    Abstract: This collection of articles is tightly focused on metaphors in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible and their later afterlife in Jewish and Christian texts. The essays deal with a wide range of historical, literary, and methodological issues. First, several contributions employ metaphor theory in analysing the biblical texts, both conceptual frameworks such as blending theory and more traditional methods. Second, metaphors are studied both synchronically, that is, in relation to their current literary contexts, and diachronically, that is, mapping how they have been employed and re-interpreted in different ways and different texts throughout time. Third, other contributions read metaphors in light of theoretical frameworks such as feminist criticism, post-colonial theories, or power discourses that uncover aspects of significance often missed in historical studies. Finally, yet other contributions deal with the issue of how to translate metaphors in contemporary contexts

    Abstract: Much of the most recent research on Jewish scepticism was inspired by the work of the early modern Venetian rabbi Simone Luzzatto, the first thinker in the history of Jewish thought to declare himself a sceptic and a follower of the New Academy. This collected volume shines new light on the intimate relationship between Luzzatto’s sceptical thinking and an era marked by paradoxes and contrasts between religious devotion and scientific rationalism, as well as between the rabbinic-biblical Jewish tradition and the open tendency towards engagement with non-Jewish philosophical, literary, scientific, and theological cultures. It plots out an original path along which to understand Luzzatto’s scepticism by pointing to the various facets of being a Jewish sceptic in seventeenth-century Italy.

    Abstract: Hansestädtische Handelsfirmen profitierten von der Beteiligung an der deutschen Besatzung Polens während des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Zahlreiche Hamburger und Bremer Überseehandelsfirmen engagierten sich in der Besatzungswirtschaft des Generalgouvernements. Sie beteiligten sich zum einen an der brutalen Ausbeutung der polnischen Landwirtschaft. Zum anderen trugen sie dazu bei, die polnischen Jüdinnen und Juden auszurauben und wirtschaftlich zu verdrängen - ein wichtiger Schritt auf dem Weg zum Genozid. Die Kaufleute erhielten nicht nur einen Teil des Raubguts. Sie füllten auch die volkswirtschaftliche Lücke aus, die durch die Vernichtung der jüdischen Gemeinden entstand. Viele waren bis 1939 im Kolonialhandel tätig gewesen und rechtfertigten ihr Tun in Polen mit kolonialistischen und antisemitischen Deutungsmustern. Das für die hansestädtischen Unternehmen sehr profitable Geschäft bildete ein wesentliches Element der verbrecherischen deutschen Besatzung in Polen. Eine zentrale Rolle spielten dabei die Handelskammern Hamburgs und Bremens, die den »Osteinsatz« ihrer Kaufleute mit vorantrieben. Felix Matheis beleuchtet die bislang kaum bekannte Geschichte der lukrativen Zusammenarbeit zwischen hanseatischen Wirtschaftseliten und nationalsozialistischen Besatzungsbehörden.

    Abstract: Die Gesetzesthematik ist im hebräischen Esterbuch omnipräsent. Einerseits erzählt es von einem Königreich, in dem es für fast alles ein Gesetz gibt. Andererseits wird die Ausrottung von Esters und Mordechais Volk damit begründet, dass es anderen als den königlichen Gesetzen folge. Trotz dieses Befundes fehlt eine umfassende Untersuchung zu Bedeutung und Funktion des Themas. Die vorliegende Studie nimmt sich dieser Aufgabe an. Unter Berücksichtigung von Motivkonstellationen und intertextuellen Bezügen bietet sie eine ausführliche Analyse dieser Erzählfassung, die Gott bekanntlich unerwähnt lässt. Die Analyse erlaubt den Schluss, dass insbesondere der Motivkomplex "König als Ordnungsinstanz" eine theologische Dimension einspielt, denn im Spiegel irdisch-königlicher Rechtsverdrehung gewinnen der wahre Gottkönig JHWH und seine Tora an Kontur. Schließlich bietet die Studie eine Einordnung der Erzählung als Beitrag zum Toradiskurs der vormakkabäischen hellenistischen Zeit

    Abstract: The Hellenistic period was a pivotal moment in the history of the Jewish priesthood. The waning days of the Persian empire coincided with the continued ascendance of the high priest and Jerusalem temple as powerful political, cultural, and religious institutions in Judea. The Aramaic Scrolls from Qumran, only recently published in full, testify to the existence of a flourishing but previously unknown Jewish literary tradition dating from the end of Persian rule to the rise of the Hasmoneans. Throughout this book, Robert Jones analyzes how Israel’s priestly institutions are represented in these writings, and he demonstrates that they are essential for understanding the Jewish priesthood at this crucial stage in its history

    Abstract: Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, began his intellectual life with the Jewish Bible and also ended it with it. He began by reading the Philippson Bible together, especially with his father Jacob Freud, and ended by studying the figure of Moses. This study systematically traces this preoccupation and shows that the Jewish Bible was a constant reference for Freud and determined his Jewish identity. This is shown by analysing family documents, religious instruction and references to the Bible in Freud's writings and correspondence.

    Abstract: "The international conference "Psalms in Rituals from Antiquity to the Present," held on October 24-26, 2018, at the Max-Weber Kolleg in the University of Erfurt, Germany, aimed to showcase and also to build upon recent developments in what has become a very exciting field, bringing to it the distinctive perspective of the Research Centre "Dynamics of Jewish Ritual Practices in Pluralistic Contexts from Antiquity to the Present," which hosted the event. The Research Centre, which was funded from 2015 to 2020 by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF), investigated the dynamic relationship of rituals in pluralistic contexts and specifically in Jewish and Christian religious traditions. While religious institutions often focus on tradition, invariability, and rootedness in history, the Research Centre has found and studied numerous examples of innovation and change in regard to religious ritual practices. This landmark conference approached the subject of the Psalms as a dynamic part of Jewish liturgy, ritual, and community formation from a broad perspective. ... Turner beschrieben wurden. Israel hatte sich von JHWH entfernt. Um wieder in einen Status als Gottesvolk geführt werden zu können, muss ein dreistufiger Prozess durchlaufen werden, der die räumliche Entfernung aus Jerusalem und die Rückkehr beinhaltet. Die mittlere, liminale Phase, in der allein Israel erneuert werden kann, entspricht dem Exil. Beim Lesen des Ezechielbuches kann der Prozess performativ mitvollzogen werden, so dass auch die Lesenden transformiert werden. Die Untersuchung verbindet alttestamentliche Wissenschaft mit Raum- und Ritualtheorien.

These case studies document the different facets of Jewish music and theorize its multivalent correlation with spaces and collectives around the world. The thirty diverse chapters, conceived by an international team of thirty-one outstanding scholars, are divided into eight thematically organized sections, the first of which addresses Jewish music in various lands and territories (some without defined borders in time and space), followed by sections that focus on cities, as well selected spaces therein—ghetto, concert hall, archive, and sacred and ritual spaces. These sections, which largely look at actual and concrete spaces (roughly presented in the order of scale), are followed by the phenomenological spaces of destruction and remembrance, and shekhinah, that is, divine presence.

    Abstract: Theology is the science of the incomprehensible. Understood as an independent university discipline, it offers multifaceted perspectives that require not only an interdisciplinary but also an epistemological balancing act. In dreizehn Beiträgen beleuchten die internationalen Autor*innen aus unterschiedlichen disziplinären, aber auch erkenntnistheoretischen und religiösen Standpunkten das Phänomen von Theologie als eigenständiger wissenschaftlicher Disziplin, die stets zwischen Tradition, einer ihr eigenen Reflexivität und dem Bezug zur Welt changiert.     Abstract: Das 20. Jahrhundert war geprägt von Völkermorden. Die literarische Auseinandersetzung im deutschsprachigen Raum beschränkte sich dabei lange Zeit auf den nationalsozialistischen Judenmord. Anknüpfend an Ansätze der vergleichenden Genozidforschung und der literarischen Aufarbeitung der Shoah zeigt Gerald Manstetten, dass mittlerweile auch andere Genozide in den literarischen Fokus genommen werden. Am Beispiel von neun deutschsprachigen Werken weist er diese Entwicklung ebenso nach wie den noch immer starken Einfluss der Shoah auf das Schreiben über Genozide in deutscher Sprache.

    Abstract: Die vorliegende Dissertationsschrift beschäftigt sich mit Leben und Werk des deutsch-jüdischen Nervenarztes und Psychotherapeuten Ernst Jolowicz. Dieser wurde, trotz seiner regen wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit - unter anderem in Leipzig, bisher kaum von der medizinhistorischen Forschung berücksichtigt. Erstmalig rekonstruiert nun diese Arbeit die Biografie des Arztes vollständig und ordnet seine zahlreichen Publikationen unter anderem vor dem Hintergrund der Entwicklung der Psychotherapie und der Diskussion über traumatische Erkrankungen des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts ein. Jolowicz‘ Schriften erschienen in einem historisch äußerst bewegten Zeitraum: Sowohl in den letzten Jahren des Kaiserreichs als auch während der Weimarer Republik und dem beginnenden Dritten Reich veröffentlichte der Mediziner umfangreich und setzte sich sowohl für die Etablierung der Psychotherapie als ärztliche Disziplin als auch für ein patientenorientiertes, methodenübergreifendes Herangehen ein. Nach Adolf Hitlers Machtergreifung emigrierte Jolowicz zunächst nach Frankreich und später in die USA, wo er erneut wissenschaftlich arbeitete. Anhand dieser aufgespürten Facetten soll eine angesichts der wechselvollen deutschen Geschichte im erheblichen Maße beeinflusste Wissenschaftlerbiografie exemplarisch begreifbar gemacht werden. Ein besonderer Fokus wird weiterhin auf Jolowicz‘ Tätigkeit als Frontarzt während des Ersten Weltkrieges gelegt. Seine Erfahrungen, welche er an den Schützengräben der Westfront und als ärztlicher Leiter eines Posener Militärkrankenhauses gemacht hatte, schlugen sich in diversen Aufsätzen nieder. Durch die Auseinandersetzung mit diesen versucht die Dissertation zeittypische psychotherapeutische Entwicklungen während des Krieges offenzulegen und erörtert die Originalität inhaltlicher sowie methodologischer Ansätze Jolowicz‘.

    Abstract: Das Ezechielbuch verarbeitet die Katastrophe des Babylonischen Exils auf einzigartige Weise: Es zieht Symbolik von Übergangsriten (rites de passage) heran, um das Exil als notwendige Phase eines Prozesses darzustellen, der Israel und die Lesenden verändert. Über das ganze Ezechielbuch hinweg werden Räume und Bewegungen beschrieben. Sie lassen sich analog zu Symbolen in Übergangsritualen verstehen, wie sie von A. van Gennep und V. W. Turner beschrieben wurden. Israel hatte sich von JHWH entfernt. Um wieder in einen Status als Gottesvolk geführt werden zu können, muss ein dreistufiger Prozess durchlaufen werden, der die räumliche Entfernung aus Jerusalem und die Rückkehr beinhaltet. Die mittlere, liminale Phase, in der allein Israel erneuert werden kann, entspricht dem Exil. Beim Lesen des Ezechielbuches kann der Prozess performativ mitvollzogen werden, so dass auch die Lesenden transformiert werden. Die Untersuchung verbindet alttestamentliche Wissenschaft mit Raum- und Ritualtheorien

    Abstract: This study explores the identity of the Bene Israel caste from India and its assimilation into Israeli society. The large immigration from India to Israel started in the early 1950s and continued until the early 1970s. Initially, these immigrants struggled hard as they faced many problems such as the language barrier, cultural differences, a new climate, geographical isolation, and racial discrimination. This analysis focuses on the three major aspects of the integration process involving the Bene Israel: economic, socio-cultural and political. The study covers the period from the early fifties to the present. I will focus on the origin of the Bene Israel, which has evolved after their immigration to Israel; from a Hindu–Muslim lifestyle and customs they integrated into the Jewish life of Israel. Despite its ethnographic nature, this study has theological implications as it is an encounter between Jewish monotheism and Indian polytheism. [...]

    Abstract: Das 11. und 12. Jahrhundert ist eine Zeit christlich-jüdischer Begegnungen. Literarisch haben christliche Theologen diesen Austausch in sogenannten Kontroversdialogen verarbeitet. Diese Gattung gibt darüber Auskunft, wie ihre Autoren ihr christliches Selbstverständnis im Angesicht des Anderen verstanden und verstanden haben wollten. Die Monographie legt dar, wie Gilbert Crispin und Petrus Alfonsi als zwei prominente Vertreter in ihren Kontroversdialogen den persönlichen Kontakt mit Menschen jüdischen Glaubens sowie jenem der sogenannten Sarazener:innen, die Aufnahme der ratio in die Theologie im Rahmen der frühscholastischen Entwicklungen, die Frage nach der Konversion zum christlichen Glauben und die Bedeutung des nicht-christlichen Anderen für das eigene christliche Selbstverständnis präsentieren

    Abstract: "This volume presents the culmination of research on an almost ignored literary corpus: the translations into literary Italian of classical Hebrew texts made by Jews between 1550 and 1650. It includes dozens of poetical and philosophical texts and wisdom literature as well as dictionaries and biblical translations produced in what their authors viewed as a national tongue, common to Christians and Jews. In so doing, the authors/translators explicitly left behind the so-called Judeo-Italian. These texts, many of them being published for the first time, are studied in the context of intellectual and literary history. The book is an original contribution showing that the linguistic acculturation of German Jews in the late 18th century occurred in Italy 150 years earlier"

    Abstract: The translation of the Torah into Greek in Alexandria is an intriguing puzzle. Why was it undertaken at all? Was it a need of the Alexandrian Jews? Or did the Jewish wisdom intrigue the Egyptian ruler? Is the legend of the miraculous creation of the Septuagint a manifesto of cultural assimilation into the Hellenic culture? Does the Alexandrian Greek biblical exegesis, especially that of Philo, aim to break with the Hebrew tradition? According to this book, Philo, although not fluent in Hebrew himself, moves in the same shared Hebrew-Greek Torah universe that a closer look on the Septuagint legend reveals as well. Die Übersetzung der Tora ins Griechische in Alexandrien ist ein intrigierendes Rätsel. Warum wurde sie überhaupt unternommen? War sie ein Bedürfnis der alexandrinischen Juden? Oder machte die jüdische Weisheit den ägyptischen Herrscher neugierig? Ist die Legende über die wundersame Entstehung der Septuaginta ein Manifest der kulturellen Assimilation an die hellenische Kultur? Bezweckt die alexandrinische griechische Bibelexegese, vor allem diejenige Philons, den Bruch mit der hebräischen Tradition und die Anpassung an die hellenistische Philosophie?     Abstract: Questions of purity are dealt with in a variety of ways in ancient texts. A key to understanding lies in the significance purity has for the construction, description and maintenance of social identity and how this affects representations of purity.Reinheitsfragen werden in antiken Texten vielfältig verhandelt. Ein Schlüssel zum Verständnis liegt dabei in der Frage, welche Bedeutung Reinheit für die Konstruktion, Beschreibung und den Erhalt sozialer Identität hat und wie sich dies auf Reinheitsdarstellungen auswirkt
    Abstract: Why do questions of purity play a minor role in the New Testament when the majority of the texts are of Jewish origin and character? To answer this question, the present study analyses the forming of identity as a central function to purity in ancient Jewish sources. Using the theory of social identity according to Henri Taijfel and John Turner, Milena Hasselmann examined the importance of purity texts in the New Testament and in other ancient Jewish sources for the construction of social identity. On a broad basis of sources and with the help of Hebrew-language literature, which is little received in the German and English-language scientific context, it becomes a meaningful picture that places the purity texts of the New Testament in its wider environment. In doing so, she shows that the New Testament's handling of questions of purity is to be seen in continuity rather than discontinuity with other ancient traditions. Warum nehmen Reinheitsfragen einen verhältnismäßig geringen Stellenwert im Neuen Testament ein, wenn die Texte mehrheitlich jüdischen Ursprungs und jüdischer Prägung sind? Dieser Frage geht die vorliegende Studie nach und setzt zu ihrer Beantwortung bei einer zentralen Funktion, die Reinheit in anderen antiken jüdischen Quellen zukommt, ein: Reinheitsbestimmungen sind identitätsstiftend. Mit der Theorie der Sozialen Identität nach Henri Tajfel und John Turner untersucht Milena Hasselmann, welche Bedeutung Reinheitstexte im Neuen Testament und in anderen antikjüdischen Quellen für die Konstruktion sozialer Identität haben. Auf einer breiten Quellenbasis und unter Hinzuziehung hebräischsprachiger Literatur, die im deutsch- und englischsprachigem Wissenschaftskontext wenig rezipiert wird, entwirft sie ein aussagekräftiges Bild, das die Reinheitstexte des Neuen Testament in dessen weitere Umwelt einordnet. Sie zeigt damit, dass der neutestamentliche Umgang mit Reinheitsfragen in Kontinuität zu anderen antiken Traditionen zu sehen ist

    Abstract: Collaborative engagement between activist academics from Israel and Northern Ireland highlighted the challenges and potential of working through education to promote shared learning and shared life in divided societies. Following these initial explorations, the volume brought together educationalists from Europe, the United States and South Africa to widen the range of experience and insights, and broaden the base of the conversation. The result is this book on the role of shared education, not only in deeply divided societies, but also in places where minorities face discrimination, where migrants face prejudice and barriers, or where society fails to deal positively with cultural diversity. Together, the contributors challenged themselves to develop theoretical and practical paradigms, based on practical knowledge and experience, to promote activist pedagogies. Their shared purpose was to work for more humane, just and democratic societies, in which education offers genuine hope for sustained transformational change. The four main themes around which the book is organized are: educating for democratic-multicultural citizenship, models of shared learning, nurturing intercultural competencies, and reconciling dialogue in the face of conflicting narratives. Durch das Prisma einer Stadt werden die wichtigsten Fragen polnisch-jüdischer Beziehungsgeschichte gestellt, u.a. zur Rolle der nichtjüdischen Polen während des Holocaust und zum Antisemitismus im Polen der Nachkriegszeit.

The National Socialist era still has repercussions on society today. But how is the Shoah addressed in studies and teaching? This book examines the history of the impact of the Shoah in various settings of education and reflects on the theoretical and empirical research to date. Knowledge about and references to the Shoah continue to be transmitted between generations and at the same time are continuously updated in institutional and discursive contexts of contemporary society. This affects educators in several ways: in their own biographies and learning histories and in their subsequent teaching practice. The authors deal, among other things, with the politics of memory, the inheritance of feelings and the possibility of addressing the Shoah in various socialisation processes.

    Abstract: In the Hellenistic period, Jews participated in the imagination of a cosmopolitan world and they developed their own complex cultural forms. In this panoramic and multifaceted book, René Bloch shows that the ancient Jewish diaspora is an integral part of what we understand as Hellenism and argues that Jewish Hellenism epitomizes Hellenism at large. Relying on Greek, Latin and Hebrew sources, the fifteen papers collected in this volume trace the evidence of ancient Jews through meticulous studies of ruins, literature, myth and modern reception taking the reader on a journey from Philo’s Alexandria to a Roman bust in a Copenhagen museum

Centered on the Serekh ha-Yaḥad - or Community Rule - from Qumran as a test case, this volume tracks the development of its textual tradition in multiple trajectories, and suggests that it was not understood as a single, unified composition even in antiquity. Attending to material, textual, and literary factors, the book argues that ancient claims for textual identity ought to be given priority in discussions among textual critics about the ontology of biblical books

    Abstract: The present volume focuses on Henry Bate of Mechelen (1246–after 1310), the first scholar to bring Ibn Ezra’s astrological work to the knowledge of Latin readers. The volume has two main objectives. The first is to offer as complete and panoramic an account as possible of Bate’s translational project. Therefore, this volume offers critical editions of all six of Bate’s complete translations of Ibn Ezra’s astrological writings. The second objective is to accompany Bate’s Latin translations with literal English translations and to offer a thorough collation of the Latin translation (with their English translations) against the Hebrew and French source texts. This is volume 2 of a two-volume set

    Abstract: A History of Anti-Semitism examines the history, culture and literature of antisemitism from antiquity to the present. With contributions from an international team of scholars, whose essays were specially commissioned for this volume, it covers the long history of antisemitism starting with ancient Greece and Egypt, through the anti-Judaism of early Christianity, and the medieval era in both the Christian and Muslim worlds when Jews were defined as 'outsiders,' especially in Christian Europe. This portrayal often led to violence, notably pogroms that often accompanied Crusades, as well as to libels against Jews. The volume also explores the roles of Luther and the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the debate over Jewish emancipation, Marxism, and the social disruptions after World War 1 that led to the rise of Nazism and genocide. Finally, it considers current issues, including the dissemination of hate on social media and the internet and questions of definition and method.

    Abstract: "Euclid's Elements is one of the canonical texts that shaped our cultural heritage. It was translated from Greek into Arabic and from Arabic into Hebrew and Latin. There is little agreement about the textual history of the Arabic translations. The present book offers for the first time a critical edition of two Hebrew translations of Books I-II, by Moses Ibn Tibbon and by "Rabbi Jacob". A serious attempt is made to learn from the Hebrew translations also about the history of the Arabic text. The edition of Ibn Tibbon's translation is accompanied by an Arabic text which was probably its source. Rabbi Jacob's translation is compared to the Latin translation ascribed to Adelard of Bath, probably based on the same Arabic tradition"--

    Abstract: In The Theological Profile of the Peshitta of Isaiah , Attila Bodor explores theological elements in the book of Isaiah as represented in the Peshitta. Through a close study of its interpretative renderings, the author shows that this lesser-known ancient version is not only an important witness to textual history and a repository of early exegetical traditions but also testifies to the beliefs of the early Syriac-speaking community from which the Peshitta emerged. In the monograph, sixty-three Peshitta divergences from the Hebrew version of Isaiah are collected and analyzed in order to illustrate the theological implications and the impact of these divergent renderings on the interpretation and reception of the major Isaianic themes that treat God, the Messiah, and the people of God

    Abstract: Dieser Band untersucht anhand ausgewählter dänischer Prosa im 19. Jahrhundert die Ambivalenz philosemitischer Literatur. Es wird gezeigt, wie bestehende Vorstellungen über Juden und Jüdinnen einerseits literarisch entlarvt und gebrochen werden, und wie andererseits jüdische Figuren weiterhin Projektionsfläche und christliches Phantasma bleiben. Philosemitismus wird als spezifisch literarisches Phänomen betrachtet, indem gefragt wird, welche Erzählmöglichkeiten sich durch die jüdischen Figuren im Text eröffnen und was diese Figuren literarisch so attraktiv macht. Obwohl die untersuchten Texte zumeist um das Thema Religion kreisen, interessieren sie sich kaum für das Judentum ihrer jüdischen Figuren. Vielmehr dienen die Juden und Jüdinnen dazu, das Christentum aufzuwerten und zu erneuern. Dabei spielen Fragen nach Politik und nationalem Selbstverständnis ebenso eine Rolle wie nach Geschlecht, Begehren und der Bedeutung von Kunst.

    Abstract: "Semantic studies of the Biblical Hebrew verb "whole" have been influenced by those of its most invoked nominal form "whole". In this volume Andrew Chin Hei Leong shows that the concepts of balance, alliance, and completeness form the basic semantic structure of "whole". Previous studies on "whole" employed either historical or textual methodology, which has been dominant in biblical lexical studies. In addition to these methods, in Leong develops a systematic semantic methodology from Cognitive Semantics and Frame Semantics, to demonstrate that it is balance, rather than completeness, that is the most central concept in holding the semantic network together"--

    Abstract: In Sirach and Its Contexts an international cohort of experts on the book of Sirach locate this second-century BCE Jewish wisdom text in its various contexts: literary, historical, philosophical, textual, cultural, and political. First compiled by a Jewish sage around 185 BCE, this instruction enjoyed a vibrant ongoing reception history through the middle ages up to the present, resulting in a multiform textual tradition as it has been written, rewritten, transmitted, and studied. Sirach was not composed as a book in the modern sense but rather as an ongoing stream of tradition. Heretofore studied largely in confessional settings as part of the Deuterocanonical literature, this volume brings together essays that take a broadly humanistic approach, in order to understand what an ancient wisdom text can teach us about the pursuit of wisdom and human flourishing

In Gelübde im antiken Judentum und frühesten Christentum Daniel Schumann aims to trace the earliest discourses on vows, as they are recorded in ancient Jewish and early Christian sources from the time of the Second Temple. He also shows how Judaism and Christianity have participated in ancient forms of vow-making since late antiquity and how they also have developed these discourses further. By presenting these discourses on the basis of a broad range of sources, he reveals how in Jewish as well as in Christian perception, voices of esteem but also of reservation have been raised throughout the centuries. After all, vows are a cult-practical exercise in which well-being and disaster are in closer proximity than in most other acts of devotion

    Abstract: "In Unveiling the Hidden-Anticipating the Future: Divinatory Practices Among Jews Between Qumran and the Modern Period, Josefina Rodríguez-Arribas and Dorian Gieseler Greenbaum collect ten studies based on primary sources ranging from Qumran to the modern period and covering Europe and the Mediterranean basin. The studies show Jews practising divination (astrology, bibliomancy, physiognomy, dream requests, astral magic, etc.) and implementing the study and practice of the prognostic arts in ways that allowed Jews to make them "Jewish," by avoiding any conflict with Jewish law or halakhah.     Abstract: In The "God of Israel" in History and Tradition , Michael Stahl provides a foundational study of the formulaic title "god of Israel" ( 'elohe yisra'el ) in the Hebrew Bible. Employing critical theory on social power and identity, and through close literary and historical analysis, Dr. Stahl shows how the epithet "god of Israel" evolved to serve different social and political agendas throughout the course of ancient Israel and Judah's histories. Reaching beyond the field of Biblical Studies, Dr. Stahl's treatment of the historical and ideological significances of the title "god of Israel" in the Hebrew Bible offers a fruitful case study into the larger issue of the ways in which religion may shape-and be shaped by-social and political structures
