Abstract:
Deals with the anti-Jewish persecution of 1938-45 in Italy, as recalled in memoirs of victims published after the war. States that the memoirs show that the Jews in Italy did not understand the progression of events leading to the enactment of the Racial Laws and to persecution. Asserts that the reason was the high degree of integration of Jews into Italian society, the identification of some of them with the fascist regime, and the confusing signals given to the public by the fascist government. Considers that the scarce understanding of the immediate context, the subjective organization of past events in their minds, and the tendency to avoid relating humiliating facts made the re-creation of life experiences in the form of memoirs difficult.
