Abstract:
Describes the SchuMa - the Schutzmannschaften - which were auxiliary police units of local collaborators, constituted by the Nazis as part of the German police responsible for public order in the civil administration in the Nazi-occupied territories of the USSR. Many of the recruits were ardent antisemites and anti-Soviets. They were employed by the Nazis in the majority of the mass murders of Jews and of communists. Deals with the Nazi administrative acts related to the constitution of the SchuMa, the conditions of service of the auxiliary police forces, their structure, and their relation to the German police forces, as well as the acts in which they were involved.
