erzählen. Die Überlebensgeschichten von vielen der Interviewten sind bereits publiziert worden. Dennoch ist dieser Sammelband zu empfehlen, da es den Journalisten/Journalistinnen gelungen ist, gut lesbare Texte zusammenzustellen, in denen die Erzählenden mit authentischer Stimme von ihren sehr unterschiedlichen individuellen Leidensgeschichten erzählen. Illustriert werden die Beiträge von ausdrucksstarken Fotos, die während der Interviews entstanden sind. Auszüge der Berichte wurden bereits im "Spiegel" (5/2015) veröffentlicht. (2 S)
