Abstract:
A detailed analysis of anti-Jewish images in the Gulbenkian Apocalypse (Lisbon), an illuminated manuscript of the Book of Revelation from the 1260s, sharing the same French-style anti-Jewish iconography as in the Abingdon Apocalypse (British Library). Both include a 12th-century anti-Jewish commentary by Berengaudus with illustrations reflecting his views. Medieval Jews are portrayed as evil while biblical Jews are shown welcoming Christ as a prophet. Other typical themes are the contrast between Church and Synagogue, rejection of the old Law, conversion of the Jews, etc. Written in England at a time of expulsions and pogroms, probably for a reforming bishop or high cleric, the Apocalpyse reflects the anti-Judaism of reform circles.
