Abstract: "In his three-volume history, Antony Polonsky provides a comprehensive survey—socio-political, economic, and religious—of the Jewish communities of eastern Europe from 1350 to the present. Until the Second World War, this was the heartland of the Jewish world: nearly three and a half million Jews lived in Poland alone, while nearly three million more lived in the Soviet Union. Although the majority of the Jews of Europe and the United States, and many of the Jews of Israel, originate from these lands, their history there is not well known. Rather, it is the subject of mythologizing and stereotypes that fail both to bring out the specific features of the Jewish civilization which emerged there and to illustrate what was lost. Jewish life, though often poor materially, was marked by a high degree of spiritual and ideological intensity and creativity. Antony Polonsky recreates this lost world—brutally cut down by the Holocaust and less brutally but still seriously damaged by the Soviet attempt to destroy Jewish culture. Wherever possible, the unfolding of history is illustrated by contemporary Jewish writings to show how Jews felt and reacted to the complex and difficult situations in which they found themselves." --

Abstract: This article argues that the current predominant interpretation of the use of Psalm 16 in the speech in Acts 2, namely the ‘proof’ from prophecy explanation, as well as the few other models which have been advanced, are unconvincing on narratival grounds. Instead, it suggests that the Psalm is primarily quoted as a rationale to explain why Jesus rose from the dead and death could not detain him – namely because of his righteousness. The article concludes by submitting that this reading sheds important new light on the meaning of the resurrection of Jesus as a divine necessity in the early kerygma in Acts.

Abstract: This article examines the innovative focus on Sabbath observance that characterizes the Holiness legislation (H). By comparing H's conception of the Sabbath with what is known about this sacred time from other biblical and extrabiblical sources, I demonstrate that H creatively blends two aspects of the Sabbath that were not always connected: (1) the idea, already present in the Decalogue and Gen 2:2–3, that the Sabbath is a time of cessation held every seventh day; and (2) the more traditional associations of the Sabbath with sacrificial rites at the shrine. I conclude by assessing the implications of H's dual requirements of Sabbath observance—that is, both the cessation of labor and the accompanying sanctuary rituals—for contextualizing the H materials in the history of ancient Israel. I suggest that the prominence of the Sabbath in Lev 17–26 may not reflect H's origins in the “templeless” situation of the Babylonian exile, as is often argued. H's distinctive concept of the Sabbath may rather reflect a Persian-period context, when collective obligations to the cult were renegotiated to ensure the success of the Second Temple.

Abstract: The question implied in the title of this article “A stairway to heaven?” in reference to Genesis 28:10-22 can be answered negatively. The word סלם does not designate a ladder or a stairway, since it has no steps. It is not even set up to heaven. It is, first of all, the gradient access road of a city, envisioned here as a descent road built from the top downwards, leading from the city of gods to the earth.

Abstract: In Ps 89,47-52 the psalmist raises his voice in angry protest against YHWH. He accuses him of abandoning his anointed one. Even worse, YHWH’s action of ברא with regard to all human beings seems to be 'futile' or 'based on random grounds' (שוא). This combination of terms is quite unique. By introducing the notion of 'arbitrariness', the psalmist comments on YHWH’s seemingly random selection of a shorter life or a longer life for someone, and thus raises doubts in the mind of his audience. Is the steadfast love that YHWH showed in the past for David and his servants also transient and based on vanity? Upon this explicit and implicit accusation of fickleness YHWH has to react.

Abstract: This paper examines the message of Qohelet’s Catalogue of Times and its interpretive appendix. Scholars disagree on the extent to which this unit deviates from the traditional free-will theology of the Bible. The paper presents a fresh reading of the passage, which sheds new light on the problem of determinism in Qohelet. Beginning by a novel delineation for the unit, it then suggests fresh solutions for the main exegetical cruxes of the passage (3:14, 15, 17), and finally presents an innovative, somewhat radical, understanding of Qohelet’s approach towards the problem of free will.

Abstract: This chapter will explore particular practices that have emerged in the context of post-Holocaust Catholic-Jewish dialogue, reading them as instances of interrituality and analyzing the extent to which their interriting advances the project of reconciliation. One advantage of investigating interreligious exchange through the lens of ritual is that it permits attention to be paid to a range of extra-textual phenomena such as tone, gesture, pacing, costume, and locatedness, which are capable of adding nuance to, or even subverting, a textual tradition. In the case of post-Holocaust reconciliation, it is worth considering whether and to what degree a consideration of ritual alters the conclusions that can be drawn from the record of published documents.

Abstract: Several studies in recent years have sought to articulate the significance of the tribe of Benjamin for historical and literary studies of the Hebrew Bible. This paper suggests that the received text of Genesis 35-50 both reflects and illumines the complexities of Israelite identity in the pre-exilic, Babylonian, and Persian periods. The fact that Benjamin is the only son born to "Israel" (other sons are born to "Jacob") points to Israel's origins in the land that came to be called "Benjaminite." Between Josephites to the north and Judahites to the south, Benjaminites preserved a unique identity within the polities of Israel, Judah, Babylonian Yehud, and Persian Yehud. In Genesis 35 and 42-45 in particular, the silent character Benjamin finds himself in the middle of a tug-of-war between his brothers, particularly his full-brother Joseph and his half-brother Judah. The conciliatory message of the narrative of Genesis 35-50 for later communities comes into sharper focus when we see the compromise between tribal identities embedded in the text.1

Abstract: The last two centuries have seen a growing focus on matters concerned with the natural environment. This is not only true for the natural sciences, but allfields of inquiry, including that of theology and religion. Building on the work of eco-theologians and scholars of eco-hermeneutics, this article aims to determine whether, and to what extent, translation has a role to play in promoting these efforts. Consequently, usingEco's (2004) notion of "translation as negotiation" as blueprint, the author first delineates what an eco-conscious translation entails before showing its practical application in Jonah 3:1-10. In the end, such a rendering does not diverge too much from the Hebrew text or other more established English translations. However, the changes it introduces are ideologically significant. Moreover, the process may prove to be an important tool if the Judeo-Christian tradition still has a role to play in battling different environmental challenges.

Abstract: This article examined Mal 2:16 in relation to the prohibition of divorce today in some churches in Nigeria. The text is perhaps the most commonly quoted passage by preachers to support prohibition of divorce, possibly because many of the English versions make it a direct condemnation from God and preachers rarely consider other English versions that read differently. It was found out that the passage relates to certain Jewish men who divorced their native wives and married women of foreign faiths. It was also discovered that in view of Deut 24:14, among other OT texts, Mal 2:16 could not have prohibited divorce. Rather, what it condemns is the purpose of the divorce, namely to marry women of foreign faiths. Hence, Mal 2:16 is relevant in contemporary Nigeria, not as a prohibition of divorce, but in the context of marriage abandonment.

Abstract: Psalm 35 appears to be one of the scariest Psalms because of the various expressions of hate and the Psalmist invoking wrath and death on his enemies. In the Western context, it is not one of the favourites of the Psalms. However, in a Yoruba context, Psalm 35 is one of the favourites because of its use for purposes of defence, victory, and protection. The purpose of this article is to discuss how Psalm 35 is used in a Yoruba context to meet the peculiar need of Yoruba people against enemies. Although there are similarities and differences between Psalm 35 and Yoruba ofo oro ogede, the similarities actually influence Yoruba Christians and non-Christians to use Psalm 35 like ofo or madarikan, orogede with a firm belief that it contains a more mysterious power from God than the Yoruba ofo, ogede and madarikan. Psalm 35 is, therefore, read, memorized, chanted, sung or inscribed in parchment to express the African faith, and their personal origin from God. Psalm 35 is also read in order to motivate God to perform a miracle as he has done originally with the people of ancient Israel.

Abstract: By using the narrative device of contrastive characterization, the author of Ruth demonstrates three return-from-exile scenarios that act as a model for the audience. Orpah served as Ruth's foil and represents a return to the pagan culture. Naomi and Ruth project a role reversal. While Naomi returns more like a pagan than a Jewess, Ruth has demonstrated covenant fidelity and illustrated loyalty to YHWH and Israel. She is thus a model for how Jews ought to return from exile to exodus.

Abstract: The phenomenon of ritual criticism in prophetic writings of the HB/OT is one that highlights the discrepancy between ritual and lifestyle on the one hand and emphasizes the significance of rituals for the improvement of ethical life of people. Rituals are viewed as Ancient Israelite's vertical dimension of the relationship between God and man while ethics are its horizontal components (man to man relationship). In Micah, rituals are presented as acts of people's relationship with Yahweh (worship, offering and sacrifices) that do not impact positively on the horizontal dimension (socialjustice). This dysfunction of relationship is poignantly addressed by Micah as his oracle switches from confrontation to reconciliation. This article addresses the confrontation between Yahweh and Israel/Judah by juxtaposing two dominant spheres of Israel/Judah's religious life; ritual and lifestyle. Micah 6:6-8 stands in sharp contrast to the extravagance and mockery of rituals and as an alternative presents a message most profound and insightful for an invaluable decision. A truly ethical religion, Micah holds, is not about extravagant rituals but personal duty and responsibility for fulfilling that duty in society.

Abstract: Commentaries on Jer 8:18–23 generally recognize that this celebrated passage represents a cohesive lament over the destruction facing Judah. Exegesis of the passage has been impaired, however, by the opacity of the lament's opening verse and particularly of its initial word, a notorious crux interpretum. In this article, I analyze the word in light of the Akkadian noun balaggu. I offer a new reading of the verse and explore the Mesopotamian cultural influences that appear to have been at work in the composition of the lament.

Abstract: Attending to ongoing debates about the “meaning of life” in Ecclesiastes, this article determines how Qoheleth addressed meaningfulness by drawing on a threefold scheme of definitions for life’s meaning. These definitions are derived from psychological research and used to argue that all three conceptions appear within the book of Ecclesiastes. Qoheleth was primarily concerned with life’s “coherence,” which depends on predictable and reliable patterns in life that render it sensible, yet he also addressed life’s “purpose” and “significance.” While primarily determining how these three forms of meaning, along with their attendant ideas, are handled within Ecclesiastes itself, this article also demonstrates how resources from psychological research help to resolve debates among biblical interpreters, who agree far more than it at first appears once clearer definitions of “meaning” are employed.

Abstract: In the Pentateuch, the appellation ʾōhel mȏʿēd denotes both the Israelite tabernacle and the tent of meeting evoked in Exod 18, 7-12; Exod 33,7-11; Num 27,1-23 and Deut 31,14-15. The latter venue, exclusively associated with the figure of Moses, is characterized by the absence of priestly function, cultic service, sacrifices, and ritual. The involvement of Jethro in its inauguration (Exodus 18), together with its metallurgical affinities and its similarities with the tent-sanctuary found in Timna (southern Arabah), suggest that the tent is borrowed from Qenite Yahwistic traditions. The importance of this shrine is revealed by its being the site of dialogue with the deity and the consequent elaboration of Israelite legislation (the Law of Moses). It is also reflected by the transfer to the Israelite Tabernacle (miškān) of some of its essential characteristics. It is concluded that, instead of reflecting an Israelite tradition parallel to that of the Tabernacle, Moses’ tent of meeting expresses in the Pentateuch the transitory phase of emergence of the Israelite religion from primeval Qenite Yahwism.

Abstract: The story of Korah is mentioned in two different contexts in two adjacent chapters outside the story itself in Num 16–17. The first is in the account of the census of the Israelites at the Plains of Moab (Num 26:9–11). The second is in the story of Zelophehad's daughters (Num 27:3). Apart from these occurrences, the clan of the Korahites appears as part of the Levites in the census account (Num 26:58). In this article, I argue that all three occurrences of Korah are secondary in their context and were interpolated into Num 26–27 as part of a struggle within the circles of the Levites and priesthood concerning the status of the Korahites.

Abstract: Ezekiel 20 presents one of the most striking oracles in prophetic literature. Within the setting of an inquiry of the prophet by the elders of Israel in Babylon, the prophet rehearses a highly idiosyncratic and radically negative narrative of Israel's early history. Particularly unprecedented are the assertions that the second exodus generation sinned in the wilderness just as did the first generation, and that YHWH determined the future exile in response to this. Further, it is asserted that YHWH gave Israel bad laws that would decimate them, including the sacrifice of firstborn children. The oracle concludes with the eschatological promise of a reconstitution of Israel in the land, but only after the rebellious Israelites, who want to remain in the diaspora, are forcibly brought into the wilderness and eliminated.

Abstract: Poetry complicates the diachronic study of Second Isaiah. However, the possibility of such a study is demonstrated through a diachronic explanation of the distribution of the prepositions את and עם in the Hebrew Bible. On the other hand, the Aramaisms in Second Isaiah are shown to be conscious and for poetic purposes and therefore labeled as single-word switches that do not prove the lateness of Second Isaiah.

Abstract: Commentators discussing Matt 26,14-16 frequently mention that thirty pieces of silver was the price of an enslaved person. Matthew, however, is the only Evangelist to record that thirty pieces of silver was the amount received by Judas for betraying Jesus. This paper discusses whether this figure is historical and, if not, what Matthew’s possible motive would be for inserting the sum in his account. After an analysis of Hebrew Bible slave prices and first-century slave prices from documentary papyri and literary sources, I conclude that this figure has no connection to slave prices but rather was used by Matthew to allude to Zechariah 11 and to depict the high priests as wicked shepherds and Jesus as the good shepherd.

Abstract: Despite ample research on the background, composition, and redaction of Dan 7, scholarship has not adequately addressed the exhortative function of this text in its sociopolitical context. Daniel 7 contains helpful clues to the kind of “action” (Dan 11:32) that the book is encouraging its audience to pursue in response to Seleucid rule and oppression. This aspect, however, has remained underdeveloped even by scholars who have recognized how Daniel promotes a nonmilitaristic resistance to violent oppression. In contrast to Carol Newsom's claim (2017) that Dan 7 has a muted sense of resistance when compare to chapter 2, I argue that chapter 7 develops the message of chapter 2 and envisions nonviolent covenant fidelity as the proper resistance to persecution by gentile rulers. The imagery in Dan 7 pertaining to the origin and representation of the beasts and the kingdom that is applied to the humanlike figure is crucial to understanding the exhortative purpose of the vision. This purpose is brought into sharp relief when Dan 7 is juxtaposed with 1 and 2 Maccabees and the Animal Apocalypse in 1 Enoch.

Abstract: Job 18 depicts the destruction of the wicked as a kind of ambush by “the firstborn of death.” Much of the discussion of this passage has centered on this figure’s identification, and whether one should look primarily to Ugaritic or Mesopotamian mythological traditions for its background. Yet the passage as a whole concludes with a reference to a single “God,” knowledge of whom is determinative for human fate. This raises a basic question concerning the relation between “God” and the “firstborn of death.” Through a close comparison with the Ugaritic Baal Cycle and the Neo-Assyrian Underworld Vision on the one hand, and Job 5 and Deuteronomy 32 on the other, this paper argues that “the firstborn of death” most likely does represent a chthonic deity, but that such powers have been subordinated to the one God whom Bildad presumes to bear sole authority over life and death.

Abstract: The Priestly author in Leviticus 1–16 uses terms connected to sex and gender, both gender-specific terms like זכר, אשה, איש, and נקבה and gender-neutral terms such as אדם and נפש, as technical terminology. P's precise usage reflects a carefully structured view of the world and of the cult that is aimed at safeguarding the people's purity. In addition, P seems to recognize the difference between biological sex and gender related to personhood, something more akin to what we might term socially constructed gender.

Abstract: According to a common scholarly model of Israelite religion, the deity El disappears under a rising tide of Yahwism sometime in the early monarchic period. In this article, by contrast, I use several texts preserved in the Jacob cycle to argue that El remained a distinct deity at Bethel until at least the eighth century BCE and possibly much later. I also argue on the basis of 1 Kgs 12:25–30 that El did not begin to lose ground to YHWH at Bethel until Jeroboam II introduced YHWH to Bethel as a subordinate deity in the eighth century BCE.

Abstract: This study uses the case of Holocaust Day in Israel to examine the premise that national days impact national identity and collective memory. Specifically, the study examines whether a very unique type of national day - Holocaust Day - impacts national identification, nationalism, and collective memory in the form of Israeli Jews' perceptions of the “lessons” of the Holocaust. This study uses panel survey design data on national identity and perceptions of the Holocaust's lessons from the same sample of Israeli Jews (N = 665) collected two months prior to Holocaust Day and again during and after Holocaust Day. During and after Holocaust Day, respondents expressed increased levels of nationalism and more perceptions of both particularistic and universalistic Holocaust lessons. Participation in Holocaust Day practices had a stronger relationship with nationalism and national identification during Holocaust Day than before but a weaker relationship with the perception of a universalistic lesson during Holocaust Day. These findings indicate that Holocaust Day impacts national identity and collective memory and highlights the multifaceted nature of the relationships between national identity, collective memory, and national days. The theoretical implication of the findings as well as the case comparability are discussed in light of the findings.

Abstract: Modern biblical scholarship since at least Wilhelm Caspari (1909) has tended to oppose the literary quality of the Davidic Succession Narrative to its historical value: its enduring artistic success is assumed to be a result of radically transforming the events and attitudes it describes. But how would we know which of its enduring literary aspects were contemporary, driven by Iron Age ideologies? This article reconsiders the relationship between the literariness and the historicity of the Succession Narrative via new and underutilized evidence for the political audience of Absalom's revolt (2 Sam 15–19). First, Absalom is depicted as using a highly distinctive type of political discourse in which granting audience and judgment to all community members is a condition of kingship. This set of tropes is specific to West Semitic literary cultures over at least a millennium and helps explain the plausibility and appeal of the story to an audience familiar with tribal political ideals. Scholars have tended to center such an audience in the northern kingdom of Israel, which would have disintegrated after 722 BCE. But, second, inscriptional evidence demonstrates that by the eighth century both northern and southern Hebrew writers shared scribal training, the foundation of a common literary culture. Data for their shared training are widely agreed on but often neglected in treatments of early Hebrew literature. Taken together, these factors suggest that the most plausible way to explain the vitality of “northern” political perspectives in Judahite stories like this one is connected to the early role of Hebrew narrative prose. It could circulate beyond any single narrow party to a public interested in imagining a shared if disturbing past. This account helps explain the story's success as both literature and memory, how it spoke to an audience beyond any royal court.

Abstract: This article asks for the possible sociological and theological background of the so-called Psalms of the Righteous in the Book of Psalms. First, I discuss Christoph Levin’s understanding of this group of psalms. Then I make a close reading of Psalm 141 as a psalm which is obsessed with the implied psalmist’s fear of urging a heterodox theology. On the background of theories of “Charter Groups” (John Porter, John Kessler) and “Carrier Groups” (J.C. Alexander) and of Mary Douglas’ “group-grid theory” I propose to place Psalm 141 as well as Psalms 1, 37, and 73 within the intellectual framework of an enclave of ṣaddiqîm in Persian period Judah (and later).

Abstract: The prolific study of prophets and prophetic literature has produced several influential scholarly paradigms over the nineteenth, twentieth, and now twenty-first centuries. This article calls attention to two of the paradigms that have shaped our scholarly mind-sets—literary criticism and redaction criticism—and asks what stands behind the different treatments of Jeremiah and Ezekiel, the prophets and their books, in these strands of biblical scholarship. The discussion raises challenges to these paradigms concerning three topics: prophets as personae (historical or literary), prophetic activity within the societies of Israel and Judah, and the literary evolution of prophetic literature.
