Abstract:
The intersections of Jewish and Christian ritual practice begin with shared roots in Second Temple Judaism and continue to today. However, their different theologies and sacred narratives and tendencies to define themselves in opposition to one another resulted in practices with minimal overlap. Nevertheless, as a minority community, Jews in Christian lands were greatly influenced by the aesthetics of Christian practices, and especially in recent centuries, deliberately imitated them. Israeli culture, though, has caused a resurgence of specifically Jewish expressions, and created a country where Jews are the majority culture. The radical post-Holocaust changes to Christian thinking about Jews have also led some Christians deliberately to imitate and integrate Jewish ritual practices.
