Abstract:
Discusses the enormous taxes levied from the Jews by King Henry III. In 1239 the Royal Council demanded that the Jews pay a third part of all their chattels and bonds to the king's coffers. Emphasizes the punitive nature of this demand, and states that its immediate provocation remains a mystery. Disappointment from the receipts of the Third engendered the 20,000 mark tallage imposed upon the Jewish community in 1241-42. A recently discovered document shows that the latter was paid in full and on time. Pp. 210-249 contain lists of receipts from the Third and from the 20,000 mark tallage according to location, with names, amounts, and dates of payment.
