Abstract:
First presented as a paper at the 38th annual conference of the Association for Jewish Studies, San Diego, CA, December 2006.
Abstract:
In the mid-1960s many Christian clergymen, scholars, and theologians where disturbed by the inability of the Church to learn a basic lesson from the Holocaust; namely, that it is not acceptable to stand idly by during the degradation of your neighbor. In order to address this and other related issues, two American Protestant clergymen-professors, Franklin H. Littel and Hubert G. Locke, convened a Scholars Conference on the "Holocaust and Church Struggle" in 1970 at Wayne State University in Detroit. From 1970-2005, Annual Scholar Conferences on the Holocaust and the Churches were held in various places in the USA. Presents a brief chronicle of the last eleven such conferences, held in 1995-2005.
