Abstract:
Analyzes the history of the wave of anti-Jewish riots which spread from Neustettin (now Szczecinek) to other towns of the region in July-September 1881. Sees their source in the economic hardships caused by modernization and in antisemitic agitation by the "Norddeutsche Presse" and other newspapers, and by the radical antisemite Ernst Henrici who toured the region shortly before; a few days after he spoke in Neustettin, the synagogue burned down. Bismarck had exploited antisemitism in his recent election campaign, and the populace thought that the state backed antisemitic actions. In most of the localities, the mob, often stirred up for several days beforehand, broke windows of Jewish homes and shops; in some there was plundering, and in one case also bodily harm. Vigorous action by the authorities finally stopped the riots. However, bad feeling remained, and the authorities thereafter limited Jewish rights by administrative means in order to appease the antisemites.
