Abstract:
Freudenberg was the head of the Refugee Department of the World Council of Churches in Geneva during World War II. Discusses his activities on behalf of Protestants and Jews persecuted by the Nazis. Freudenberg's voluntary resignation from the German diplomatic service in 1935 was related to the Jewish origins of his wife. During 1935-38 he studied theology and became a pastor in the Confessing Church in Germany. From 1938, Freudenberg was active in refugee work in Germany, England (1939), and Switzerland (1939-45). In Geneva he cooperated with Gerhard Riegner, the general secretary of the World Jewish Congress. After the war Freudenberg returned to Germany. He tried to induce the German Protestant churches to admit to the guilt of the German people for the persecution of the Jews and confess it. Freudenberg was also involved in theological work toward a new relationship between Christians and Jews.
