Abstract:
Much of the Hebrew Bible is about ritual and practice. The Jews were told to follow very different rules and regulations from the other communities who lived around them. It is not at all clear what these rituals are for, although they sometimes seem just to be important as a mark of distinction between the people of Israel and the rest. This established something of a theme in the Bible of disobedience, an occasional return to compliance, and much discussion of the imperfections of humanity. The text provides us with intriguing ideas about why we do what we do, how far we should obey what we are told to do, and what the consequences of not performing adequately might be.
