Abstract:
Surveys the history of the Jews in Germany during the late medieval period. Gives a detailed account of persecutions, expulsions and attempted expulsions from the German centers of Magdeburg, Halle an der Saale and Quedlinburg. Discusses the religious, political, and economic causes for persecution of the Jews. Economically progressive centers were the first to expel them when their financial services were no longer needed. Sometimes Jews were victims of a conflict between the town authorities and the prince, their protector. Accusations of host desecration and blood libels were staged as a pretext for expulsion.
