Abstract:
Traces Nussbaum's early life and work in Germany and Italy, his exile after 1935 in Belgium, internment in 1940 in Saint-Cyprien, his flight and return to occupied Belgium, his continued work while hiding from the Nazis, and his deportation and death in Auschwitz in July 1944. Many reproductions of his paintings accompany the text, which analyzes them as the artist's way of dealing with the depression and dread that beset him from his youth, and all the more in the situation of exile and mortal danger. Increasingly, these paintings point not only to his personal fate but also that of the Jewish people.
