Abstract:
Analyzes the survival function of Jewish humor. Asserts that this must be distinguished from antisemitic jokes which were current in the Wilhelmine period and were also told by West European Jews (such as Freud) against Jews from Eastern Europe; deplores the persistence of such jokes in present-day Germany. Discusses the legitimacy of satires on the Holocaust, such as Edgar Hilsenrath's "Der Nazi und der Friseur", and treatment in comics form such as Spiegelman's "Maus".
