Abstract:
Pp. 285-293 discuss antisemitic graphic portrayals of Jews from the Middle Ages through the 1920s. Pp. 293-301 deal with depictions of Jews in the Yiddish press in the early 20th century, and how some of the images were similar to the antisemitic ones. Concludes that although the cartoonists of the Yiddish press engaged a Jewish physiognomy, they did so on their own terms. They removed the cartoon Jew from his marginal status of the Other and made him the locus of cultural representation.
