Kurzfassung:
Analyzes the "ideal of tolerance" toward the Jews, especially in Castile. Contends that Christian-Jewish relations were based on discrimination and defenselessness. Earlier in the medieval period, as a result of economic requirements, Jews were treated with leniency. However, in the 14th and 15th centuries restrictions were put into practice. The defenselessness of the Jews vis-à-vis both the monarchy and the people was blatant. Nationalist fervor led to forced conversions of Jews, but that caused the rise of a racial prejudice which was linked to religious prejudices, which then focused on suspicions of heresy. This "modern" antisemitism finally led to the Inquisition tribunals for Crypto-Jews and to expulsions of Jews. Emphasizes that one should not believe in the myth of a golden age of coexistence between the Christians and Jews in Spain.
