    Abstract: Much of the most recent research on Jewish scepticism was inspired by the work of the early modern Venetian rabbi Simone Luzzatto, the first thinker in the history of Jewish thought to declare himself a sceptic and a follower of the New Academy. This collected volume shines new light on the intimate relationship between Luzzatto’s sceptical thinking and an era marked by paradoxes and contrasts between religious devotion and scientific rationalism, as well as between the rabbinic-biblical Jewish tradition and the open tendency towards engagement with non-Jewish philosophical, literary, scientific, and theological cultures. It plots out an original path along which to understand Luzzatto’s scepticism by pointing to the various facets of being a Jewish sceptic in seventeenth-century Italy.

    Abstract: This collection of articles is tightly focused on metaphors in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible and their later afterlife in Jewish and Christian texts. The essays deal with a wide range of historical, literary, and methodological issues. First, several contributions employ metaphor theory in analysing the biblical texts, both conceptual frameworks such as blending theory and more traditional methods. Second, metaphors are studied both synchronically, that is, in relation to their current literary contexts, and diachronically, that is, mapping how they have been employed and re-interpreted in different ways and different texts throughout time. Third, other contributions read metaphors in light of theoretical frameworks such as feminist criticism, post-colonial theories, or power discourses that uncover aspects of significance often missed in historical studies. Finally, yet other contributions deal with the issue of how to translate metaphors in contemporary contexts

    Abstract: Anna Langfus a contribué à un renouvellement majeur de la littérature de la Shoah, qui, avant ses publications, était largement dominée par le récit du témoin. Elle est l’auteure de pièces de théâtre et de trois romans : Le Sel et le soufre (1960), Les Bagages de sable (1962), lauréat du prix Goncourt, et Saute, Barbara (1965). Bien qu’ayant vécu les horreurs du génocide, elle n’a pas exprimé sa souffrance par l’autobiographie. Dans son œuvre elle explore, sans pathos, la tragédie des survivants atteints par ce qu’elle appelle « la maladie de la guerre ». Ce livre étudie, entre autres, la spécificité des textes de Langfus. Ecrits à une époque où prévalait l’ethos de la victimisation, de la repentance et parfois du manichéisme, ils nous invitent à tenir à distance toute idéalisation ou fausse consolation. Anna Langfus participated in a major renewal of Holocaust literature which had been mainly testimonial and witness-focused prior to her publications. She is the author of theater plays and of three novels: Le Sel et le soufre (1960), Les Bagages de sable (1962), awarded with the Prix Goncourt, and Saute, Barbara (1965). She experienced the horrors of the Holocaust, but she refused to express her grief through autobiography. Through her work she explores, without pathos , the tragedy of those who survived, and what Anna Langfus herself calls “la maladie de la guerre”: the war disease. This books examines, among other issues, the specificity of Langfus’s texts. Written at a time when an ethos of victimization, repentance, and sometimes Manichaeism was dominant, Langfus’s they urge us to keep any form of idealization or false consolation at a distance

Der kommunistische Kommissar und Partisan Nikolaj Kiselëv wagte im August 1942 den Versuch, über 200 jüdische Menschen aus dem Dorf Dolginovo mehr als 1.500 Kilometer durch von den Deutschen besetztes Gebiet zu führen – nach Osten, hinter die rettende Frontlinie auf sowjetisch kontrolliertes Gebiet. Für dieses riskante Unterfangen wird er heute in Yad Vashem als ein „Gerechter unter den Völkern“ geehrt.     Abstract: "The international conference "Psalms in Rituals from Antiquity to the Present," held on October 24-26, 2018, at the Max-Weber Kolleg in the University of Erfurt, Germany, aimed to showcase and also to build upon recent developments in what has become a very exciting field, bringing to it the distinctive perspective of the Research Centre "Dynamics of Jewish Ritual Practices in Pluralistic Contexts from Antiquity to the Present," which hosted the event. The Research Centre, which was funded from 2015 to 2020 by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF), investigated the dynamic relationship of rituals in pluralistic contexts and specifically in Jewish and Christian religious traditions. While religious institutions often focus on tradition, invariability, and rootedness in history, the Research Centre has found and studied numerous examples of innovation and change in regard to religious ritual practices.     Abstract: Nationalsozialistische Bücherverbrennungen in Deutschland 1933 wurden im nationalsozialistischen Deutschland in konzertierten Aktionen hunderttausende Bücher missliebiger Autor:innen öffentlich verbrannt. Diese Bücherverbrennungen waren mehr als nur eine kulturpolitische Säuberungsaktion, sie waren zentraler Bestandteil im komplexen Gefüge des nationalsozialistischen Machtdurchsetzungsprozesses. Sie in ihrer Gesamtheit zu betrachten, hat sich das Projekt Verbrannte Orte zum Ziel gesetzt und mittlerweile über 160 Bücherverbrennungen dokumentiert: als Fotografien jener Orte, wie sie heute aussehen. Sie zeigen unspektakuläre Plätze der Alltäglichkeit, nur an wenigen weisen Erinnerungszeichen auf das Geschehene hin. Wie aber betrachten wir diese Orte, wenn wir wissen, was dort passiert ist? Eine Auswahl der Fotografien steht im Mittelpunkt des Buches. Ergänzt werden diese durch Texte, welche die Hintergründe der Bücherverbrennungen beleuchten. Einige Biografien betroffener Autor:innen werden vorgestellt und durch einen detaillierten Blick auf das Thema Exil begleitet. Außerdem wird erörtert, was die Bücherverbrennungen von 1933 mit Demokratie und Meinungsfreiheit von heute zu tun haben

    Abstract: Dieses bewegende Buch ist das Ergebnis einer einzigartigen historischen Spurensuche: Inna Gerasimova beschreibt als präzise Chronistin exemplarisch das Schicksal weißrussischer Jüdinnen und Juden während der nationalsozialistischen Besetzung des Landes. Dafür verwendet sie auch zahlreiche Zeitzeugenberichte, die das damalige Geschehen lebendiger nachvollziehbar machen als Überblickswerke und Statistiken es können. Der kommunistische Kommissar und Partisan Nikolaj Kiselëv wagte im August 1942 den Versuch, über 200 jüdische Menschen aus dem Dorf Dolginovo mehr als 1.500 Kilometer durch von den Deutschen besetztes Gebiet zu führen – nach Osten, hinter die rettende Frontlinie auf sowjetisch kontrolliertes Gebiet. Für dieses riskante Unterfangen wird er heute in Yad Vashem als ein „Gerechter unter den Völkern“ geehrt. Was veranlasste Kiselëv zu seinem Entschluss und wie verlief dieser von ihm organsierte „Marsch des Lebens“? Welches Schicksal widerfuhr denen, die sich auf den Weg machten? Wie wurde Kiselëv in der Sowjetunion nach dem Krieg beurteilt und wie sah sein weiteres Leben aus?

    Abstract: Jewish music has become the subject of a respectable literature in different academic disciplines and a touchstone of public and intellectual discourse in such diverse fields as the performing arts and religious studies, the visual arts and philology, cultural studies, and librarianship, and spanning topics that extend to almost all continents. As a forward-looking and multidisciplinary endeavor, The Oxford Handbook of Jewish Music Studies maps this emerging field within the framework of spatiality, temporality, and collectivity as analytical and conceptual categories. It does so by embracing all hemispheres, and interrogating Jewish music’s meaning of various places and spaces across the temporal frame of antiquity through the early twenty-first century. The introductory chapter provides a theoretical foundation that paves the way for the rich selection of case studies brought together in the subsequent sections. These case studies document the different facets of Jewish music and theorize its multivalent correlation with spaces and collectives around the world. The thirty diverse chapters, conceived by an international team of thirty-one outstanding scholars, are divided into eight thematically organized sections, the first of which addresses Jewish music in various lands and territories (some without defined borders in time and space), followed by sections that focus on cities, as well selected spaces therein—ghetto, concert hall, archive, and sacred and ritual spaces. These sections, which largely look at actual and concrete spaces (roughly presented in the order of scale), are followed by the phenomenological spaces of destruction and remembrance, and shekhinah, that is, divine presence.

    Abstract: In this bold and provocative new book, Damani Partridge examines the possibilities and limits for a universalized Black politics. German youth of Turkish, Arab, and African descent use claims of Blackness to hold states and other institutions accountable for racism today. Partridge tracks how these young people take on the expressions of Black Power, acting out the scene from the 1968 Olympics, proclaiming ";I am Malcolm X,"; expressing mutual struggle with Muhammad Ali and Spike Lee, and standing with raised and clenched fists next to Angela Davis. Partridge also documents public school teachers, federal program leaders, and politicians demanding that young immigrants account for the global persistence of anti-Semitism as part of the German state's commitment to anti-genocidal education. He uses these stories to interrogate the relationships between European Enlightenment, Holocaust memory, and Black futures, showing how noncitizens work to reshape their everyday lives.     Abstract: Collaborative engagement between activist academics from Israel and Northern Ireland highlighted the challenges and potential of working through education to promote shared learning and shared life in divided societies. Following these initial explorations, the volume brought together educationalists from Europe, the United States and South Africa to widen the range of experience and insights, and broaden the base of the conversation. The result is this book on the role of shared education, not only in deeply divided societies, but also in places where minorities face discrimination, where migrants face prejudice and barriers, or where society fails to deal positively with cultural diversity. Together, the contributors challenged themselves to develop theoretical and practical paradigms, based on practical knowledge and experience, to promote activist pedagogies. Their shared purpose was to work for more humane, just and democratic societies, in which education offers genuine hope for sustained transformational change. The four main themes around which the book is organized are: educating for democratic-multicultural citizenship, models of shared learning, nurturing intercultural competencies, and reconciling dialogue in the face of conflicting narratives. Die Autor*innen beschäftigen sich u.a. mit der Erinnerungspolitik, Gefühlserbschaften und der Thematisierbarkeit der Shoah in verschiedenen Sozialisierungsprozessen. The National Socialist era still has repercussions on society today. But how is the Shoah addressed in studies and teaching? This book examines the history of the impact of the Shoah in various settings of education and reflects on the theoretical and empirical research to date. Knowledge about and references to the Shoah continue to be transmitted between generations and at the same time are continuously updated in institutional and discursive contexts of contemporary society. This affects educators in several ways: in their own biographies and learning histories and in their subsequent teaching practice. The authors deal, among other things, with the politics of memory, the inheritance of feelings and the possibility of addressing the Shoah in various socialisation processes.

Dieses Buch will die Erinnerung an den Holocaust in der Zusammenarbeit von Überlebenden und Zeichner:innen auf ungewöhnliche Weise bewahren und weitergeben, gerade auch an eine junge Leserschaft, indem es eingespielte Sehgewohnheiten und Bilder vom Holocaust aufbricht. Ausgewiesene Zeithistoriker:innen erklären in knappen, instruktiven Nachworten den Kontext der Geschichten, die aber auch ohne solche Erläuterungen unmittelbar und auf ergreifende Weise ein unfassbares Geschehen lebendig werden lassen.

What is the relation between demons and the hypostatization of abstract concepts (fear, impurity, etc) and baleful phenomenon such as disease? These are some of the questions that this volume addresses by focussing on the nature and characteristics of demons — what one might call ‘demonic ontology’

    Abstract: Dieser Band des Europäischen Instituts für interkulturelle und interreligiöse Forschung ist von der Erfahrung und Einsicht geleitet, dass Antisemitismus in Europa in der Mitte der Gesellschaft weiterhin allgegenwärtig ist. Diese Studie zeigt auf, wie sich das Verhältnis der nichtjüdischen Polen zu ihren jüdischen Nachbarn während des Holocaust wandelte und wie letztere um ihr Überleben kämpften. Durch das Prisma einer Stadt werden die wichtigsten Fragen polnisch-jüdischer Beziehungsgeschichte gestellt, u.a. zur Rolle der nichtjüdischen Polen während des Holocaust und zum Antisemitismus im Polen der Nachkriegszeit.

    Abstract: The Judean community at Elephantine has long fascinated historians of the Persian period. This book, with its stellar assemblage of important scholarly voices, provides substantive new insights and approaches that will advance the study of this well-known but not entirely understood community from fifth-century BCE Egypt. Since Bezalel Porten’s pioneering Archives from Elephantine, published in 1968, the discourse on the subject of the community of Elephantine during the Persian period has changed considerably, due to new data from excavations, the discovery and publication of previously unknown texts, and original scholarly insights and avenues of inquiry. Running the gamut from archaeological to linguistic investigations and encompassing legal, literary, religious, and other aspects of life in this Judean community, this volume stands at a crossroads of research that extends from Hebrew Bible studies to the history of early Jewish communities. It also features fourteen new Aramaic ostraca from Aswan. The volume will appeal to students and scholars of the Hebrew Bible and ancient Judaism, as well as to a wider audience of Egyptologists, Semitists, and specialists in ancient Near Eastern studies. In addition to the editor, the contributors to this volume include Annalisa Azzoni, Bob Becking, Alejandro F. Botta, Lester L. Grabbe, Ingo Kottsieper, Reinhard G. Kratz, André Lemaire, Hélène Nutkowicz, Beatrice von Pilgrim, Cornelius von Pilgrim, Bezalel Porten, Ada Yardeni, and Ran Zadok.     Abstract: Gegen das Vergessen: Der Holocaust aus der Sicht eines Opfers des Nationalsozialismus Was mit der Wannseekonferenz begann, die die Organisation der Deportation und des Massenmords an den europäischen Juden beschloss, durchlitt Filip Müller (1922 - 2013) wie kaum ein anderer. Wer wie er KZ und Zwangsdienst im Sonderkommando Auschwitz-Birkenau mehr als drei Jahre er- und überlebt hat, der gehört zu den wichtigsten Zeugen des Grauens des Holocaust - und ist für sein Leben gezeichnet. 1979/80 veröffentlichte er seinen Zeugen-Bericht »Sonderbehandlung« auf Deutsch. Erschütternd, schonungslos und mit geradezu literarischer Wucht erzählt er von seiner Lagerzeit, beschreibt Täter und Opfer und gibt den Blick frei ins Herz der Finsternis. Ein Buch wie eine Mahnung, den Genozid an den europäischen Juden nie zu vergessen Nur wenige Menschen, die so lange in Auschwitz interniert waren, überlebten Filip Müller trat als einziger Zeuge für die Unmenschlichkeit des Systems der Sonderkommandos in Claude Lanzmanns Film »Shoah« auf Ein schonungsloser Bericht über die Unmenschlichkeit des NS-Regimes Eines der wichtigsten Zeugnisse des Völkermords an den Juden nach über 40 Jahren als kommentierte Neuausgabe Augenzeugenbericht eines Holocaust-Überlebenden, der sprachlos zurücklässt »Sonderbehandlung« von Filip Müller ist die erste authentische Gesamtdarstellung der Geschichte des Sonderkommandos. Wer ihn, als einzigen Zeugen des Sonderkommandos, in Claude Lanzmanns Film Shoah gesehen hat, vergisst sein Gesicht, seine Stimme nicht. Nach der Veröffentlichung 1980 gab es massive Bedrohungen durch Alt- und Neo-Nazis, so dass Müller nie einer deutschen Neuausgabe zustimmt. Erst zum 100. Geburtstag 2022 machte seine Familie eine neue, kommentierte Ausgabe möglich. Die historische Bedeutung des Buchs von Filip Müller kann kaum überschätzt werden!

    Abstract: Dina Porat präsentiert erstmals umfassend die Geschichte von 50 jungen Frauen und Männern, die als Untergrundkämpfer in Osteuropa die Schoa überlebten und nach dem Krieg beschlossen, sechs Millionen Deutsche zu töten. Angeführt von dem bewunderten Dichter und Partisanen Abba Kovner, wollten sie sich an der Nation rächen, die sie für die Ermordung von sechs Millionen Juden verantwortlich machten.     Abstract: "In Émigré Voices Lewkowicz and Grenville present twelve oral history interviews with men and women who came to Britain as Jewish refugees from Germany and Austria in the late 1930s. Many of the interviewees rose to great prominence in their chosen career, such as the author and illustrator Judith Kerr, the actor Andrew Sachs, the photographer and cameraman Wolf Suschitzky, the violinist Norbert Brainin, and the publisher Elly Miller. The narratives of the interviewees tell of their common struggles as child or young adult refugees who had to forge new lives in a foreign country and they illuminate how each interviewee dealt with the challenges of forced emigration and the Holocaust. The voices of the twelve interviewees provide the reader with a unique and original source, which gives direct access to the lived multifaceted experience of the interviewees and their contributions to British culture"--

Die Zusammenhänge zwischen der nationalsozialistischen „Euthanasie“ und dem Holocaust sind noch immer nicht vollständig erforscht. Der Sammelband, zu dem namhafte Forscherinnen und Forscher beigetragen haben, beschäftigt sich mit den Beziehungen zwischen den beiden Mordprogrammen. Er benennt Kontinuitäten, Kausalitäten und parallele Entwicklungen. Dabei geht es um Themen wie Biopolitik, Eugenik und Zwangssterilisation, die Judenverfolgung in der Vorkriegszeit, die Morde im Rahmen der „Aktion T4“, die Krankenmorde in den Konzentrationslagern und im besetzten Polen, die „Aktion Reinhardt“ sowie die justizielle Ahndung der Verbrechen nach 1945. Die Untersuchungen erweitern unser Verständnis von den Verbrechen im Nationalsozialismus insgesamt und speziell zum Verhältnis von „Euthanasie“ und Holocaust.

    Abstract: "In Unveiling the Hidden-Anticipating the Future: Divinatory Practices Among Jews Between Qumran and the Modern Period, Josefina Rodríguez-Arribas and Dorian Gieseler Greenbaum collect ten studies based on primary sources ranging from Qumran to the modern period and covering Europe and the Mediterranean basin. The studies show Jews practising divination (astrology, bibliomancy, physiognomy, dream requests, astral magic, etc.) and implementing the study and practice of the prognostic arts in ways that allowed Jews to make them "Jewish," by avoiding any conflict with Jewish law or halakhah. These studies focus on the Jewish components of this divination, providing specific firsthand details about the practices and their practitioners within their cultural and intellectual contexts-as well as their fears, wishes, and anxieties-using ancient scrolls and medieval manuscripts in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Judaeo-Arabic.     Abstract: Antisemitismus wird in der Schulsozialarbeit und im Studium der Sozialen Arbeit zu wenig thematisiert.     Abstract: In Sirach and Its Contexts an international cohort of experts on the book of Sirach locate this second-century BCE Jewish wisdom text in its various contexts: literary, historical, philosophical, textual, cultural, and political. First compiled by a Jewish sage around 185 BCE, this instruction enjoyed a vibrant ongoing reception history through the middle ages up to the present, resulting in a multiform textual tradition as it has been written, rewritten, transmitted, and studied. Sirach was not composed as a book in the modern sense but rather as an ongoing stream of tradition. Heretofore studied largely in confessional settings as part of the Deuterocanonical literature, this volume brings together essays that take a broadly humanistic approach, in order to understand what an ancient wisdom text can teach us about the pursuit of wisdom and human flourishing

    Abstract: The first comparative, comprehensive history of Nazi mass killing – showing how genocidal policies were crucial to the regime’s strategy to win the war Nazi Germany killed approximately 13 million civilians and other non-combatants in deliberate policies of mass murder, mostly during the war years. Almost half the victims were Jewish, systematically destroyed in the Holocaust, the core of the Nazis’ pan-European racial purification programme. Alex Kay argues that the genocide of European Jewry can be examined in the wider context of Nazi mass killing. For the first time, Empire of Destruction considers Europe’s Jews alongside all the other major victim groups: captive Red Army soldiers, the Soviet urban population, unarmed civilian victims of preventive terror and reprisals, the mentally and physically disabled, the European Roma and the Polish intelligentsia. Kay shows how each of these groups was regarded by the Nazi regime as a potential threat to Germany’s ability to successfully wage a war for hegemony in Europe. Combining the full quantitative scale of the killings with the individual horror, this is a vital and groundbreaking work

Ihr literarischer Umgang mit der Shoah ist bestimmt von der Suche nach der eigenen jüdischen Identität innerhalb einer deutschen Mehrheitsgesellschaft, die in Teilen noch vom alten wie von einem neuen Antisemitismus geprägt ist.

    Abstract: Hilsenraths Shoah-Literatur hat von jeher provoziert – die rezeptionsästhetische Wirkung bezieht ihre Sprengkraft zum großen Teil aus der Einbindung von Sexualität. Erstmals beschäftigt sich nun eine literaturwissenschaftliche Arbeit mit der Funktion der tabubehafteten, bisweilen als pornografisch diskreditierten Verschränkung von Sexualität und Shoah. Zunächst werden Hilsenraths Werke eingebettet in den Kontext einer Shoah-Literatur, welche ebenfalls Sexualität auf sprachlicher und narrativer Ebene nutzt. Zweitens erfolgt eine Betrachtung der Werke unter dezidiert genderorientierter Perspektive. Drittens wird die Korrelation von Sexualität und Shoah analysiert, um die stete Funktionsgebundenheit der Sexualität aufzuzeigen: So dient diese beispielsweise dazu, Macht- und Gewaltverhältnisse zu zementieren oder die Versehrtheit der Figuren herauszustellen. Hilsenrath’s literature of the Shoah has always been provocative – the reception-aesthetic effect can be mostly referred to the involvement of sexuality. For the first time, an academic paper focuses on the function of this tabooed and even pornographic discredited connection between sexuality and Shoah. Firstly, Hilsenrath’s works are situated in the context of the literature of the Shoah which also makes use of sexuality on a linguistic and narrative level. Secondly, the works are being analysed under a decided gender-oriented perspective. Thirdly, the correlation of sexuality and Shoah are being analysed in order to show the consistent function of sexuality. Thus, sexuality serves to foster power and violence or to depict the vulnerability of the protagonists.

    Abstract: Continuing his contribution to medieval Jewish intellectual history, Haym Soloveitchik focuses here on the radical pietist movement of Ḥasidei Ashkenaz and its main literary work, Sefer Ḥasidim, and on the writings and personality of the Provençal commentator Ravad of Posquières. In both areas Soloveitchik challenges mainstream views to provide a new understanding of medieval Jewish thought. Some of the essays are revised and updated versions of work previously published and some are entirely new, but in all of them Soloveitchik challenges reigning views to provide a new understanding of medieval Jewish thought.The section on Sefer Ḥasidim brings together over half a century of Soloveitchik’s writings on German Pietism, many of which originally appeared in obscure publications, and adds two new essays. The first of these is a methodological study of how to read this challenging work and an exposition of what constitutes a valid historical inference, while the second reviews the validity of the sociological and anthropological inferences presented in contemporary historiography. In discussing Ravad’s oeuvre, Soloveitchik questions the widespread notion that Ravad’s chief accomplishment was his commentary on Maimonides’ Mishneh torah; his Talmud commentary, he claims, was of far greater importance and was his true masterpiece. He also adds a new study that focuses on the acrimony between Ravad, as the low-born genius of Posquières, and R. Zerahyah ha-Levi of Lunel, who belonged to the Jewish aristocracy of Languedoc, and considers the implications of that relationship.Continuing his major contribution to medieval Jewish intellectual history, Haym Soloveitchik focuses here on the radical German Pietists and their main literary work Sefer Ḥasidim, and on the writings and personality of the Provençal commentator Ravad of Posquières.
