Abstract:
Argues against two opposing tendencies in the interpretation of Wittgenstein's identity: either to declare him a Jewish thinker, or to associate him with antisemitism. Dismisses the view that Wittgenstein was a self-hating Jew. While he identified himself as a Jew, he understood his national identity in accordance with perceptions prevalent in the culture of his time (1920s-30s), i.e. in racial terms. Discussing a passage in his writings in which he compares the Jews to a tumor on the body of other nations, notes that the philosopher deals here with an image of the Jews presented in the culture of that time. He approaches this image with a warning: we must abandon the view of the nation as a living organism and notions such as "national character" or "national thinking."
