Abstract:
Discusses Salah Abd al-Fattah Khalidi's very popular book "Haqa'iq Qur'aniyya hawla al-qadiyya al-Filastiniyya" ("Qur'anic Facts regarding the Palestinian Issue"), first published in 1991 by the Hamas Publishing House, as a modern anti-Jewish polemic that forecloses all debate with Jews. Qur'anic verses are interpreted radically, and quite differently from classical commentators, to claim that the Qur'an predicts the total annihilation of the Jewish state by Muslim warriors via "jihad". Al-Khalidi manipulates the Qur'an to deny any Jewish claim to the territory of Palestine and, thus, to deny the legitimacy of the Jewish state. Negotiating with Jews is unacceptable, as is making peace with them. Stresses that Al-Khalidi's contemporary interpretation reflects the new socio-political reality of Jewish sovereignty over Muslim and Palestinian soil. This is seen as the Jews' second evil deed, after their non-acceptance of Muhammad. Another traditional element of Islam is the argument that the Jews unsuccessfully forged the Bible. Al-Khalidi aims at increasing Islamic hostility toward Israel and the Jews. He promises, on what he presents as Qur'anic authority, that Palestine will be restored to the Muslims.
