Abstract:
Probes the intentionalists' (e.g. L. Dawidowicz, E. Jäckel, S. Friedländer) and functionalists' ( e.g. U.D. Adam, W.J. Mommsen, M. Broszat) exposition of the Final Solution's implementation in light of the fate of Tunisian Jewry under Nazi occupation, November 1942-May 1943. Nazi-occupied Tunisia was controlled by the Wehrmacht, which had to coordinate its actions with Germany's allies and supporters, Italy and Spain, both of which had nationals amongst the Jews of Tunisia. Tunisia's Jews were subjected to discriminatory legislation and slave labor, but did not suffer from systematic persecution and extermination. Contends that the case of Tunisia refutes intentionalist arguments and supports, in general, the functionalist exposition of the Final Solution. Study of Tunisia's Jewry during the Nazi occupation also clarifies the fate of Jews in the European satellites of Nazi Germany (e.g. Romania, Italy, Bulgaria), which were able, at least partly, to protect their Jews.
