    Abstract: "In his three-volume history, Antony Polonsky provides a comprehensive survey—socio-political, economic, and religious—of the Jewish communities of eastern Europe from 1350 to the present. Until the Second World War, this was the heartland of the Jewish world: nearly three and a half million Jews lived in Poland alone, while nearly three million more lived in the Soviet Union. Although the majority of the Jews of Europe and the United States, and many of the Jews of Israel, originate from these lands, their history there is not well known. Rather, it is the subject of mythologizing and stereotypes that fail both to bring out the specific features of the Jewish civilization which emerged there and to illustrate what was lost. Jewish life, though often poor materially, was marked by a high degree of spiritual and ideological intensity and creativity. Antony Polonsky recreates this lost world—brutally cut down by the Holocaust and less brutally but still seriously damaged by the Soviet attempt to destroy Jewish culture. Wherever possible, the unfolding of history is illustrated by contemporary Jewish writings to show how Jews felt and reacted to the complex and difficult situations in which they found themselves." --

    Abstract: Der Rechtsanwalt Achim Doerfer, geb. 1965 (zuletzt: "Die grosse Abzocke", ID-A 2/17), Sohn und Enkel von Holocaust-Überlebenden, Mitglied des Vorstands der Jüdischen Gemeinde Göttingen, bringt in diesem Buch sein Unbehagen mit der Erinnerungskultur an den Holocaust in Deutschland zum Ausdruck. Der erste Teil seines Buchs ist dem Thema jüdischer Widerstand in der NS-Zeit und jüdische Rache in der Nachkriegszeit gewidmet, im 2. Teil setzt er sich mit der politischen und juristischen Aufarbeitung des Holocaust auseinander und im 3. Teil mit dem "Märchen deutsch-jüdischer Versöhnung". Er beklagt, dass nach wie vor Jüdinnen und Juden vor allem als Opfer gesehen werden und es keine Anerkennung jüdischen Widerstands gibt. Er kritisiert die mangelnde Strafverfolgung von NS-Tätern. Kritisch sieht er auch, dass Erinnerungsarbeit vor allem von einem christlich geprägten Verständnis von Versöhnung geprägt ist. - Eine Streitschrift, die zur Auseinandersetzung mit der heutigen Erinnerungskultur an den Holocaust anregt.     Abstract: Unnachahmlich treffsicher nimmt der Historiker Götz Aly den keineswegs immer "vorbildlichen" Umgang der Deutschen mit ihrer nationalsozialistischen Vergangenheit in den Blick: Oft ist von "den Tätern" die Rede, wenn es um die NS-Verbrechen geht, von "der SS" oder "den Nationalsozialisten". Doch es waren Hunderttausende Deutsche, die aktiv Menschheitsverbrechen ungeheuren Ausmaßes begingen, und viele Millionen, die diese billigten, zumindest aber geschehen ließen. Götz Aly setzte sich in seinen Reden der vergangenen Jahre, von denen die wichtigsten in diesem Band versammelt sind, immer wieder mit den vielfältigen Praktiken auseinander, die Schuld auf möglichst kleine Gruppen und Unpersonen abzuschieben. Doch auch wenn sich mancher dagegen sperrt, so zeigt Götz Aly, es bleibt "Unser Nationalsozialismus". Seine Maxime lautet: Die Vergangenheit nicht "bewältigen", sondern vergegenwärtigen. So lässt sich daraus lernen.

    Abstract: The first work to systematically investigate the potential for a dialogue between postcolonial studies and the history of Zionism. There is an "unacknowledged kinship" between studies of Zionism and post-colonial studies, a kinship that deserves to be both discovered and acknowledged. Unacknowledged Kinships strives to facilitate a conversation between the historiography of Zionism and postcolonial studies by identifying and exploring possible linkages and affiliations between their subjects as well as the limits of such connections. The contributors to this volume discuss central theoretical concepts developed within the field of postcolonial studies, and they use these concepts to analyze crucial aspects of the history of Zionism while contextualizing Zionist thought, politics, and culture within colonial and postcolonial histories. This book also argues that postcolonial studies could gain from looking at the history of Zionism as an example of not only colonial domination but also the seemingly contradictory processes of national liberation and self-empowerment. Unacknowledged Kinships is the first work to systematically investigate the potential for a dialogue between postcolonial studies and Zionist historiography. It is also unique in suggesting that postcolonial concepts can be applied to the history of European Zionism just as comprehensively as to the history of Zionism in Palestine and Israel or Arab countries. The National Socialist era still has repercussions on society today. But how is the Shoah addressed in studies and teaching? This book examines the history of the impact of the Shoah in various settings of education and reflects on the theoretical and empirical research to date. Knowledge about and references to the Shoah continue to be transmitted between generations and at the same time are continuously updated in institutional and discursive contexts of contemporary society. This affects educators in several ways: in their own biographies and learning histories and in their subsequent teaching practice. The authors deal, among other things, with the politics of memory, the inheritance of feelings and the possibility of addressing the Shoah in various socialisation processes.

    Abstract: In der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und in der DDR setzten sich Künstler*innen in vielfältigen Ausdrucksformen und Stilen mit der nationalsozialistischen Vergangenheit auseinander.     Abstract: "Kinder achten, wertschätzen und partizipieren lassen" - Janusz Korczak gilt als einer der wichtigsten Pädagogen des 20. Jahrhunderts und trägt bis heute den Beinamen "Vater der Kinderrechte". In seiner Pädagogik der Achtung stehen die kindliche Sichtweise und die respektvolle Begegnung mit dem Kind stets im Mittelpunkt. Korczak arbeitete als Kinderarzt und Schriftsteller von Kinderbüchern und pädagogischen Schriften und übernahm 1912 die Leitung eines jüdischen Waisenhauses. Gemeinsam mit den ihm anvertrauten 200 Waisenkindern wurde er in das Konzentrationslager Treblinka deportiert und ermordet. Bis heute prägt seine pädagogische Arbeit nicht nur den Autor dieses Buches, sondern zu großen Teilen auch die Arbeit in der frühkindlichen Bildung. Zu Korczaks 80. Todestag und vor dem Hintergrund der vielzähligen Herausforderungen, vor denen nicht nur die pädagogischen Fachkräfte, sondern auch die Kinder aktuell stehen, beleuchtet der Autor in seinem Buch 'Janusz Korczak: Die Aktualität seiner Pädagogik', inwieweit Korczaks Pädagogik noch heute auf die Arbeit in Kindertageseinrichtungen angewendet werden kann.

    Abstract: "In 1935, Adolf Hitler declared Munich the "Capital of the Movement." It was here that he developed his anti-Semitic beliefs and founded the Nazi party. Though Hitler's immediate milieu during the 1910s and 1920s has received ample attention, this book argues that the Munich of this period is worthy of study in its own right and that the changes the city underwent between 1918 and 1923 are absolutely crucial for understanding the rise of antisemitism and eventually Nazism in Germany. Before 1918, Munich had a decidedly cosmopolitan flavor, but its open atmosphere was shattered by the November Revolution of 1918-19. Jews were prominently represented among many of the European revolutions of the late 1910s and early 1920s, but nowhere did Jewish revolutionaries and government representatives appear in such high numbers as in Munich. The link between Jews and communist revolutionaries was especially strong in the minds of the city's residents. In the aftermath of the revolution and the short-lived Socialist regime that followed, the Jews of Munich experienced a massive backlash. The book unearths the story of Munich as ground zero for the racist and reactionary German Right, revealing how this came about and what it meant for those who lived through it"--

    Abstract: "Colonialism and the Jews in German History brings together new and path-breaking studies on the historical relationship between colonialism and the Jews in Germany. The book considers the mutual influences on the situation of the Jews in Germany, including attitudes towards Jews and anti-Semitism but also Jewish self-conceptions, and the ideology and politics of German colonialism. The contributors discuss the ways in which colonial ideology and practice have affected the position of the Jews in Germany, and the relationship between anti-Semitism and colonial racism. In doing so, the volume introduces German colonialism as a relevant context for German-Jewish history, and it expands the perspective on German colonial history significantly by considering Jews both as distinct objects and also as agents within the field of German colonialism. Diese kosmopolitische Bevölkerung bestimmte das Gesicht von Lodz als einer „Stadt der vier Kulturen“. Das Buch zeigt aber auch, wie die Einwohnerschaft in den 1930er Jahren in nationale Gruppen aufgespalten wurde und wie sie während des 2. Weltkriegs als deutsch besetztes „Litzmannstadt“ von innen zerstört wurde. Vertreibung und Diskriminierung nach 1945 zerstörten multikulturelle Restbestände. Im kommunistischen Polen besaß die Textilindustrie keine Lobby und ging auch in Lodz in den 1990er Jahren unter.

    Abstract: Zwischen 1933-1941 verließ knapp die Hälfte der aufgrund ihrer jüdischen Wurzeln verfolgten Münchner Bürger ihre Heimatstadt, um sich im Ausland ein neues Leben aufzubauen. Was bewegte die Münchner Juden dazu, den Schritt in die Emigration zu wagen? Unter der offensichtlichen Antwort der Erfahrung nationalsozialistischer Verfolgung verborgen lag ein vielschichtiges Netz aus Beweggründen. Anhand von Statistiken zur jüdischen Emigration aus München sowie durch detaillierte Einblicke in die Schicksale von vier Münchner jüdischen Familien stellt dieses Buch dar, wie unterschiedlich Entscheidungsprozesse für oder gegen die Auswanderung waren und wie stark die erfolgreiche Durchführung einer Emigration von einer Vielzahl externer Faktoren abhing.     Abstract: Jews and Armenians are often perceived as peoples with similar tragic historical experiences. Not only were both groups forced into statelessness and a life outside their homelands for centuries, in the 20th century, in the shadow of war, they were threatened with collective annihilation. Thus far, academic approaches to these two "classical" diasporas have been quite different. Moreover, Armenian and Jewish questions posed during the 19th and 20th centuries have usually been treated separately. The conference “We Will Live After Babylon” that took place in Hanover in February 2019, addressed this gap in research and was one of the first initiatives to deal directly with Jewish and Armenian historical experiences, between expulsion, exile and annihilation, in a comparative framework. The contributions in this volume take on multidisciplinary approaches relating to the conference’s central themes: diaspora, minority issues and genocide

Mit der 1999 etablierten Gedenkstättenkonzeption ist der Bund an der Aufarbeitung der NS-Vergangenheit und auch des DDR-Kommunismus beteiligt.Unverkennbar ist jedoch der Trend, Geschichte und Geschichtsbewusstsein auf Erinnerung zu reduzieren und diese für den Königsweg von Demokratie- und Menschenrechtserziehung zu halten.Im Gegensatz dazu wird in diesem Band davon ausgegangen, dass weder das individuelle noch das historische Erinnern als solche automatisch identisch sind mit (selbst-)kritischem Lernen aus unannehmbarer Geschichte (Imre Kertész). Zur Debatte stehen neue Herausforderungen. Wie lässt sich Einsicht in die fortbestehende Relevanz der Auseinandersetzung ohne Zeigefinger und jenseits vordergründiger Analogien bewahren und begründen? Wie wirken sich Medialisierung und Kommerzialisierung aus? Was kann und soll die Auseinandersetzung mit im Kern deutscher Geschichte in der Migrationsgesellschaft leisten?

    Abstract: "The Medieval Postcolonial Jew, In and Out of Time studies violent temporal clashes that are written into the medieval vision of annus domini [the year of our Lord]. Christian temporality represents Jewish time as queerly oddly outmoded and advocating uncivil and socially disruptive behavior. Jewish temporality, in turn, records a marginalized people who work to rescue their embattled temporality from becoming a time forgotten and colonized. Through a select group of literature in Middle English, Latin, and Hebrew, as well as sixteen manuscript pictorials, author Miriamne Ara Krummel confronts the notion that annus domini time (whether disguised as CE or AD) figures as the universal standard. Krummel's argument details how Other temporalities-ones outside and not like annus domini time-are cast as nonstandard and imagined as wholly devised out of stories that promote fear and terror, and are positioned as putative threats to the fabric of the temporal empire of Latin Christendom. Ultimately, the book reflects on the ways in which "common" time both marks and silences marginal identities and cultures and shows to what extent the dynamics of the medieval environment materialize in our modern world"--

Jonathan Kaplan untersucht verschiedene Aspekte der „NS-Vergangenheitsbewältigung“ im MfAA: die Integration von DDR-Diplomaten mit politischen Erfahrungen aus dem „Dritten Reich“ und von Diplomaten mit jüdischer Herkunft, und die propagandistischen Maßnahmen der DDR gegen Nazi- und Kriegsverbrecher in der Bundesrepublik.

    Abstract: In April-May 1940 the German Wehrmacht invaded Northern and Western Europe. The subsequent occupation of Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France brought the Jewish population of these countries – both established residents and refugees – under German control. From autumn 1941 in Luxembourg and from spring/summer 1942 in Belgium, the Netherlands and occupied France, Jews were required to wear the ‘Jewish star’ and many were subjected to forced labour. By mid-1942, deportations from Luxembourg and France to the ghettos and extermination camps in occupied Eastern Europe had already begun, while in the other occupied countries they were imminent. In April 1942 Alfred Oppenheimer, the Jewish elder in Luxembourg, wrote: ‘A dreadful fate hangs over our community again. The worst that can happen has now happened and the Poland transport is a certainty.’ This volume covers Norway and Western Europe during the period from the German invasion to mid 1942 (developments in Denmark for this period are documented in vol. 12) and records how Jews in these parts of Europe were excluded from society and stripped of their rights, livelihoods, and property. Letters and diary entries by the persecuted Jews detail life under German occupation and the attempts by many Jews to emigrate. The sources show how Jewish organizations sought to alleviate the impact of persecution, and how the German occupiers and local collaborators targeted Jews with increasingly stringent measures and clamped down on any form of resistance

Er benennt Kontinuitäten, Kausalitäten und parallele Entwicklungen. Dabei geht es um Themen wie Biopolitik, Eugenik und Zwangssterilisation, die Judenverfolgung in der Vorkriegszeit, die Morde im Rahmen der „Aktion T4“, die Krankenmorde in den Konzentrationslagern und im besetzten Polen, die „Aktion Reinhardt“ sowie die justizielle Ahndung der Verbrechen nach 1945. Die Untersuchungen erweitern unser Verständnis von den Verbrechen im Nationalsozialismus insgesamt und speziell zum Verhältnis von „Euthanasie“ und Holocaust.

    Abstract: Linguistic and semantic features in names—and surnames in particular—reveal evidence of historical phenomena, such as migrations, occupational structure, and acculturation. In this book, Alexander Avram assembles and analyzes a corpus of more than 28,000 surnames, including phonetic and graphic variants, used by Jews in Romanian-speaking lands from the sixteenth century until 1944, the end of World War II in Romania.Mining published and unpublished sources, including Holocaust-period material in the Yad Vashem Archives and the Pages of Testimony collection, Avram makes the case that through a careful analysis of the surnames used by Jews in the Old Kingdom of Romania, we can better understand and corroborate different sociohistorical trends and even help resolve disputed historical and historiographical issues. Using onomastic methodology to substantiate and complement historical research, Avram examines the historical development of these surnames, their geographic patterns, and the ways in which they reflect Romanian Jews’ interactions with their surroundings. The resulting surnames dictionary brings to light a lesser-known chapter of Jewish onomastics. It documents and preserves local naming patterns and specific surnames, many of which disappeared in the Holocaust along with their bearers.Historical Implications of Jewish Surnames in the Old Kingdom of Romania is the third volume in a series that includes Pleasant Are Their Names: Jewish Names in the Sephardi Diaspora and The Names of Yemenite Jewry: A Social and Cultural History, both of which are available from Penn State University Press.     Abstract: Mehr als 450 Musiker und Musikerinnen waren unter den etwa 18.000 überwiegend jüdischen Flüchtlingen aus Deutschland und Österreich, die ab 1938 vor der NS-Verfolgung in die chinesische Hafenstadt Shanghai flohen. Für die meisten war die Stadt kein Wunschziel, die zunächst teilweise, später ganz von den Japanern besetzt war. Kriegsbedingt gab es dort aber gerade keine Einreiseformalitäten. Für die Zeit bis zur Machtübernahme der Kommunisten 1949 war das Shanghaier Exil in politischer, kultureller und sozioökonomischer Hinsicht ein Ausnahmefall. In der 3,5 Millionen-Stadt lebten überwiegend Chinesen, daneben existierten aber exterritoriale Niederlassungen von Franzosen, Briten und US-Amerikanern. Außerdem gab es zahlreiche weitere Ausländergruppen, darunter russische Revolutionsflüchtlinge, Auslandsdeutsche und die Mitglieder bagdadisch-sephardischer und russisch-aschkenasischer jüdischer Gemeinden. Die Flüchtlinge hatten dabei zeitweilig mit einer verordneten Ghettoisierung, Kriegseinwirkungen, Inflation und Mangelversorgung zu kämpfen.

    Abstract: This book is a unique compilation of essays about the genocidal persecution fuelling the Nazi regime in World War II. Written by world-renowned experts in the field, it confronts a vitally important and exceedingly difficult topic with sensitivity, courage, and wisdom, furthering our understanding of the Holocaust/Shoah psychoanalytically, historically, and through the arts. Authors from four continents offer their perspectives, clinical experiences, findings, and personal narratives on such subjects as resilience, remembrance, giving testimony, aging, and mourning. There is an emphasis on the intergenerational transmission of trauma of both the victims and the perpetrators, with chapters looking at the question of "evil", comparative studies, prevention, and the misuse of the Holocaust. Those chapters relating to therapy address the specific issues of the survivors, including the second and third generation, through psychoanalysis as well as other modalities, whilst the section on creativity and the arts looks at film, theater, poetry, opera, and writing. The aftermath of the Holocaust demanded that psychoanalysis re-examine the importance of psychic trauma; those who first studied this darkest chapter in human history successfully challenged the long-held assumption that psychical reality was essentially the only reality to be considered. As a result, contemporary thought about trauma, dissociation, self psychology, and relational psychology were greatly influenced by these pioneers, whose ideas have evolved since then. This long-awaited text is the definitive update and elaboration of their original contributions.

    Abstract: "What paths did true believers take to Nazism? Why did they join what was initially a small, extremist, and often violent movement on the fringes of German politics? When the party began its election campaigning after 1925, why did people vote for it only grudgingly, though in the Great Depression years, make it the largest in the country? Even then, many millions withheld their support, as they would, if covertly, in the Third Reich. Were the recruits simply converted by hearing a spell-binding Hitler speech? Or did they find their own way to National Socialism? How was this all-embracing theory applied in the Third Reich after 1933 and into the catastrophic war years? To what extent did people internalize or consume the doctrine of National Socialism, or reject it? In the first half of the book I examine how ordinary people became Nazis, or at least supported the party and voted for it in elections down to 1933. We need to remember, that Hitler squeaked into power with the help of those in positions of power who wanted to get rid of democracy, "forever." Into the Third Reich I trace how the regime applied its teachings to major domestic and foreign political events, racial persecution, and cultural developments, including in art and architecture, and how people reacted or behaved in that context. This story begins with a focus on Hitler. Like millions of others after Germany's lost war, he was psychologically adrift, searching for answers, and some kind of political salvation. How did he find the tiny fringe group, the German Workers' Party (DAP), that he and a few others transformed in 1920 into the imposing-sounding National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP), or Nazi Party? Insofar as Hitler had fixed ideas at the end of the Great War in 1918, high on the list was nationalism, in spite of the aspersions cast against it by mutinous sailors and rebellious soldiers tired of the fighting. Some aspects of what became his doctrine or ideology, stemmed from the cluster of ideas, resentments, and passions widely shared in Germany at that time. His views and those of his comrades also reflected the fact that Germany was already a nation with a great deal of egalitarianism baked into its political culture. Almost without exception, the Nazis emphasized all kinds of socialist attitudes, to be sure a socialism "cleansed" of international Marxism and communism.     Abstract: The Western Wall—Judaism’s holiest site—occupies a prominent position in contemporary Jewish and Israeli discourse, current events, and local politics. In The Western Wall: The Dispute over Israel's Holiest Jewish Site, 1967–2000 , Kobi Cohen-Hattab and Doron Bar offer a detailed exploration of the Western Wall plaza’s evolution in the late twentieth century. The examination covers the role of archaeology in defining the space, the Western Wall’s transformation as an Israeli and Jewish symbol, and the movement to open it to a variety of Jewish denominations.     Abstract: Die Verfolgung der jüdischen Bürger während der nationalsozialistischen Herrschaft ging einher mit dem Raub ihres Eigentums, der von alltäglichen Haushaltsgegenständen über Kunstwerke, Geld- und Anlagevermögen sowie Immobilien bis hin zu ihren Firmen reichte. Am Raub und der Bereicherung waren neben den Funktionären der NSDAP zahlreiche weitere Personengruppen und Institutionen beteiligt, darunter staatliche und kommunale Behörden, vor allem die Finanzverwaltung und Museen, Kunsthistoriker, Kunsthändler, Firmeninhaber und Angestellte sowie Arbeitskollegen und Nachbarn. Die Restitution des Eigentums der Verfolgten nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs war für die Berechtigten schmerzvoll, das Ergebnis selten befriedigend. Oft mussten sie die Verfolgung erneut durchleben. Häufig waren ihre Verhandlungspartner die Täter, die ihre eigene Rolle im Raubgeschehen verharmlosten, im Extremfall sogar Beweismaterial zurückhielten oder die Berechtigten schlichtweg anlogen. An Beispielen überwiegend aus Schwaben, darunter aus Augsburg und Memmingen, werden in diesem Band solche Raubszenarien und die Restitution vorgestellt. Akteure werden benannt, Abläufe rekonstruiert, darüber hinaus wird die Quellenlage für die Raub- und Restitutionsforschung in Bayerisch-Schwaben vorgestellt.
