Abstract:
Discusses the degree to which Lithuanians have accepted or continue to deny that Lithuanians took part in the murder of Jews during the Holocaust. Summarizing the history of Lithuanian-Jewish relations during that period, counters the myth that the Jews were disloyal to Lithuania and supporters of the Soviets. Such myths have prevented Lithuanians from facing the antisemitism not only of individual killers, but also of such pro-Nazi groups as the Lithuanian Activist Front. Recent developments in independent Lithuania include official apologies for Lithuanian participation in massacres of Jews, intellectual opposition to the antisemitic myths, the establishment of a commission whose purview includes the Nazi and Soviet occupations and, hence, Lithuanian crimes against Jews. However, not a single murderer of Jews has yet been punished by a Lithuanian court.
