Abstract: Narratives about Alexander the Macedonian's life were extremely popular throughout the Middle Ages all over Europe and beyond. Crossing cultural boundaries, they were also adopted and adapted for a Jewish readership. In the latter context, the episode about the king's visit to Jerusalem served as a topos of interreligious encounter between the Jews and their non-Jewish rulers. It was first told by Flavius Josephus in the first century as a tale that sets idolatry in contrast with monotheism. Among other episodes, the text reports a dramatic encounter with the Jewish high priest. In medieval versions, Alexander suggests that the high priest erect a golden statue of himself in the sanctuary to honor God. The paper offers an in-depth analysis of this latter motif in different versions of the narrative against the background of medieval Jewish-Christian relations.

Abstract: Access to light and air, on the one hand, and the preservation of privacy, on the other, were highly sought after and frequently-contested commodities for both Jewish and Christian residents of increasingly crowded medieval towns. While the regulation of these rights according to Jewish law differed markedly from the approach of local German law, rabbinic responsa as well as archival materials demonstrate that Jews often embraced the legal practices of the majority when negotiating neighborly relations with both Christians and co-religionists. This article offers a close reading of such sources from the medieval German Empire, highlighting the knowledge and agency of both scholars and ordinary Jews, as well as the extent of their engagement with local legal culture.

Abstract: In the eighteenth century, Jewish-Christian polemics fueled a legal dualism among French officials, Jewish communities, and Christian Hebraists. Out of this friction emerged the Recueil des Loix, Coutumes, et Usages Observes par les Juifs de Metz, which illuminated Jewish laws for French judges unschooled in Hebrew and the regional Judeo-Allemande dialect. Metz officials’ request for the Recueil cheered Jewish leaders who hoped to enhance Christian interest in the community’s internal life, even as skeptical Metz Jews likely suspected intensified surveillance of their transactions both among themselves and with Christians. Still, in interpreting Jewish law, ancien regime courts did not uniformly promote antisemitism. On the contrary, as seen in the compilation of the Recueil, judges often explored Jewish law with genuine curiosity and sought to reconcile it with Christian ideals, even if some judges clung to a hope of converting Jews, for which purpose Jewish law needed to be understood.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to establish a series of links between some of the main religious formulas that arise in Judaism and Christianism and the romantic and confluent love characteristic of modern societies. To carry it out, firstly, we analyze love in historical Judaism, reflecting on the Ahavah formula, the predominant formula in this religious context. Secondly, to study the Christian drift of love, we first analyze how the emergence of this new religious faith (Christianism) provokes a change in the Jewish way of understanding it (love). Subsequently, we analyze some of the three main formulas in which love materializes in Christianism: Agape, Caritas, and Amor Sui. Regarding modern love, we first carry out a contextualization focused on the processes of secularization and individualization, and their impact on it. Afterwards, we present the main features that define both romantic and confluent love, and finally, we analyze the Judeo-Christian characters inherited for such types of love. The methodology used focused on a literature review and theoretical reflection based on this review. The research carried out allows us to establish sociological continuities between Judeo-Christian religious love and modern secular love in the terms used throughout the paper.

Abstract: »Sadness« and »grief« are usually considered emotions that are shared by all humans and are thus universal. However, the way »sadness« and »grief« are conceptualized, communicated, and expressed in culture differs greatly. As social emotions, they are strongly shaped by norms. This article analyses »sadness« and »grief« within a field of multiple tensions (Spannungsfeld). By referring to texts from the Hebrew Bible as well as the ancient Near East, »sadness« and »grief« are explored between action and emotion, collective and individual, male and female, spontaneous reaction and professional performance. I show that the public lamenting and crying of kings, the people, or professional mourners played an important role in social and political communication. Furthermore, this article analyzes the crucial role of »sadness« and »grief« in how prophetic texts anticipated the future, and it reflects on the consequences that mourning was regulated and partially prohibited in legislation texts.

Abstract: The article takes its departure point in two sets of contemporary studies: first, studies that establish the vital role of touch in the alleviation of pain among both human and non-human primates; second, studies that demonstrate the social and cultural constructions of touch. On this basis, the article investigates whether the Hebrew Bible, consistent in its attention to suffering, depicts touch as a way to relieve pain. It first reviews נגע and other roots implying bodily contact; then, it examines responses to a range of linguistic and bodily expressions of distress, including the root נחם, whose meaning is discussed. As a case study, the article analyzes the metaphor of breastfeeding developed in Isaiah 49, 60, and 66, alongside other intimate bodily contacts. These non-exhaustive inquiries indicate that the Hebrew Bible reflects little cultural attention to comforting touch but rather focuses on other responses to distress, such as sensory perception and assistance.

Abstract: A close examination of early twentieth-century literature written in Hebrew and Yiddish reveals that many of its first representations of Christianity put a central emphasis on Mary. This fact has been overlooked in previous scholarship fixated on the role of Jesus. Our article aims to fill this lacuna by focusing on Mary’s appearance in a short, controversial story published in 1909 by Sholem Asch. Through a close reading of Mary’s encounter with the matriarch Rachel, we define Asch’s ‘maternal model,’ an alternative paradigm for Jewish-Christian relations. We argue that the marginalization of Mary from the scholarly conversation is not a slipup. Rather, it is part of a gendered scheme that prioritized Jesus over his mother and narratives of persecution and victimhood over care and obligation. We show how Asch’s artfully constructed fictional formation offers a political position founded on empathy and interconnectivity.

Abstract: The fifth part of Rabbi Khalifa Ben-Malka's Kaf naki (Clean Hand), Meshovah niẓaḥat (Triumphant Response) portrays a series of interreligious disputations that he conducted with Christian colleagues in Agadir during the first half of the eighteenth century. A study of Meshovah niẓaḥat reveals that, while these debates represent a direct continuation of medieval interreligious polemic, occasionally the traditional arguments took on a new garb—for example, those proofs relying on the era's geographic or scientific discoveries. Ben-Malka was well-versed in the intricacies of theological debate and was familiar with the most sophisticated tools the medieval polemical tradition had to offer, as well as with post-medieval Jewish anti-Christian literature. His writing opens a window onto eighteenth-century Jewish-Moroccan intellectual history while simultaneously raising a number of questions. Further study will be necessary to paint a fuller and more diverse picture.

Abstract: This article reexamines the assumptions about the nature and agency of art that motivate anti-idol polemics in the Hebrew Bible. These verbal attacks, which characterize idols as inanimate objects incapable of speaking, seeing, smelling, and breathing, have long been studied in relation to ancient Near Eastern image theology. In an effort to extend and revise this earlier research, this article draws upon the work of social anthropologist A. Gell and his insights into the mechanisms by which images become endowed with and/or are stripped of human-like agency. In light of Gell's theory, it is possible to understand biblical anti-idol polemics as a type of assault on the social agency of idols in a manner closely akin to the physical vandalism inflicted upon divine and royal images in ancient Mesopotamia. In both cases, the part of the image that is deliberately targeted – whether by hammer and chisel or verbal polemic – are those external features (eyes, ears, nose, mouth) that were thought to manifest and activate the image's agency in the first place.

Abstract: Deuteronomy 23:3, says: “No … Moabite may enter the assembly of the Lord”. This verse is motivated by a discriminatory tendency embedded in the ontology of the Deuteronomist. Interestingly, Deuteronomy 23:3 was used by Ezra-Nehemiah to discriminate against the “Moabites” during the Second Temple. Such ontology is countered by the author of Ruth in the narrative of Ruth during the Second Temple. This demonstrates an ontological “war” within the Bible itself. The primary contestation lies in whether God is exclusive or inclusive. This development necessitates a hermeneutics of suspicion. In the course of history, the “theology” of Deuteronomy has been used to grossly violate the human dignity of many God-fearing African people and many other people of the South for colonial purposes. To exacerbate the situation, there were persistent attempts from some quarters to universalise such a discriminatory biblical perspective. This would feed into the centre–periphery arrangement, with the centre feeding the periphery with such hermeneutics. For this reason, African scholars are implored to be very vigilant against ardent pressures put on the biblical texts by ontological, epistemological, and contextual biases of interpretations. Accordingly, Andrew Mbuvi identifies African Biblical Hermeneutics perfectly when he says it seeks to undo “the very construct of the ‘centre-periphery’ binary by allowing the possibility of multiple centres”). Kenneth Ngwa, thus, rightly asserts that African Biblical Hermeneutics considers African epistemologies and conditions “to be invaluable and legitimate contexts and resources in biblical interpretation”), drinking from our own wells). In consequence, this paper intends to set a dialogue between Deuteronomy 23:3 and Ruth 4:18–22. This paper aims to examine the understanding of God behind these verses. This paper will then compare the two theologies with the African philosophical concept of God. Harnessing the African concept of Ubuntu, this paper will de-ideologise the two texts and thus will provide a recommendation concerning the two texts.

Abstract: This essay explores the fraught relationship between Martin Buber and Christian thought by critically analyzing and historically contextualizing his Two Types of Faith (1950). In this work Buber applies the distinction he puts forth between faith as relational trust (“faith in”) and faith as intellectual ascent to propositional truth (“faith that”) onto the early Israelite and Christian communities of faith. He also uses this distinction to criticize contemporary Protestant theology for continuing the Pauline notion of “faith that” rather than Jesus’s Jewish “faith in.” By examining the notion of faith developed by three central German Protestant theologians, Albrecht Ritschl, Wilhelm Herrmann, and Emil Brunner, this essay demonstrates that Buber’s claim cannot be squared with the main line of Protestant theology from 1870 onward to Buber’s own time and that the entire discussion in Two Types of Faith can be understood as situated within the Protestant discourse he was admonishing.

Abstract: The apologetics of pro-slavery, pro-segregation Christians in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries were identical to the methods of biblical interpretation used by Dispensationalist Christian Zionists today. The ideology's specific rules of ‘literal interpretation’ and ‘antecedent theology’ led both groups to similar conclusions about slavery and racial segregation, on the one hand, and Jewish privilege and Palestinian displacement, on the other. Abolitionist efforts to promote a Christ–like hermeneutic rooted in Christian morality points the way forward to correcting modern theologies, such as Dispensationalist Christian Zionism, that continue to sanction human oppression.

Abstract: Mother Earth is home to an unprecedented number of translations of the Bible, making it the most widely translated book in the world. The pages of this book have traversed a variety of physical and metaphorical borders, navigating diverse geographical, political, economic, cultural, linguistic, and religious intersections. Across space, time, and cultures, millions of readers have found various reasons to read it through diverse lenses. The Bible was frequently translated and brought to the colonized territories with colonial movements. Regrettably, it was often utilized as a tool for subjugation and dominance. However, the colonized people also used this resource for their own goals. Do contemporary biblical studies have the courage to look upon the tomes and tons of translated Bibles lying upon the surface of Mother Earth? What responsibilities and opportunities does the Global Translated Bible(s) lay upon academic biblical studies? What research questions, challenges, and opportunities for collaboration does it open? What are the pedagogical obligations and implications of acknowledging the Global Translated Bible(s)? In other words, what does faithfulness and unfaithfulness to the translated biblical corpus entail, imply, and demand? This lecture proposes and emphasizes the imperative of mainstreaming the Global Translated Bible(s) into academic biblical studies.

Abstract: In the personal credo that prefaces his Decem libri historiarum, Gregory of Tours states his belief in an Antichrist who would impose circumcision upon his subjects. While Gregory did not invent this theme of a circumcising Antichrist, it nevertheless closely mirrored his own eschatological anxieties. Physical circumcision was, for Gregory, an unmistakable indicator of Judaism and the Old Law. The Bishop of Tours was deeply concerned about the Jews of his own time, whose obstinate refusal to acknowledge Christian truth he perceived as an obstacle to his socio-religious ideal of a unified Christian society. While Gregory did not necessarily believe that the End Times would arrive during his own lifetime, he saw signa of its inevitability everywhere, and consequently encouraged readiness on the part of his contemporaries. The Antichrist’s imposition of compulsory circumcision thus implied for Gregory the culmination of an ongoing effort by Jews to inhibit Christian unity.

Abstract: According to the traditional perspective, the early Christians refused to continue with the temple sacrifice. Christ on the cross had already atoned for all sins. Recently, other scholars, especially those belonging to the Radical New Perspective on Paul (or “Paul within Judaism” research), have argued instead that Paul carried on with temple worship, considered it efficacious, and expected Christ-following Jews to continue with the sacrifice. In this research we will investigate the positions of the different perspectives on Paul’s attitude toward Jewish sacrifices and evaluate the arguments at stake. Our research leads us to the conclusion that Paul did not consider the temple sacrifices a problem, but neither did he give them any salvific relevance for the recipients of his letters.

Abstract: In view of persistently unresolved questions over whether the assorted segments of the Protevangelium of James can be read as a unified narrative, this study proposes a new account of the work’s complete thematic unity. Taking the Nativity as the Protevangelium’s overarching concern, I suggest that its narrative arises principally from the dramatic relationship between purity and divine indwelling characteristic of the Tabernacle narrative (Ex 25–40, Lev 1–16). As the Protevangelium begins to reach its final form during the second century CE, it becomes ordered around narrating the Christ Child as the locus of divine indwelling, a view which binds together the otherwise discordant opening chapters on Mary’s upbringing and closing chapters on Zechariah’s martyrdom. The Protevangelium invites its readers to consider how the God of Israel could indwell human conception and birth, while neither abolishing the Priestly law nor permitting his unapproachable Presence to suffer diminishment.

Abstract: In his 1934 book The Conflict of the Church and the Synagogue, James Parkes maintained that, despite the abundant hostility toward Jews by early Christian theologians, ancient Jewish-Christian social relations would have been excellent on the ground. Through careful analysis of both literary and material sources pertaining to the Jewish diaspora in Mediterranean late antiquity, this contribution demonstrates that social relations were more complicated than Parkes imagined. Literary texts like the Letter of Severus of Minorca on the Conversion of the Jews and the Ecclesiastical History of Sokrates of Constantinople are not reliable witnesses for historical reconstruction because their rhetorical formations of “useable pasts” where Jews and Christians had positive interactions were ideologically motivated by interests in blaming Jews for present hostilities. At the same time, however, inscriptions like those from Corykos in Cilicia, where Jews and Christians were buried in the same necropolis and shared a common set of names, might point toward instances of more amicable coexistence.

Abstract: Important facets of identity can be communicated through dress. Descriptions of dress and body adornment within the text of the Hebrew Bible can therefore be used as a narrative device to convey subtextual information about the wearer. By utilising archaeological research on the role that jewellery plays in age and gender differentiation alongside textual evidence, this article argues that נזם rings are worn by women and children of both genders to convey messages about their valuation, commodification and ownership in relation to a male patriarch. This has important implications for understanding the nuances within the biblical texts themselves and offers new perspectives and interpretative possibilities.

Abstract: This paper examines various ways in which apocalyptic studies can benefit from the introduction of the term and concept of gilayon, a reconstructed Hebrew counterpart of the Judeo-Greek apocalypse. The term gilayon, which combines the meanings of “revealed book” and “book of revelation,” refers to a central image of early Jewish revealed literature and could serve to define an important corpus, the boundaries of which might well overlap with (but still differ from) what is understood by the “genre apocalypse” in modern research. Moreover, this reconstructed concept uncovers additional meanings and associations, which shed light on texts known as “apocalyptic,” and has explanatory power for many phenomena associated with them. The introduction of gilayon may modify the entire paradigm of our understanding of early Jewish mysticism and help to divert the discussion of textual genres associated with it from a phenomenological to a historical route.

Abstract: While a finding of pig remains has often been regarded in Iron Age archaeological studies as an indication of the inhabitants’ identity, several recent zooarchaeological studies have shown that the archaeological record is more complex, and that pig remains cannot serve as an identity marker. The textual evidence analyzed in this paper supports this direction and suggests a multistage development process leading up to various expressions of the pig taboo in ancient Israelite belief. While in the Pentateuch pigs are mentioned alongside other impure animals and are not accorded excessive impurity amongst them, the textual sources indicate that pigs received a special status and became an identity marker only from the Greco-Roman period onwards. This paper also shows that during this period even the word “pig” became taboo in certain instances, as seen from three texts preserved in LXX of Samuel-Kings (1–4 Kingdoms) but missing from MT.

Abstract: In the second century CE, a learned pagan named Celsus wrote an extensive critique of Christianity. The critique achieved enough recognition that Origen wrote a response. This contribution explores how a pagan, a Jew, and a Christian who were all influenced by Platonism, interacted by exploring whether we can determine if Celsus knew the works of Philo via Origen’s Contra Celsum. It considers four lines of evidence: Celsus’s recognition of “the more reasonable” Jewish interpreters who rejected literal interpretations for allegorical readings, esp. Gen 2:21–22; the specific example of anthropomorphisms, especially Gen 2:2; the extent of the Jewish allegorical readings; and a shared understanding of the First Principle, especially the ineffability of God.

Abstract: The intersections of Jewish and Christian ritual practice begin with shared roots in Second Temple Judaism and continue to today. However, their different theologies and sacred narratives and tendencies to define themselves in opposition to one another resulted in practices with minimal overlap. Nevertheless, as a minority community, Jews in Christian lands were greatly influenced by the aesthetics of Christian practices, and especially in recent centuries, deliberately imitated them. Israeli culture, though, has caused a resurgence of specifically Jewish expressions, and created a country where Jews are the majority culture. The radical post-Holocaust changes to Christian thinking about Jews have also led some Christians deliberately to imitate and integrate Jewish ritual practices.

Abstract: Much of the Hebrew Bible is about ritual and practice. The Jews were told to follow very different rules and regulations from the other communities who lived around them. It is not at all clear what these rituals are for, although they sometimes seem just to be important as a mark of distinction between the people of Israel and the rest. This established something of a theme in the Bible of disobedience, an occasional return to compliance, and much discussion of the imperfections of humanity. The text provides us with intriguing ideas about why we do what we do, how far we should obey what we are told to do, and what the consequences of not performing adequately might be.

Abstract: Water is a master metaphor in literature, appearing in many writings around the world. In some cases, water is stormy, vicious and destructive; in others, water is calm, steady and enriching; in yet other cases, water is reachable, manageable, and replenishable. In this essay, I will examine the different meanings of ‘a well of water’ by comparing Jacob’s well in the Gospel of St John and the Jing (‘The Well’, #48) hexagram in the I Ching or Book of Changes. In this comparison, my goal is to show that while ‘a well of water’ has a universal appeal as a symbol of finding ‘a living spring’ in one’s spirit, it has different connotations and implications in different cultural systems. In these two renditions of ‘a well of water’, we find authors providing different answers to the fundamental questions of human existence and the meaning of life-long learning.

Abstract: Readers wrestle with the story of the two bears who maul forty-two lads taunting Elisha in 2 Kings 2:23–24. Little attention is given to the fact that bears are now extinct in Israel. This article reconsiders the passage and biblical bears in dialogue with a subgenre of animal studies known as “extinction studies.” Extinction studies in the humanities focus on “multispecies stories” about extinction over time. Using extinction studies to reexamine references to bears in the Hebrew Bible reveals ways in which the representation of bears as a dangerous threat to humans and livestock, in both biblical texts (including David’s story) and their interpretation, may contribute to the mistreatment and extinction of actual bears. Yet God is associated with bears and other wild animals in several biblical texts, including 2 Kings 2. Thus, a rereading of biblical bears also leads to reconsideration of the biblical God’s variable relationship to wildness.

Abstract: Marilynne Robinson is one of the most influential Christian writers and public intellectuals alive today, and her views on a range of topics should be taken seriously. In her 2015 essay entitled ‘Memory’, she argues that the ‘liberal side’ of American Christianity has retreated from scriptural theology under pressure from academic biblical criticism. Her dismissal of Hebrew Bible scholarship is centred on two primary and interrelated ideas. First is the idea that Israelite religion was embedded in a broader context of Ancient Near East (ANE) religious cultures, such that biblical stories and characters sometimes borrow from other ancient sources. Second is the problem that the scholarly understanding of ancient Israelite polytheism threatens to make God into a ‘pagan amalgam’. The interrelated problem, that is, is the uniqueness and transcendence of the Hebrew Bible, and the God who is its main character. In this article, I review the scholarship on ancient Israelite religion and Robinson’s complaints about it. I argue that Robinson treats the critical scholarship only at a distance, allusively, (mis)representing it and sometimes (mis)understanding it in superficial ways, but that her theological anxiety is warranted.

Abstract: Written in an agricultural context oriented around life and work with domesticated animals, the Bible’s texts, from Genesis 1 onward, endorse a picture of human destiny to farm the land and dominate other living beings. In doing so, the Bible contrasts with the cosmologies of low-domesticating indigenous cultures in privileging domesticating and domestication-like modes of relationship between sentient beings. This is not limited to the Bible’s picture of inter-species human relationships. Rather the paradigm of human domination of other beings is analogous to domestication-like relationships between genders, ethnicities and others that are naturalized in subsequent Biblical and post-Biblical texts. We even see a reflection of domesticating assumptions in the picture, across both Testaments of the Christian Bible, of God as a domesticator-like figure and God’s people as a flock that God protects and requires obedience and sacrifice from.

Abstract: How might kinship help us think about animals in the Bible, and, conversely, how can the Bible help us think about animal kinship? I propose that the concept of kinship can help us take next steps in Animal Studies in the Bible. After defining kinship and reviewing work on human-animal studies, I turn to animal-animal kinship, the “mutuality of being” that animals share not with humans but with each other. I focus on the four “animal family” laws of the Pentateuch and the so-called humanitarian rationale that has dominated interpretation of them. Pointing to problems with that rationale, I turn to rabbinic reception of these laws in the Mishnah, which, I argue, takes a very different approach that deserves our attention. I close with scientific and source critical perspectives, along with reflection on the real-life stakes of attending to the Bible’s animal families.

Abstract: This essay is a response to the stimulating contributions to this volume, by way of hearing. Here, I use the Indigenous Pasifika form of interrogation known as talanoa that allows us to hear and enter into the subconcious state, to perceive the world of animals from these alternative perspectives, which seek to liberate animal voices and push back at colonial systems that are guilty of meddling with our reading and theorizing of the animal-Other. This talanoa allows us to imagine the contributors sitting around a kava bowl in conversation, as we hear them tell their stories, and hear the humour, the pain, the honesty in the animal experiences.

Abstract: The rise of the Internet and social media has enabled Jewish teachings to travel far beyond the boundaries of established Jewish communities. New channels for Torah study online have connected rabbis in Israel to non-Jews around the world who are searching for rabbinic mentorship. Tens of thousands of individuals coming from Hebrew Roots Christianity, Seventh-Day Adventism, and Messianic Judaism have converged with Orthodox rabbinic authorities through online platforms, where they negotiate theological questions and their own place within a messianic Zionist vision. In turn, Orthodox rabbis from Israel’s religious right wing are engaging in a new form of Internet proselytizing, offering non-Jews who feel lost in the boundary zone between Christianity and Judaism a concrete solution: they are invited to become Bnei Noah, the Children of Noah, a new Judaic faith and a harbinger of messianic times.

Abstract: The Boundaries of the Land of Israel is a late thirteenth-century guidebook that describes several itineraries in the Holy Land. Critics have lauded it as the culmination of late medieval Jewish travel literature, and have noted its sophistication in bringing unusual exegetical depths to the descriptions of holy sites. While questions of its exact dating and authorship have long been debated, its intellectual and literary provenance has been largely taken for granted. Mostly, scholars have overlooked the polemical ambition that underlies the way the author chose to expound upon the Holy Land. Drawing on bellicose messianic traditions that originated with the founders of the Jewish community in Frankish Acre, this treatise, I argue, sought to show how the Land itself makes manifest the meaning of Scripture. Consequently, the Land of Israel is seen not only to reject the rule of Muslims and Christians, but also to disprove their respective interpretive traditions.

Abstract: This chapter introduces the theme of the volume and the contributions it seeks to make to the study of ancient travel. Such contributions are twofold. First, this volume is the first to include early Islamic travel within the comparative study of travel in antiquity. Second, our focus on experiential aspects of ancient journeying break new ground in demonstrating the variety of experiences travelling may evoke and in leading the way in the application of new methods in the study of ancient travel. This introduction ends with suggestions for future research, for which the articles collected here set the stage.

Abstract: The storms threatening ancient sea-travelers were traditionally supposed to be a sign of divine displeasure. The marine voyage with its tempests, famously featuring in the Jonah story, also became a well-known topos in Greco-Roman storytelling. This essay investigates how some Jewish and Christian narrators reworked that topos in light of their particular religious agendas. Their tales thus turn out to be hybrid creatures composed of both biblical and mythological patterns of narration. Several such mythological patterns can be discerned in late antique sea travelogues, including divine intervention calming a stormy tempest; wondrous birds coming to sailors’ rescue; and treasure hidden in the depth of the sea, guarded by a monstrous creature. Our study focuses on the final motif, with the texts under discussion mostly originating in the Syro-Mesopotamian Aramaic-speaking cultural sphere-Jewish rabbinic and Syriac Christian milieus. For all our narrators, the sea maintained its perilous appeal and the voyages provided a meaningful liminal experience that challenged their religious outlook. We outline a variety of strategies in dealing with the tension inherent in the sea adventure, some of them tailored to temper the mythic tenor of the background tradition.

Abstract: This article reassesses the expression of jealousy and envy in the Hebrew Bible as well as their ethical status. Through a systematic analysis of the Hebrew root קנא I, argue that קנאה arises exclusively in scenarios involving a relative loss in status to a rival and that its closest English counterparts are therefore envy and jealousy. While some sort of link between קנאה and envy/jealousy is widely acknowledged, communis opinio has it that קנאה in the Bible regularly refers to other emotions and states, from anger and fury, to devotion and love, to vaguer feelings of passion, emotional excitement, zeal, or the desire for vengeance. Likewise, קנאה is widely considered to be ethically neutral—an emotion that might be positive or negative, good or bad. I challenge these views through new readings of several passages (esp. Song 8:6, Prov 14:30, Num 11:29, 2 Sam 21:1–2) and close with a brief discussion of the significance of these findings for biblical theology, religious zealotry, and the lexical expression of jealousy in cultures that evolved in contact with the Hebrew Bible and its translations.

Abstract: This article is an experiment with irresolution as methodology in historical re-presentation. The focus is identity irresolution in Timnah, an Iron Age site in the Shephelah of the southern Levant. In biblical narrative, Timnah is brought to life in the stories of an unnamed woman in Judg 14–15. In archaeology, the site has been identified with Tel Batash (Tell el-Batashi in Arabic). The purpose of this article is twofold: to write a counterhistory of the unnamed woman that emphasizes the mystery of her identity and to articulate how irresolution can expand the scope of the historical practice in biblical studies. After an introduction and a discussion of irresolution as methodology, I offer a deep reading and re-presentation of the textual evidence, followed by an examination of the archaeological interpretations at Tel Batash. I conclude by considering the ethics of history writing in biblical studies.

Abstract: Citing other texts or alluding to them, authors deliberately opt to rely on the readiness and ability of their readers to cooperate in the production of meaning. Hence it is only natural to reckon with the possibility that a given author would mark citations and allusions in such a way as to enable readers to realize the intended reference more easily. While the marking of textual references is well-investigated in comparative literature, with regard to the Hebrew Bible it has remained largely unexplored. Therefore, this article offers a theoretical introduction illustrated by examples. In so doing, it views matters from the perspective of both production and reception, thus taking into account the decisive role of what has been dubbed above the “cooperation” of the reader. In the end, this integrative approach will also allow for a more nuanced functional classification of citations, allusions, and cognate phenomena.

Abstract: This paper argues for a new understanding of the Qur’an’s view of Jews and Christians based, firstly, on their developing role in Qur’anic discourse, and, secondly, on the Qur’an’s continuous understanding of the three designations for Jews and Christians: banū isrāʾīl, “the children of Israel,” ahl al-kitāb, “the Scripture People,” and al-yahūd wa-l-naṣārā, “the Jews and the Christians.” Whereas there is a scholarly consensus that the term ahl al-kitāb designates both Jews and Christians, I offer two correctives: first, the term banū isrāʾīl equally designates the Qur’an’s Jewish and Christian contemporaries (or, more often, their common ancestors), and, second, the predominantly collective usage of al-yahūd wa-l-naṣārā shows that the three designations for Jews and Christians most be understood both in their continuity and in the increasing internal differentiation of Jews and Christians from each other.

Abstract: Disability has often been conflated with adjacent and overlapping topoi in the reception and scholarship of the Hebrew Bible in ways that have compounded ableist tendencies in some texts and manufactured them outright in others. The point is demonstrated here through various meanings of the couplet "they have eyes but do not see; they have ears but do not hear," which in context can convey several reasons why seeing and hearing do not happen: unwillingness to accept a message (Jer 5:21, Ezek 12:2) and inanimacy (Pss 115:5b–6a, 135:16b–17a) in addition to the disabilities of blindness and deafness (Isa 43:8). Disability plays no conceptual or rhetorical role in the first four passages, as Hebrew biblical texts generally avoid the pitfall of equating disability with rebelliousness or lifelessness. Isaiah 43:8 uses blindness and deafness as metaphors for the condition of the exiled Judeans, but a careful reading in the context of Second Isaiah reveals that they serve as metaphors for captivity, not obduracy or immorality. Appreciating these distinctions produces more historically plausible readings of the five passages and opens the way to less ableist interpretations of other disability texts in the Hebrew Bible.

Abstract: Several early rabbinic sources list verses that contain potential divine names. These names are classified as sacred when they refer to the Jewish God, and as not sacred when they refer to other entities, such as false gods or angels. This article argues that the core of the list was based on ancient Second Temple traditions that were modified. These changes were motivated by developments within Jewish thought and the shifting of conceptions and beliefs. Some of these changes were the result of internal rabbinic developments and others were the sages' ambition to define the boundaries of Judaism, which sometimes carried a polemical response to Christian commentaries. This article proposes that analysis of these lists and the relationship between them can serve as an example for rabbinic attempts to reframe, rather than erase, their literary inheritance.

Abstract: Interfaith controversies and disputes regarding the role of reason in interpreting the Scriptures characterised scholarly discussion in the Low Countries between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The Jewish author Abraham Gómez Silveira contributed to this discussion with an eclectic body of literature. This article focuses on his Libro Mudo (Mute Book), which embodies his efforts to present the Jewish religion as the only rational one and the Christian dogma as irrational. In order to corroborate his reading, Silveira mostly bases his argumentation on non-Jewish texts. By selecting passages from the New Testaments, Christian religious commentaries as well as Qur'anic excerpts, Silveira aims to demonstrate that even non-Jewish sources prove the rationality of the Jewish theological system. The novelty of Silveira's approach consists in confuting Christian dogma by accepting the Gospels as reliable historical sources. In this argumentative structure, the Qur'an has a similar although not identical function.
