Abstract:
Summarizes two surveys which were carried out in the United States, in the format of content analysis of Protestant and Catholic textbooks and teachers' guides published since the 1930s. The Protestant study was undertaken over a seven-year period at Yale University Divinity School by Bernhard Olson, and published in book form as "Faith and Prejudice; Intergroup Problems in Protestant Curricula" (1963). The Catholic study was carried out at St. Louis University under the supervision of Trafford Maher, and summarized in book form by John Pawlikowski in "Catechetics and Prejudice; How Catholic Teaching Materials View Jews, Protestants, and Racial Minorities" (1973). Banki voices concern that certain Christian teachings and preaching about Jews and Judaism have represented one of the deep-seated and enduring sources of antisemitism in this century.
