Abstract:
Surveys and summarizes data contained in the newly available archives of Minsk regarding the intricate relations between Polish, Belorussian, and Jewish resistance groups active in Western Belorussia during World War II. Describes the complex relations between the Belorussian, Russian, and Polish resistance groups. Discusses their position towards the Jews in the area and towards Jewish fighters and partisans in their units. Neither the Poles nor the Belorussians focused on the rescue of Jews. Nevertheless, there were Belorussian partisans who were involved in rescue and resistance operations in relation to specific ghettos. The Belorussian groups admitted Jewish fighters more willingly and also cooperated with Jewish fighting units. The Polish resistance groups, including the Armia Krajowa, regarded the Jews as their traditional enemy and totally rejected them, especially on account of their involvement with the Belorussians whose political aspirations with regard to areas densely populated with Poles threatened Polish national aspirations.
