Abstract:
The Gospel of Matthew has been seen as contributing greatly to Christian antisemitism with its description of Jesus' denunciation of the Scribes and Pharisees as "serpents", "a brood of vipers", and "corrupt murderers". Contends that Matthew did not write this as a Christian attacking Jews. Rather, writing in 80-95 CE, in the aftermath of the destruction of the Temple by the Romans in 70 CE, Matthew wrote as a Jewish leader of one of several competing Jewish factions. His attacks on Scribes and Pharisees were aimed at the leaders of rival Jewish factions, not against Jews in general whom he actually wanted to attract to his Jesus movement.
