Abstract:
Discusses the role of Jews in the Greek resistance group Ethnikos Laikos Apeleftherotikos Stratos (ELAS, National Popular Liberation Army) on the island of Euboea (Evvia) in 1943-44. Relates the activities of Sara Yehoshua Fortis (b. 1928), who led a group of 12 Jewish women. In 1943 many Jews fled from Athens to Euboea, and some joined the resistance. Notes that these Jews managed to escape thanks to their political connections; ca. 1,000 of them were then helped by the underground to go on to Turkey and Palestine. Files in the U.S. Office of Strategic Services (OSS) show that American and British forces occasionally helped Jewish refugees flee from Euboea to Turkey. States, however, they could have done much more.
