Abstract:
Examines the attitudes and actions of the Archbishop of Lvov, and head of the Ukrainian Uniate Church in Galicia, regarding the Jews during the Holocaust against the background of the complex relations between Ukrainians and Jews. Suspicions of a Jewish-Bolshevik alliance, traditional Ukrainian antisemitism, and the influx of Jewish refugees in 1939 led to mass pogroms by Ukrainians and to their collaboration with Nazis. Discusses Sheptyts'kyi's aid to Jews before the Nazi invasion in 1941, and his delayed reaction to the mass murders which began in early 1942. His reactions consisted of a letter sent to the Vatican condemning the Nazi regime, pastoral letters, and his own rescue of individual Jews. Concludes that, compared with the actions of the Ukrainian population, the Ukrainian Church and the Vatican, Sheptyts'kyi's deeds were humane and courageous.
