    Abstract: "The true story of a vigilante group of Holocaust survivors who conspired to kill six million Germans, Nakam (Hebrew for "vengeance") tells the story of "the Avengers" (Nokmim), a group of young Holocaust survivors led by poet and resistance fighter Abba Kovner, who undertook a mission of revenge against Germany following the crimes of the Holocaust. Motivated by both the atrocities they had endured and the realization that murderous antisemitic attacks on survivors continued long after the Nazi surrender, these fifty young men and women sought retaliation at a level commensurate with the devastation caused by the Holocaust, making clear to the world that Jewish blood would no longer be shed with impunity. Had they been successful, they would have poisoned city water supplies and loaves of bread distributed to German POWs, with the aim of killing six million Germans. Kovner and his followers went to great lengths to carry out their plans, going so far as to obtain the plans for Nuremberg's municipal water system, secure large quantities of poison, infiltrate a POW camp and the bakery that supplied it, and distribute poisoned bread to prisoners - but their plots were ultimately stymied. Most of the members of Nakam eventually returned to Israel, where for decades many of them refused to speak publicly about their roles in the group. While the Avengers' story began to come to light in the 1980s, details of the relations between the group and Zionist leadership and the motivations of its members have remained unknown. Drawing on rich archival sources and in-depth interviews with the Avengers in their later years, historian Dina Porat examines the formation of the group and the clash between the formative humanistic values held by its members and their unrealized plans for violent retribution"--

    Abstract: "Holocaust accounts typically cast Jewish victims as meek, going "like sheep to the slaughter." Given such portrayals, people ask, "Why didn't Jews resist?" But Jews did resist, staging armed uprisings in ghettos and camps throughout Nazi-occupied Europe. This book's goal is not to dispel the myth of Jewish passivity, however; instead, it argues that Jewish resistance deserves explanation. Research on social movements shows that protest occurs when protesters have an opportunity for action and both the material resources and belief in themselves to get their protest off the ground, but members of Jewish resistance movements lacked these factors. So why did they fight back? Using methods of comparative-historical sociology, the book answers this question by comparing three Jewish ghettos during World War II: Warsaw (site of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943), Vilna (where activists planned for armed resistance in the ghetto but could not achieve that goal), and Lodz (where no plans for armed resistance emerged). It finds that resistance rested on Jews' assessments of the threats facing them, and especially on their hope for survival. Somewhat ironically, armed resistance took place only once activists reached the critical conclusion that they had no hope for survival and saw such resistance as the best response to their situation. These findings have implications for other examples of resistance under extreme conditions, such as prison riots and rebellions of enslaved people"--

    Abstract: "In 1918, as Europe's continental empires were violently replaced with a patchwork of nominally post-imperial nation-states, elites in Poland drew on the global language of civilization to launch a state-building mission in the non-ethnically Polish, nationally contested, and war-torn region of Volhynia. By following eastward in the footsteps of border guards, military settlers, provincial administrators, regional activists, health professionals, urban planners, teachers, and academics, the work traces how a colorful cast of characters adapted the prevailing language of European imperialism while simultaneously rejecting the very idea that they could act imperialistically in an historically Polish borderland. Their tension-ridden approaches were never static. Some Polish nationalists declared that they alone could act as benign civilizational conduits in mainly Ukrainian villages and predominantly Jewish towns, while others attempted to craft a regional identity. But by the eve of the Second World War, the province had become a testing ground for visions of demographic transformation that favoured antisemitic schemes of Jewish emigration and the forced assimilation of non-Polish Slavs. Throughout, doubts about the national strength of local Poles, competitions between diverse groups of self-declared civilizers, and mounting anxieties about the rise of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, meant that Volhynia served as an arena for redefining the precise contours of the modern Polish nation. Rather than simply a successor state embroiled in the quintessentially east European problem of "national minorities," Poland was a place where people engaged with the concept of civilization, recasting its meaning in conceptual spaces between empire and nation-state"--

    Abstract: "The Sephardim in the Holocaust: A Forgotten People embraces the Sephardim of all the countries shattered by the Holocaust and pays tribute to the memory of the more than 160,000 Sephardim who perished. Isaac Jack Lévy and Rosemary Lévy Zumwalt draw on a wealth of archival sources, family history (Isaac and his family were expelled from Rhodes in 1938), and more than one hundred fifty interviews conducted with survivors during research trips to Belgium, Canada, France, Greece, Israel, Mexico, the Netherlands, the former Yugoslavia, and the United States. Lévy follows the Sephardim from Athens, Corfu, Cos, Macedonia, Rhodes, Salonika, and the former Yugoslavia to Auschwitz. The authors chronicle the interminable cruelty of the camps, from the initial selections to the grisly work of the Sonderkommandos inside the crematoria, detailing the distinctive challenges the Sephardim faced, with their differences in language, physical appearance, and pronunciation of Hebrew, all of which set them apart from the Ashkenazim. They document courageous Sephardic revolts, especially those by Greek Jews, which involved intricate planning, sequestering of gunpowder, and complex coordination and communication between Ashkenazi and Sephardic inmates-all done in the strictest of secrecy. And they follow a number of Sephardic survivors who took refuge in Albania with the benevolent assistance of Muslims and Christians who opened their doors to give sanctuary, and traces the fate of the approximately 430,000 Jews from Morocco, Algiers, Tunisia, and Libya from 1939 through the end of the war. The author's intention is to include the Sephardim in the shared tragedy with the Ashkenazim and others. The result is a much needed, accessible, and viscerally moving account of the Sephardim's unique experience of the Holocaust"--

    Abstract: Sorgfältige wissenschaftliche Edition des sog. "Lili Jacob-Albums", das die zur Vernichtung der ungarischen Juden organisierten Abläufe in Auschwitz-Birkenau fotografisch dokumentiert. Im Auftrag der Lagerleitung wurde das Album erstellt, um die Effizienz der NS-Tötungsmaschinerie zu belegen. Rezension (ekz): In Auftrag gab es die KZ-Lagerleitung, um die Effizienz der NS-Tötungsmaschinerie zu belegen, und genau das tut das sogenannte "Lili Jacob-Album" auch heute noch. Schonungslos macht es die Abläufe sichtbar, die in Auschwitz zur Selektion und Auslöschung der aus Ungarn deportierten Juden organisiert waren. Lili Jacob, die das Album aufbewahrt hat, übergab es 1980 der Gedenkstätte Yad Vashem, die es 2002 erstmals publizierte (deutsch u.d.T.: "Das Auschwitz-Album", 2016). Nun liegt es neu in einer sorgfältigen wissenschaftlichen Edition vor. Die einschlägig ausgewiesenen Historiker beleuchten das Vernichtungsprogramm gegen die ungarischen Juden, spüren den Biografien Lili Jacobs und der beiden SS-Fotografen nach, und vor allem blicken sie mit akribischer Detailschärfe auf die Fotos, die, meist im Kleinformat, erstmals richtig gereiht und vollständig abgedruckt sind. Sie untersuchen Bildsprache und -themen, identifizieren, soweit möglich, dargestellte Personen, stellen Bezüge zwischen den Fotos her und rekonstruieren die Bildserien.     Abstract: Auf der Suche nach einem sicheren Hafen kreuzen Schiffe mit Geflüchteten an Bord über Flüsse und Meere. 32 Staaten beraten zehn Tage lang über die Aufnahme von Verfolgten - doch sie handeln nicht, am Ende gibt es nur Lippenbekenntnisse. Kein Staat will ihnen Zuflucht gewähren. Nach dem "Anschluss" Österreichs im März 1938 nahm die Verfolgung von Jüdinnen und Juden im Deutschen Reich immer mehr zu. Für viele war der einzige Ausweg die Flucht. Doch wohin? US-Präsident Franklin D. Roosevelt lud zu einer internationalen Konferenz ein, die im Juli 1938 in Evian am Genfer See stattfand. Es wurde debattiert, diniert und um Einwanderungsquoten gefeilscht. Am Ende erklärte sich kein Staat bereit, seine Grenzen für die Verfolgten zu öffnen. Durch die Novemberpogrome verschärfte sich ihre Lage dramatisch. Im Mai 1939 legte die St. Louis in Hamburg mit 937 Kindern, Frauen und Männern an Bord Richtung Kuba ab. Den Hafen von Havanna in Sichtweite wurde der St. Louis die Einfahrt verweigert. Auch die USA und Kanada lehnten die Aufnahme ab. Nach tagelangen Verhandlungen musste das Schiff beidrehen und zurück nach Europa fahren - einem ungewissen Schicksal entgegen.

    Abstract: This book provides the first dedicated study of the Evian Conference of July 1938, an international initiative called by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. While on the surface the conference appeared as an attempt to alleviate the distress faced by Jews being forced out of Germany and Austria, in reality it only served to demonstrate that the nations of the world were not willing to accept Jews as refugees. Since the Holocaust, a generally-held assumption has been that the Evian Conference represented a lost opportunity to save Germany’s Jews, and that the conference failed to rescue the Jews of Europe. In this study, Paul Bartrop argues that in fact it did not fail when measured against the original reasons for which it was called. Exposing many of the myths surrounding the meeting, this work addresses a glaring lacuna in the literature of the Holocaust, and places the so-called 'failure' of the Evian Conference into its proper context.

    Abstract: Created and developed by the Ptolemaic kings, the Library of Alexandria was regarded as the world’s main center of scholarship from the 3rd century BC until at least the reign of Cleopatra (48–30 BC). The dream to establish a gigantic library that could assemble all known texts of the Hellenistic period, the outstanding achievements of the scholars who worked inside its walls, and, finally, the mysteries surrounding its disappearance, have bestowed an almost mythic status on this monumental library. Where was the Royal Library exactly located? What kind of texts were kept in that library? To what extent did the Library of Alexandria become a meeting point for different languages and cultures? Should we distinguish between the Museum and the Library from an institutional point of view? Were the book collections housed in separate buildings? What caused the destruction of those collections and how much was lost? Why do some ancient authors remain silent about the Library’s disappearance? Polis—The Jerusalem Institute of Languages and Humanities held an international conference to seek answers to these question. The 2015 conference on the Library of Alexandria gathered historians, archaeologists, and linguists, as well as specialists on the Septuagint and on Greek literature.     Abstract: Die Neurochirurgie hat sich vor gut 100 Jahren aus der Chirurgie und der Neurologie entwickelt. Als 1933 die Nationalsozialisten in Deutschland die Schlüsselstellen der Macht übernahmen, begann das Spezialgebiet gerade erst, sich als eigenständiges Fach zu etablieren. Von 69 damals hirnchirurgisch tätigen Ärzten wurden 13 aus rassistischen Gründen verfolgt. Zu ihnen zählten einige der erfahrensten deutschen Neurochirurgen. Fast alle flohen aus ihrer Heimat und kehrten nicht wieder zurück. Die Lücken, die sie hinterließen, wurden nie benannt. In der Emigration gelang es nur den jüngsten von ihnen, in der Neurochirurgie wieder Fuß zu fassen. Dieses Buch widmet sich den wissenschaftlichen Verdiensten der Vertriebenen und zeichnet ihre Biografien und Emigrationswege nach.

    Abstract: Despite some pioneering work by scholars, historians still find it hard to listen to the voices of women in the Holocaust. Learning more about the women who both survived and did not survive the Nazi genocide - through the testimony of the women themselves - not only increases our understanding of this terrible period in history, but makes us rethink our relationship to the gendered nature of knowledge itself. Women in the Holocaust is about the ways in which socially- and culturally-constructed gender roles were placed under extreme pressure; yet also about the fact that gender continued to operate as an important arbiter of experience. Indeed, paradoxically enough, the extreme conditions of the Holocaust - even of the death camps - may have reinforced the importance of gender. Whilst Jewish men and women were both sentenced to death, gender nevertheless operated as a crucial signifier for survival. Pregnant women as well as women accompanied by young children or those deemed incapable of hard labour were sent straight to the gas chambers. The very qualities which made them women were manipulated and exploited by the Nazis as a source of dehumanization. Moreover, women were less likely to survive the camps even if they were not selected for death. Gender in the Holocaust therefore became a matter of life and death.

    Abstract: "In the last two decades a large amount of previously secret documents on Jewish issues emerged from the newly opened Communist archives. The selection of these papers published in the volume and stemming mostly from Hungarian archives will shed light on a period of Jewish history that is largely ignored because much of the current scholarship treats the Shoah as the end of Jewish history in the region. The documents introduced and commented by the editor of the volume, András Kovács, will give insight into the conditions and constraints under which the Jewish communities, first of all, the largest Jewish community of the region, the Hungarian one, had to survive in the time of the post-Stalinist Communist dictatorship. They may shed light on the ways that 'Jewish policy' of the Soviet bloc countries was coordinated and orchestrated from Moscow and by the single countries. The archival material will prove that the ruling communist parties were restlessly preoccupied with the 'Jewish question.' This preoccupation, which kept the whole issue alive in the decades of communist rule, explains to a great extent its open reemergence in the time of transition and in the post-communist period"--Provided by publisher

    Abstract: "Greg Burgess's important new study explores the short life of the High Commission for Refugees (Jewish and Other) Coming from Germany, from its creation by the League of Nations in October 1933 to the resignation of High Commissioner, James G. McDonald, in December 1935. The book relates the history of the first stage of refugees from Germany through the prism of McDonald and the High Commission. It analyses the factors that shaped the Commission's formation, the undertakings the Commission embarked upon and its eventual failure owing to external complications. The League of Nations and the Refugees from Nazi Germany argues that, in spite of the Commission's failure, the refugees from Nazi Germany and the High Commission's work mark a turn in conceptions of international humanitarian responsibilities when a state defies standards of proper behaviour towards its citizens. From this point on, it was no longer considered sufficient or acceptable for states to respect the sovereign rights of another if the rights of citizens were being violated. Greg Burgess discusses this idea, amongst others, in detail as part of what is a crucial volume for all scholars and students of Nazi Germany, the Holocaust and modern Jewish history "--

    Abstract: Zum 60. Jahrestag der Befreiung des Konzentrationslagers Auschwitz Das Auschwitz-Album ist ein einzigartiges Dokument. Es zeigt aus der Perspektive der Täter einen einzigen Tag eines im Mai 1944 in Auschwitz angekommenen Transports ungarischer Juden. Systematisch photographiert ein SS-Mann die Menschen und hält alle Stationen dieses Tages von der Ankunft über die Selektion bis hin zum Warten vor den Gaskammern emotionslos fest. Diese Aufnahmen stellt er dann zu einem Album zusammen. Neben den Bildern in diesem Album existieren nur ganz wenige - heimlich gemachte - Photos aus Auschwitz aus den Kriegsjahren. Unter den Deportierten befindet sich auch Lili Jacob. Sie überlebt Auschwitz, im April 1945 wird sie nach Aufenthalt in weiteren Lagern im Konzentrationslager Mittelbau-Dora befreit. Nach einem Schwächeanfall wird sie in einem Zimmer in einer ehemaligen SS-Kaserne untergebracht. Dort entdeckt sie - es ist ein beinahe unglaublicher Zufall - eben dieses Album. Sie erkennt auf den Aufnahmen ihren Rabbiner, Verwandte und auch sich selbst. Lili Jacob nimmt das Auschwitz-Album an sich. 1980 übergibt Lili Jacob das Album zur Aufbewahrung und als ewiges Mahnmal der Gedenkstätte Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. Dort gelingt es in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Museum Auschwitz durch intensive Nachforschungen, viele der Menschen auf den Photographien zu identifizieren und ihnen ihre Namen, ihre Einzigartigkeit und Individualität zurückzugeben. Auch darin liegt eine Besonderheit dieser Photo-Dokumentation. Der Wallstein Verlag veröffentlicht das Auschwitz-Album in Zusammenarbeit mit der Gedenkstätte Yad Vashem zum 60. Jahrestag der Befreiung des Konzentrationslagers Auschwitz-Birkenau am 27. Januar 2005

Geduldig hat Alwin Meyer über Jahrzehnte hinweg die Kinder von Auschwitz gesucht, einfühlsam mit ihnen gesprochen und ihr Vertrauen gewonnen. Hass-Parolen auf antiisraelischen Demonstrationen in Berlin, Frankfurt, im Ruhrgebiet, einseitige Berichterstattung und Kritik an Israel in Medien, Parteien (SPD, Linke), evangelischer Kirche, unter Intellektuellen (Martin Walser, Günter Grass, Jakob Augstein "haben den Antisemitismus salonfähig gemacht"). Sie haben viele Gespräche geführt, mit einem israelischen Journalisten in Berlin oder der dortigen Leiterin des Jüdischen Museums, die von ihren Erfahrungen, Befindlichkeiten erzählen und die versuchen, eine Erklärung für den Antisemitismus im Nachkriegsdeutschland zu finden. Das Buch klärt über den in Deutschland vorhandenen Antisemitismus auf, macht die Angst der hier lebenden Juden deutlich. Für eine legitime Kritik an Israel fordern die Autoren objektive Informationsgrundlagen. Dafür bietet das Buch zu wenig: Kritik wird in Nebensätzen und verkürzt behandelt, wichtige kritische Stimmen aus Israel fehlen völlig. Zur Diskussion. (2)

    Abstract: "From 1938 until 1943 - before the German occupation and accompanying Holocaust - Fascist Italy drafted and enforced a comprehensive set of anti-Semitic laws. Notwithstanding later rationalizations, the laws were enforced and administered with a high degree of severity and resulted in serious, and in some cases permanent, damage to the Italian Jewish community. Written from the perspective of an American legal scholar, this book constitutes the first truly comprehensive survey of the Race Laws in the English language. Based on an exhaustive review of Italian legal, administrative, and judicial sources, together with archives of the Italian Jewish community, Professor Michael A. Livingston demonstrates the zeal but also the occasional ambivalence and contradictions with which the Race Laws were applied and assimilated by the Italian legal order and ordinary citizens. Although frequently depressing, the history of the Race Laws also involves numerous examples of personal courage and idealism, and provides a useful and timely study of what happens when otherwise decent people are confronted with an evil and unjust legal order"--
