Abstract:
Disagrees with the view put forward by Rosemary Ruether in "Faith and Fratricide" (1974) that anti-Judaism pervaded the Synoptic Gospels and the first century Church. Contends that Ruether failed to distinguish between the various authors of the Gospels and Acts. Argues that Luke and Acts are not anti-Jewish and describe a division among Jews, between supporters and opponents of Jesus and Christianity, rather than opposing "the Jews" to the followers of Christ. Nor do they attack Jewish Law. However, Mark attacks the latter and Matthew insists that divine election has passed from the Jews to the Church: the Church Fathers combined both views. Questions Ruether's picture of the early Church, described in Acts as predominantly Gentile and anti-Jewish, and suggests that the unacceptable statements in Mark and Matthew be regarded as lacking apostolic authority.
