Abstract:
A lecture given at a celebration of the Evangelisch-Lutherische Gesamtkirchengemeinde, Munich, October 1988. Discusses the reactions of the Protestant Churches to Nazi persecution of the Jews and the implications for Germans today. Cites examples of Protestant ministers who courageously protested against this persecution. However, the churches in general remained silent, not only because of Nazi terror and to protect themselves, but also because they were blinded by traditional Christian anti-Judaism to their moral responsibility for Jews as human beings. Many also shared the Nazi ideology that made Jews responsible for all the evils of modernization, liberalism, and pluralism.
