Abstract:
Discusses the establishment of ghettos in Italy, mostly in the Papal States, during the Counter-Reformation movement, beginning in 1555. Describes the process of segregation of the Jewish population and changes in their professions and legal status. States that in the same period, Italy saw an influx of Sephardim, and especially Portuguese Conversos, who entered these ghettos.
