Abstract:
An expanded version of a paper delivered at a conference held in Göttingen, June 2003. Notes that in their cooperation with Nazi slaughter of the Jews, Lithuanians exhibited exceptional hatred and brutality, yet there was little in prewar Lithuanian-Jewish relations to foretell such a development; the government respected and financed Jewish cultural autonomy. However, Lithuanian nationalists resented the fact that most Jews did not speak Lithuanian. This ignorance of the language also hindered friendly contact between the two populations. Nationalists also resented Jewish near-monopoly in commerce and the professions. In the countryside there was a revival of the blood libel. However, the situation of the Jews was, on the whole, better than in Poland and many other European countries.
