Abstract:
Discusses the role of Karl Plagge, a major in the Wehrmacht, as a rescuer of several hundred Jews in the region of Vilna during World War II. As commander of the army motor pool, he employed mainly Jewish workers, thus protecting them from immediate execution. He also provided them with medical treatment and food. Although Plagge was careful to hide his activities from his comrades, after the war at least seven of his subordinates revealed that they knew about the aid he was giving to Jews but did not denounce him. Plagge was declared a Righteous of the Nations by Yad Vashem in 2005.
