    Abstract: "In his three-volume history, Antony Polonsky provides a comprehensive survey—socio-political, economic, and religious—of the Jewish communities of eastern Europe from 1350 to the present. Until the Second World War, this was the heartland of the Jewish world: nearly three and a half million Jews lived in Poland alone, while nearly three million more lived in the Soviet Union. Although the majority of the Jews of Europe and the United States, and many of the Jews of Israel, originate from these lands, their history there is not well known. Rather, it is the subject of mythologizing and stereotypes that fail both to bring out the specific features of the Jewish civilization which emerged there and to illustrate what was lost. Jewish life, though often poor materially, was marked by a high degree of spiritual and ideological intensity and creativity. Antony Polonsky recreates this lost world—brutally cut down by the Holocaust and less brutally but still seriously damaged by the Soviet attempt to destroy Jewish culture. Wherever possible, the unfolding of history is illustrated by contemporary Jewish writings to show how Jews felt and reacted to the complex and difficult situations in which they found themselves." --

    Abstract: This collection of articles is tightly focused on metaphors in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible and their later afterlife in Jewish and Christian texts. The essays deal with a wide range of historical, literary, and methodological issues. First, several contributions employ metaphor theory in analysing the biblical texts, both conceptual frameworks such as blending theory and more traditional methods. Second, metaphors are studied both synchronically, that is, in relation to their current literary contexts, and diachronically, that is, mapping how they have been employed and re-interpreted in different ways and different texts throughout time. Third, other contributions read metaphors in light of theoretical frameworks such as feminist criticism, post-colonial theories, or power discourses that uncover aspects of significance often missed in historical studies. Finally, yet other contributions deal with the issue of how to translate metaphors in contemporary contexts

    Abstract: Georges Perecs Werk sind zwei Erbschaften eingeschrieben: das familiäre Vermächtnis jüdischer Geschichte sowie das intellektuelle Testament des Marxismus. Das erste haben bereits viele gelesen, das zweite wurde bisher kaum beachtet. Die Studie „Schreibformen. Georges Perecs literarischer Materialismus“ schließt diese Forschungslücke. Sie skizziert die marxistische Genealogie in Perecs Texten und zeigt, dass seine oulipotische Praxis nicht zu bloßen Sprachspielereien führt. Das Schreiben unter formalen Einschränkungen ist vielmehr als eine Auseinandersetzung mit gesellschaftlichen Zwängen zu begreifen, unter denen auch die künstlerische Arbeit steht.     Abstract: The Hellenistic period was a pivotal moment in the history of the Jewish priesthood. The waning days of the Persian empire coincided with the continued ascendance of the high priest and Jerusalem temple as powerful political, cultural, and religious institutions in Judea. The Aramaic Scrolls from Qumran, only recently published in full, testify to the existence of a flourishing but previously unknown Jewish literary tradition dating from the end of Persian rule to the rise of the Hasmoneans. Throughout this book, Robert Jones analyzes how Israel’s priestly institutions are represented in these writings, and he demonstrates that they are essential for understanding the Jewish priesthood at this crucial stage in its history

    Abstract: Im Dezember 321 teilte der römische Kaiser Konstantin den Kölner Ratsherren mit, dass es fortan gesetzlich möglich sei, auch jüdische Bürger in den Rat zu berufen. Sein Brief gilt als die älteste schriftliche Quelle, die jüdisches Leben auf dem Gebiet des heutigen Deutschlands belegt. Er ist somit die Grundlage dafür, dass 2021 das Festjahr „1700 Jahre jüdisches Leben in Deutschland“ begangen wurde. In den 24 Beiträgen dieses Buches, die zum überwiegenden Teil auf einen Call for Papers für „Aus Politik und Zeitgeschichte“ zurückgehen, spiegelt sich ein kleines Stück der Vielfalt des jüdischen Lebens in Deutschland wider – von den frühen Anfängen bis in die Gegenwart.     Abstract: Am 17. Februar 2019 wäre Walter Grab 100 Jahre alt geworden. Sein persönlicher Werdegang spiegelt die Herausforderungen und politischen Verwerfungen des 20. Jahrhunderts wider. Als Historiker hat er wichtige Beiträge zur Demokratiegeschichte und ihrer Verbindung zur Emanzipation der Juden geleistet. Insbesondere die Französische Revolution und ihre Wirkungsgeschichte haben ihn lebenslang beschäftigt. Dabei stand auch die Frage im Mittelpunkt, weshalb die Ideen der Revolution in Deutschland nicht den gleichen Erfolg hatten wie etwa in Frankreich oder England. Diese Forschungen verknüpfte er mit einem anderen großen Thema, zu dem er ebenfalls bedeutende Beiträge geleistet hat: Dem Verhältnis zwischen der Demokratiebewegung und der Emanzipation der Juden in Europa.     Abstract: On February 17, 2019, Walter Grab would have turned 100. His personal career reflects the challenges and political upheavals of the 20th century. As a historian, he made important contributions to the history of democracy and its connection to the emancipation of the Jews. In particular, the French Revolution and its history of impact have occupied him throughout his life. He also focused on the question of why the ideas of the Revolution did not have the same success in Germany as they did, for example, in France or England. He linked this research to another major topic to which he also made significant contributions: The relationship between the democracy movement and the emancipation of Jews in Europe. In the context of an interdisciplinary colloquium at the Europa Kolleg Hamburg and the Institute for the History of German Jews in Hamburg, his work was honored and linked to the question of the future of democracy in Europe. This volume presents the results to a broader public. With a greeting by the Senator for Culture Dr. Carsten Brosda. With contributons by Carsten Brosda, Uwe Friesel, Alexander Grab, Andreas Grimmel, Arno Herzig, Yael Kupferberg and Rainer Nicolaysen.

Ausgewiesene Zeithistoriker:innen erklären in knappen, instruktiven Nachworten den Kontext der Geschichten, die aber auch ohne solche Erläuterungen unmittelbar und auf ergreifende Weise ein unfassbares Geschehen lebendig werden lassen.

    Abstract: A History of Anti-Semitism examines the history, culture and literature of antisemitism from antiquity to the present. With contributions from an international team of scholars, whose essays were specially commissioned for this volume, it covers the long history of antisemitism starting with ancient Greece and Egypt, through the anti-Judaism of early Christianity, and the medieval era in both the Christian and Muslim worlds when Jews were defined as 'outsiders,' especially in Christian Europe. This portrayal often led to violence, notably pogroms that often accompanied Crusades, as well as to libels against Jews. The volume also explores the roles of Luther and the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the debate over Jewish emancipation, Marxism, and the social disruptions after World War 1 that led to the rise of Nazism and genocide. Finally, it considers current issues, including the dissemination of hate on social media and the internet and questions of definition and method.

Almost half the victims were Jewish, systematically destroyed in the Holocaust, the core of the Nazis’ pan-European racial purification programme. Alex Kay argues that the genocide of European Jewry can be examined in the wider context of Nazi mass killing. For the first time, Empire of Destruction considers Europe’s Jews alongside all the other major victim groups: captive Red Army soldiers, the Soviet urban population, unarmed civilian victims of preventive terror and reprisals, the mentally and physically disabled, the European Roma and the Polish intelligentsia. Kay shows how each of these groups was regarded by the Nazi regime as a potential threat to Germany’s ability to successfully wage a war for hegemony in Europe.     Abstract: The MAZEWA project is presented here as an example of the work of the Netzwerkstatt of Hillersche Villa in Zittau which aims to further develop the remembrance and commemoration work around the local Jewish cemetery. Using Heritage Interpretation as the methodological basis of the project, the cemetery is presented as a focal point to the history of the Jewish community in Zittau.

Ulrich Herbert, einer der angesehensten Zeithistoriker der Gegenwart, geht in diesem Buch den spezifischen Merkmalen der nationalsozialistischen Diktatur nach und analysiert von den Ursprüngen des Judenhasses bis zum Werdegang einstiger NS-Funktionäre in der Bundesrepublik zentrale Themen der deutschen Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts. War es eine kleine Gruppe von Verbrechern, die das deutsche Volk ins Schlepptau nahm? Ein Projekt traditioneller Eliten? Oder doch eine von breiten Schichten der Bevölkerung getragene faschistische Bewegung? Die Antworten auf die Frage, wer die Nationalsozialisten waren, sind ebenso zahlreich wie die Versuche, personelle Kontinuitäten auszublenden und zwischen den Verbrechen des Regimes und der eigenen Verantwortung einen Trennstrich zu ziehen. Indem Ulrich Herbert diese Frage zum Ausgangspunkt seiner Studien nimmt, dringt er tief in den Charakter der NS-Diktatur ein und legt zentrale Aspekte ihrer Herrschaft frei.     Abstract: One quarter of all Holocaust victims lived on the territory that now forms Ukraine, yet the Holocaust there has not received due attention. This book delineates the participation of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and its armed force, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (Ukrainska povstanska armiia—UPA), in the destruction of the Jewish population of Ukraine under German occupation in 1941–44. The extent of OUN and UPA’s culpability in the Holocaust has been a controversial issue in Ukraine and within the Ukrainian diaspora as well as in Jewish communities and Israel. Occasionally, the controversy has broken into the press of North America, the EU, and Israel. Triangulating sources from Jewish survivors, Soviet investigations, German documentation, documents produced by OUN itself, and memoirs of OUN activists, it has been possible to establish that: OUN militias were key actors in the anti-Jewish violence of summer 1941; OUN recruited for and infiltrated police formations that provided indispensable manpower for the Germans' mobile killing units; and in 1943, thousands of these policemen deserted from German service to join the OUN-led nationalist insurgency, during which UPA killed Jews who had managed to survive the major liquidations of 1942.

    Abstract: Following tremendous advances in recent years in the study of religious belief, this volume adopts a fresh understanding of Jewish religious life in Poland. Approaches deriving from the anthropology, history, phenomenology, psychology, and sociology of religion have replaced the methodologies of social or political history that were applied in the past, offering fascinating new perspectives. The well-established interest in hasidism continues, albeit from new angles, but topics that have barely been considered before are well represented here too. Women’s religious practice gains new prominence, and a focus on elites has given way to a consideration of the beliefs and practices of ordinary people. Reappraisals of religious responses to secularization and modernity, both liberal and Orthodox, offer more nuanced insights into this key issue. Other research areas represented here include the material history of Jewish religious life in eastern Europe and the shift of emphasis from theology to praxis in the search for the defining quality of religious experience. The contemporary reassessments in this volume, with their awareness of emerging techniques that have the potential to extract fresh insights from source materials both old and new, show how our understanding of what it means to be Jewish is continuing to expand.

    Abstract: Apocryphal traditions, often shared by Jews and Christians, have played a significant role in the history of both religions. The 26 essays in this volume examine regional and linguistic developments in Ethiopia, Egypt, Syria, Armenia, the Balkans, and Italy. Dissenting groups, such as the Samaritans, followers of John the Baptist, and mediæval dualists are also discussed. Furthermore, the book looks at interactions of Judaism and Christianity with the religions of Iran. Seldom verified or authorized, and frequently rejected by Churches, apocryphal texts had their own process of development, undergoing significant transformations. The book shows how apocryphal accounts could become a medium of literary and artistic elaboration and mythological creativity. Local adaptations of Biblical stories indicate that copyists, authors and artists conceived of themselves as living not in a post-Biblical era, but in direct continuity with Biblical personages

Er benennt Kontinuitäten, Kausalitäten und parallele Entwicklungen. Dabei geht es um Themen wie Biopolitik, Eugenik und Zwangssterilisation, die Judenverfolgung in der Vorkriegszeit, die Morde im Rahmen der „Aktion T4“, die Krankenmorde in den Konzentrationslagern und im besetzten Polen, die „Aktion Reinhardt“ sowie die justizielle Ahndung der Verbrechen nach 1945. Die Untersuchungen erweitern unser Verständnis von den Verbrechen im Nationalsozialismus insgesamt und speziell zum Verhältnis von „Euthanasie“ und Holocaust.

    Abstract: ›Niedergang‹ oder ›Aufstieg‹ – zwischen diesen beiden Polen wurden bereits in der frühen ›Rassenhygiene‹ oder ›Eugenik‹ verschiedene Positionen eingenommen und Handlungsvorschläge unterbreitet, wie die sog. ›Entartung‹ der gesamten modernen ›Kulturmenschheit‹ aufgehalten bzw. deren sog. ›Höherzüchtung‹ vorangetrieben werden könnte. Die vorgeschlagenen Maßnahmen reichten dabei von reduzierter Hilfeleistung für sog. ›Schwache‹, über Heiratsförderungen oder -verbote und Zwangssterilisation bis hin zur staatlich gesteuerten Fortpflanzung der Menschen. Dies hatte zur Folge, dass sich zum Ende des 19. und am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts auch in Deutschland eine erhebliche Bandbreite an ›rassenhygienischer‹ Literatur entwickelte, welche die Grundlage der vorliegenden Diskursanalyse bildet. “Decline“ or “rise” – between these two poles of the early “Rassenhygiene” or “Eugenik” different positions and recommendations were proposed for the prevention of the so-called “Entartung” of the modern “Kulturmenschheit” or the promotion of the so-called “Höherzüchtung”. The suggested agendas covered limited assistance for so-called “weak”, special facilitation or ban of marriage and forced sterilization to the point of state-controlled reproduction of human beings. As a consequence, by the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century an extensive variety of “rassenhygienischer” literature emerged in Germany forming the basis for the present discourse analysis.
    Abstract: Angaben zur beteiligten Person Herms: Norbert Herms wurde 1984 in Zerbst geboren und studierte von 2004 bis 2011 Neuere und Neueste Geschichte, Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte und Politikwissenschaft an der TU Dresden. 2019 wurde er dort in Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte mit der diesem Buch zugrunde liegenden Dissertation promoviert.

    Abstract: Antisemitismus ist wieder sichtbar, teils offen, teils versteckt hinter "unbedachten " Äußerungen und Israelkritik. Doch wo beginnt der Antisemitismus, und wie neu ist, was wir heute erleben? Peter Schäfer beschreibt klar und konzise, wie sich seit der Antike antisemitische Stereotype verbreiteten, zu Verfolgung und Vernichtung führten und auch nach der Shoah virulent sind. Schon in der vorchristlichen Antike gab es Judenhass, Ghettos und Pogrome, doch erst die neutestamentlichen Schriften schufen mit ihrer Gegnerschaft zum Judentum die Voraussetzungen für Ritualmordlegenden und Verfolgungen im christlichen Mittelalter. Luther rief zur Auslöschung der "Teufelskinder" auf, die Aufklärer fanden das Judentum unvernünftig, Wissenschaftler begründeten den Judenhass rassistisch, und allzu viele waren bereit, sich an der "Endlösung der Judenfrage" zu beteiligen oder schauten lieber weg. Man könnte meinen, dass der Schock des Massenmordes heilsam war, doch Antizionismus und rechte Ideologien dringen seit Jahren mit antisemitischem Gepäck in die Mitte der Gesellschaft vor und bereiten den Boden für neue Gewalt. Peter Schäfers Buch ist Pflichtlektüre für alle, die besser verstehen wollen, warum der Antisemitismus so alt und zugleich so aktuell ist und was er für Juden in der Nachbarschaft, in Israel und überall auf der Welt bedeutet

    Abstract: "This volume includes contributions presented at two conferences, in Mainz and Jerusalem, and presents new discoveries of binding fragments in several European libraries and archives and abroad. It presents newly discovered texts with unknown Jewish writings from the Middle Ages and analyses fragments of well-known texts, such as textual witnesses of Midrashim. One chapter overviews recent discoveries in certain collections, some of them far beyond the geographical horizon of the original project, but certainly all of European origin. Other chapters study palaeographical and codicological issues of manuscript fragments and Ashkenazic inscriptions. A final article refers to the beginnings of scholarly interest in Hebrew binding fragments in Germany and sheds light on the part played by Christian Hebraists in its development"--

    Abstract: Am 6. Mai 1939 wurde mit einem Festakt auf der Wartburg in Eisenach das »Institut zur Erforschung und Beseitigung des jüdischen Einflusses auf das deutsche kirchliche Leben« auf der Grundlage einer Entschließung von elf evangelischen Landeskirchen gegründet. Das Institut war eng mit der Ideologie und Organisation der aus Thüringen stammenden »Kirchenbewegung Deutsche Christen« verbunden. Ziel dieser kirchenpolitischen Bewegung war es, den christlichen Glauben und die Institution der Kirche den Vorgaben der nationalsozialistischen Weltanschauung anzupassen. Die »Forschungsarbeiten« des kirchlichen »Entjudungsinstituts« dienten dazu, die Ausgrenzungs- und Verfolgungspolitik der nationalsozialistischen Machthaber gegenüber den Juden zu unterstützen und den Antisemitismus als Grundpfeiler der nationalsozialistischen Rasseideologie zu legitimieren. [»De-Jewification« of Theology and Church. The Eisenach "Institute for the Research and Elimination of Jewish Influence on German Church Life" 1939-1945 On 6 May 1939, at a ceremony at the Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, the »Institute for the Research and Elimination of Jewish Influence on German Church Life« was founded on the basis of a resolution passed by eleven Protestant regional churches. The Institute was closely connected with the ideology and organization of the »Church Movement German Christians«, which originated in Thuringia. The aim of this church political movement was to adapt the Christian faith and the institution of the church to the guidelines of the National Socialist world view. The »research work« of the ecclesiastical »Institute for De-Jewification« served to support the exclusion and persecution policy of the National Socialist rulers towards the Jews and to legitimize anti-Semitism as the cornerstone of the National Socialist racial ideology and to purify the Protestant Church from all alleged Jewish influences.

    Abstract: This book aims to create an integral picture of the social, economic and cultural history of the Jews in Lithuania during the course of more than six hundred years – from the Middle Ages to the 1990s. It is a translation of the study “Lietuvos žydai. Istorinė studija” (Engl. “Lithuanian Jews. Historical study”), published in Lithuanian in 2012. The Book was written by an interna-tional group of scholars from Lithuania, Israel, the United States of America and Germany.     Abstract: Postkoloniale Studien zählen aktuell zu den einflussreichsten kritischen Interventionen, was angesichts der massiven Effekte des Kolonialismus nicht verwundern kann. Postkoloniale Theorie zielt darauf ab, die verschiedenen Ebenen kolonialer Begegnungen zu analysieren und dabei die sozio-historischen Interdependenzen und Verflechtungen zwischen den Ländern des »Südens« und des »Nordens« herauszuarbeiten. Diese Einführung erschließt das weite Feld postkolonialer Theoriebildung über eine kritische Debatte der Schriften der drei prominentesten postkolonialen Stimmen – Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak und Homi Bhabha. Die aktualisierte dritte Auflage unterzieht insbesondere die neuen Schriften Spivaks und Bhabhas einer kritischen Würdigung, setzt sich aber auch mit den gegenwärtigen Diskussionen um Globalisierung, Religion, Menschenrechte und Dekolonisierung auseinander.

    Abstract: In A Stake in the Ground , Michael Schraer explores the economic functions of real estate amongst the Jews of the medieval crown of Aragon. He challenges the view of medieval Jews as primarily money-lenders and merchants, finding compelling evidence for extensive property trading and investment. Jews are found as landlords to Christian tenants, transferring land in dowries, wills and gifts. Property holdings were often extremely valuable. For some, property was a major part of their asset portfolios. Whilst many property transactions were linked to the credit boom, land also acted as a liquid and tradeable investment asset in its own right. This is a key contribution to the economic history of medieval Iberia and of medieval Jews

    Abstract: Versöhnung wird aus jüdischer Perspektive genau dann notwendig, wenn der einzelne Mensch oder die Gruppe die gebotene Lebensordnung überschreitet. Dann gilt es Mittel und Wege an der Hand zu haben oder zu finden, um in diese zurückkehren zu können. Schon zur Zeit des Alten Israel wurde ein Tag im Jahr zu eben jenem Zweck formalisiert, der sogenannte „Tag der Versöhnung“ (Jom Kippur).Dieser Band untersucht im Kontext des jüdischen Versöhnungstages das Versöhnungsgeschehen in verschiedenen Relationen: Gott-Mensch, Mensch-Mensch und mit Blick auf die Gegenwart auch die Versöhnung des Menschen mit sich selbst.     Abstract: Die vielfältigen Transformationen der Bibel in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart werden exemplarisch an jüdischen und christlichen Transformationen der Davidfigur und des Opfermotivs diskutiert. Die Autorinnen und Autoren dieses Bandes verstehen biblische Transformationen als Veränderungsprozesse von Referenzbereich und Aufnahmebereich, die in der Bibel selbst beginnen. Die im Anschluss an Untersuchungen innerbiblischer Transformationsprozesse behandelten literarischen, musikalischen und (religions-)didaktischen Transformationen von Davidfigur und Opfermotiv reichen vom Hochmittelalter bis in die Gegenwart und berücksichtigen Texte und Musikstücke jüdischer wie christlicher Provenienz. Gerade die Spannung zwischen zwei Narrationen mit anscheinend nur wenig Gemeinsamkeiten ermöglicht einen Blick auf die Unterschiede von Transformationsprozessen biblischer Figuren und Motive

    Abstract: "The authors publish a previously unedited Regimen of Health attributed to Avenzoar (Ibn Zuhr), translated at Montpellier in 1299 in a collaboration between a Jewish philosopher and a Christian surgeon, the former translating the original Arabic into their shared Occitan vernacular, the latter translating that into Latin. They use manuscript evidence to argue that the text was produced in two stages, first a quite literal version, then a revision improved in style and in language adapted to contemporary European medicine. Such collaborative translations are well known, but the revelation of the inner workings of the translation process in this case is exceptional. A separate Hebrew translation by the philosopher (also edited here) gives independent evidence of the lost Arabic original." --
