Abstract:
The pontificate of Ramon Despont (1289-1312) was a difficult period for the Jews of Valencia. Their situation had worsened before, due to heavy taxation imposed on them by the kings and royal support for the missionary campaigns of Dominicans and Franciscans, which, inter alia, enhanced the hostility of Christians toward Jews. In 1305 Bishop Ramon tried to close the synagogue in Morvedre; he also initiated a campaign against Jewish usury. The bishop's public agitation against synagogues and Jewish usury poisoned relations between Jews and Christians and caused anti-Jewish riots during Holy Week in 1304 and 1305, and an especially violent one in 1308. When the king began preparations for a campaign against Muslim Almeria and was in need of money, Bishop Ramon understood why the king supported Jewish moneylending and ceased his campaign against usury.
