Abstract:
Surveys the origins and development of the Austrian National Socialist Party, led by Walter Riehl after World War I. During the 1920s, it was a small party beset by constant quarrels and interpersonal conflicts. In 1926 the party became a branch of the German NSDAP and was controlled from Munich. In the 1930s there was a sudden change in the fortunes of the party which grew stronger and stronger. Discusses reasons for the Nazis' success in Austria, which were mainly economic, but the long-standing tradition of antisemitism in Austria played a role as well.
