Abstract:
A paper delivered at the conference "The Church, Jews and Judaism", Warsaw, June 1989. Describes the controversy over the Carmelite convent in Auschwitz and explains to Poles why the presence of Carmelites near the Auschwitz camp is not acceptable to most Jews. Explains the Jewish understanding of prayer, of the cross, of the place where the Holocaust occurred, as opposed to the Christian understanding, and the just fear of the Jews that Auschwitz can lose its character as a symbol of Jewish martyrdom. Concludes that the controversy ended in the decision to construct a Center of Information, Education, Meetings and Prayer outside the camp, a plan to which both parties agreed.
