Abstract:
Re-defines racism broadly as ideas and practices which express hostility towards population groups as such, with these groups being delimited arbitarily by the perpetrator. In these terms, antisemitism can be regarded as a variety of racism. Finds some justification in claims of a new antisemitism, since antisemitism has changed just as racism has. The changes have been brought about by the establishment of the State of Israel, the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the changes in the status of Jews worldwide that Israel has affected. Each conflict produces racist attitudes, and does the Middle Eastern conflict, producing both Israeli racism toward Palestinians and Arab antisemitism. Responses to Israeli policies may condition antisemitic views not only among Palestinians, but also within those sectors of their global supporters who see the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in terms of a group conflict between Jews and Arabs or Muslims. Calls for a study of the new antisemitism that would couple it with a study of anti-Palestinian racism.
