Abstract:
Presents documents (pp. 54-72) relating to the arrest of 15 Jews for speculation in Kolyshki (Belarus) in 1939. The introduction (pp. 48-54) notes that while the Soviet authorities officially denied the existence of antisemitism in the USSR, in internal documents (such as those presented here) they admitted that popular antisemitism did exist. The authorities attempted to "balance" antisemitism by pointing to such negative phenomena as Jewish nationalism. Two of the documents, items sent to a Yiddish newspaper, reflect the concern of local Jews about steps taken to suppress Jewish culture, which were understood as having antisemitic implications.
Note:
Five documents.
