Abstract:
Analyzes the debate and its political implications. Supporters of revisionism argue that the Nazi period should no longer impose a constraint on Germany's self-image and foreign policy. They view the Nazi period as part of a positive anti-Bolshevik continuity and the Final Solution as a reaction to the Bolshevik menace. Hillgruber's work leads to identification with the Nazi regime, but he is not an antisemite. Nolte's views relativize the Holocaust, as part of the modern history of collective fantasies and acts of genocide, supposedly inspired by Toynbee's anti-Jewish philosophy of history. His recent articles simplified these ideas and confirmed the popular demand to end the preoccupation with the past, legitimizing neo-Nazi arguments. Describes the counter-views of Jäckel, Broszat, and Mommsen.
