Abstract:
Horkheimer's article, published in 1939, is significant because it allows insight into how a certain segment of Jewish German emigres viewed Nazism - i.e. as a totalitarian system which had developed from liberal capitalism (largely sustained by Jewish capitalists) in order to oppose socialism and communism - from their restricted knowledge of the given situation. Zuckermann raises the question whether German Jewry, had it not been persecuted by the Nazi regime, would have supported the totalitarian system. He then relates to the memorialization of the Holocaust in Israel, and criticizes the politicization of Holocaust commemoration in order to justify the ideology of the Israeli state, particularly the occupation since 1967 and its consequences.
