Abstract:
Discusses the work of Research Services, a Jewish organization for monitoring antisemitism which was established in Melbourne under the aegis of the Victorian Jewish Board of Deputies in December 1959 and was active until 1976. The main forms of its work were reporting on incidents (of which there were very few during the "golden age" of 1960-67), gathering information on the activities of antisemitic groups, keeping watch on migrant organizations, and sometimes also taking defensive action. Research Services adopted a hostile position toward the Jewish Council to Combat Fascism and Antisemitism, regarding it as a leftist organization unable to establish a working relationship with the security forces. In the early 1970s, its focus of attention shifted from neo-Nazism to Arab groups and individuals. In the mid-1970s the VJBD felt some uneasiness concerning Research Services' activities, accusing it of being amateurish and failing to establish good public relations. The VJBD decided to change its tactics of withstanding antisemitism, which was on the rise in Australia at the time, and terminated its funding of Research Services.
