Abstract:
Describes organized efforts to rescue Jewish children in Budapest between October 1944-January 1945, involving the Zionist youth movements, the Vaad Ezra ve-Hatzala, the Jewish Council, and "neutrals" such as Swedish and Swiss diplomats and the ICRC. 32 protected houses for children were established in which ca. 6,000 young Jews found refuge. Relates the difficult conditions of their existence, the hunger and cold, and the sporadic violent raids by the Arrow Cross, in which the children were terrorized and some were murdered. Altogether, between 5,000-6,000 children were rescued.
