    Abstract: "Solomon's image as a wise king and the founder of Jerusalem Temple has become a fixture of Jewish, Christian, and Islamic literature. Yet, there are essential differences between the portraits of Solomon that are presented in the Hebrew Bible. In this volume, Isaac Kalimi explores these differences, which reflect divergent historical contexts, theological and didactic concepts, stylistic and literary techniques, and compositional methods among the biblical historians. He highlights the uniqueness of each portrayal of Solomon - his character, birth, early life, ascension, and Temple building - through a close comparison of the early and late biblical historiographies. Whereas the authors of Samuel- Kings stay closely to their sources and offer an apology for Solomon's kingship, including its more questionable aspects, the Chronicler freely rewrites his sources in order to present the life of Solomon as he wished it to be. The volume will serve scholars and students seeking to understand biblical texts within their ancient Near Eastern contexts"--

Schon zur Zeit des Alten Israel wurde ein Tag im Jahr zu eben jenem Zweck formalisiert, der sogenannte „Tag der Versöhnung“ (Jom Kippur). Jahrhundert weit verbreitet: männlich - weiblich, Produktion - Reproduktion, Verstand - Gefühl, Interpret - Virtuose, Heilige - Hure, deutsch - undeutsch, christlich - jüdisch, Geist - Natur usw. Wer als Musikkritiker, Musikwissenschaftler oder Biograph eine Wahrnehmung zu beschreiben und zu bewerten hatte, bediente sich gern dieser Topoi, um seine Wahrnehmung im Feld dieser Markierungen zu verorten, um Urteilen Kontur zu verleihen und sie in Rezeptionsraster einzufügen, die er auch bei seinen LeserInnen vermuten konnte. Das Anliegen dieses Buches ist es, verschiedene dieser Dichotomien zueinander ins Verhältnis zu setzen und insbesondere diejenigen Wertungen, die mit dem Gegensatzpaar männlich - weiblich verknüpft sind, mit den Wertungen anderer Dichotomien abzugleichen.     Abstract: Eva-Maria Schrage untersucht in ihrer Studie, wie junge Jüdinnen und Juden ihre Religion heute leben. Zugleich geht sie der Frage nach, wie Rabbiner, Rabbinerinnen und religiöse Gemeinschaften damit umgehen, dass die Religion im Leben vieler Jüdinnen und Juden heute eine untergeordnete Rolle spielt. Die Grundlage der Studie sind sowohl narrative Interviews religiöser Führungspersönlichkeiten als auch biographische Erzählungen von Mitgliedern verschiedener jüdischer Gemeinden. In der Beschneidungsdebatte 2012 wurde erstmals in der deutschen Nachkriegsgeschichte eine religiöse Praxis des Judentums öffentlich diskutiert. Unabhängig davon gibt es innerhalb des hiesigen Judentums schon länger vielfältige Diskussionen darüber, wie man die Religion in der Gegenwartsgesellschaft praktizieren soll.

    Abstract: Despite scholars’ ongoing historical and sociological investigations into the ancient family, the right and the status of the firstborn son have been rarely explored by NT scholars, and this topic has not attracted the careful attention that it deserves. This work offers a study of the meaning of the firstborn son in the New Testament paying specific attention to the concept of primogeniture in the Old Testament and Jewish literature. This study argues that primogeniture was a unique institution in Jewish society, and that the title of the firstborn son indicates his access to the promise of Israel, and is associated with the right of the inheritance (i.e., primogeniture) including the Land and the special status of Israel

    Abstract: In Essen im antiken Judentum und Urchristentum untersucht Christina Eschner die Auseinandersetzungen zum jüdischen Gesetz innerhalb des Urchristentums vor dem Hintergrund vergleichbarer Diskurse im antiken Judentum. Ziel ist es, die urchristliche Praxis des Gesetzes in ihrem größeren Kontext darzustellen und ihr gegebenenfalls einen bestimmten Platz im facettenreichen Bild der zeitgenössischen jüdischen Strömungen zuzuweisen. Dabei finden Schriften aus Qumran, dem griechischsprachigen und dem rabbinischen Judentum Berücksichtigung. Der Fokus liegt auf Vorschriften zu verbotenen Speisen, zur Tischgemeinschaft und zur erlaubten Art und Weise der Nahrungsaufnahme. Auch pagane Traditionen werden einbezogen. Damit ist diese Studie besonders interdisziplinär ausgerichtet. Sie bewegt sich an der Schnittstelle zwischen Themenfeldern der neutestamentlichen Wissenschaft, der Altphilologie, der Alten Geschichte und der Judaistik. In Essen im antiken Judentum und Urchristentum Christina Eschner examines the Early Christian disputes about the Jewish law against the background of Ancient Jewish discourses on commands of the law, in order to situate the Early Christian practice of the law within its broader context. Jewish sources include the Dead Sea Scrolls, Jewish writings in Greek and early rabbinic texts. This study focusses on rules concerning prohibited food, table fellowship and the permissible way of food intake. Pagan traditions are also considered. Thus, the work has an interdisciplinary orientation, discussing issues at the junction of New Testament studies, Classics, Ancient History and Jewish studies. It concludes that Early Christian food discourses do not aim for the complete abolition of the law

    Abstract: Seit Thomas Morus’ Utopia sind in den vergangenen 500 Jahren zahlreiche literarische Werke erschienen, die eine bessere Welt entwerfen. Im Film scheint die positive Utopie dagegen inexistent. Die bisherige Forschung konzentrierte sich fast ausschließlich auf dystopische Spielfilme, da positive Szenarien den Anforderungen des Mediums angeblich zuwiderlaufen. Bilder einer besseren Welt wählt einen anderen Ansatz und nimmt, ausgehend von der Erkenntnis, dass auch literarische Utopien primär als Reaktionen auf eine missliche Gegenwart und nicht als unterhaltende Erzählungen gedacht sind, mit dem Dokumentar- und Propagandafilm einen bisher kaum erforschten Bereich in den Fokus. Die Studie baut auf aktuellen Erkenntnissen der Utopie­ und Dokumentarfilmforschung auf und behandelt ein historisch und thematisch weit gefasstes Filmkorpus. Zu den untersuchten Werken gehören zionistische Propagandafilme, filmische Stadtutopien, sozialistische Zukunftsfilme sowie Web­Videos der Terrororganisation Islamischer Staat.

Daley’s book, The Textual Basis of English Translations of the Hebrew Bible , moves us beyond existing uncertainties about the textual basis of modern Bible translations to a fresh understanding of the text-critical constitution of well-known English translations of the past four hundred years. Most translations depart from the Masoretic Text selectively, and in-depth analysis of their textual decisions leads (1) to the identification of distinct periods in the textual history of the English Bible, (2) to a classification of the translations by eclectic type, and (3) to the observation that each translation is ultimately unique from a text-critical perspective. The study then revisits the topic of the text to be translated in Bibles intended for the wider public

    Abstract: Leser kennen Lyrik vor allem aus Anthologien. „Jüdische Lyrik“ wird dabei meist mit der Dichtung von Shoah-Überlebenden assoziiert. Jüdische Herausgeber sammelten jedoch schon viel früher jüdische Dichtung. Den Anspruch, für eine Gruppe zu sprechen und damit ihr Bild in der Öffentlichkeit mitzubestimmen, machte die Gattung Anthologie nicht nur für literarisch Ambitionierte attraktiv, sondern auch für unterschiedliche politische Gruppen. Unter Titeln wie „Junge Harfen“ (1903), „Lyrische Dichtung deutscher Juden“ (1920) oder „Jüdische Volkslieder“ (1935) versuchten Kulturzionisten, eigenständige jüdische Dichtungstraditionen zu etablieren. Doch auch alternative kulturpolitische Konzepte wählen die Anthologie als Mittel, wie etwa in Julius Moses‘ Anthologie „Hebräische Melodien“ (1920), die das Jüdische über das Thema und nicht die Herkunft bestimmt.

    Abstract: Der Nationalsozialismus im Film: kollektive Selbst- und Fremdbilder in der Berliner Republik. Die Welle an Spielfilmen, die sich seit Beginn der 2000er Jahre mit der nationalsozialistischen Vergangenheit beschäftigen, spiegelt die politisch-kulturelle Verarbeitung der deutschen Vereinigung im Jahr 1990 und deren Folgen für die Erinnerungskultur. Antonia Schmid untersucht diese für Geschichtsbilder höchst einflussreichen Spielfilme auf ihre Kollektivkonstruktionen, darunter »Der Untergang« (Oliver Hirschbiegel, D/I/A 2004) und »Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter« (Philipp Kadelbach, D 2013). Ihre ikonologische Diskursanalyse von über 40 Filmen verknüpft politik-, kultur- und sozialwissenschaftliche Ansätze mit solchen aus der Bild- und Filmwissenschaft und verbindet die Antisemitismusforschung mit der Memorialgeschichte von Nationalsozialismus und Schoah. Die Analyse zeigt, dass bestimmte Motive immer wiederkehren: Besonders das »Jüdische« dient weiterhin als Negativfolie für deutsche Identität, aber auch slawophobe und antikommunistische Ideologeme sind stark verbreitet. Die »deutschen« Identifikationsfiguren hingegen werden meist als Opfer und Helden inszeniert. So entsprechen Spektrum und Hierarchie dieser Bilder noch heute in großen Teilen jenen der nationalsozialistischen »Volksgemeinschaft«. [Angaben aus der Verlagsmeldung]

    Abstract: The development of the Biblical Hebrew Vowels investigates the sound changes affecting the Proto-Northwest-Semitic vocalic phonemes and their reflexes in Tiberian Biblical Hebrew. Contrary to many previous approaches, Benjamin Suchard shows that these developments can all be described as phonetically regular sound laws. This confirms that despite its unique transmission history, Hebrew behaves like other languages in this regard. Many Hebrew sound changes have traditionally been explained as reflecting non-phonetic conditioning. These include the Canaanite Shift of *ā to *ō, tonic and pre-tonic lengthening, diphthong contraction, Philippi's Law, the Law of Attenuation, and the apocope of short, unstressed vowels. By reconsidering reconstructions and re-evaluating phonetic conditions, this work shows how the Biblical Hebrew forms regularly derive from their Proto-Northwest-Semitic precursors

    Abstract: "Time in the Babylonian Talmud explores how rabbinic jurists' language, reasoning, and storytelling reveal their assumptions about what we call time. By "time," I do not mean measurements of duration such as hours, minutes, or days. There are more elastic and capacious approaches to time in the Babylonian Talmud (Bavli). As Virginia Woolf wrote, "An hour, once it lodges in the queer element of the human spirit, may be stretched to fifty or a hundred times its clock length; on the other hand, an hour may be accurately represented on the timepiece of the mind by one second." Considering imaginative writing by modernist writers like Woolf, as well as modern philosophical writings, allows us to break away from familiar presuppositions about time and to see temporal phenomena anew even in ancient cultural artifacts. This book turns to an ancient text, the Bavli, which remains a foundational text of Jewish law and culture, and uses it to think carefully about ancient and contemporary concepts of time. As we will see, temporality permeates the most intriguing legal concepts in the Bavli and it is equally central to the Bavli's storytelling. With this book, then, I hope to move a common debate about time in classical Judaism beyond the question of whether there was or was not a concept of time in rabbinic sources. Instead, I argue for examining in detail "time-like" phenomena in rabbinic texts. This approach sheds light on rabbinic thought in its late-antique intellectual contexts and reveals what Bavli temporal thinking can contribute to contemporary theories of time"--

    Abstract: In The Authority of Law in the Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism , Vroom identifies a development in the authority of written law that took place in early Judaism. Ever since Assyriologists began to recognize that the Mesopotamian law collections did not function as law codes do today—as a source of binding obligation—scholars have grappled with the question of when the Pentateuchal legal corpora came to be treated as legally binding. Vroom draws from legal theory to provide a theoretical framework for understanding the nature of legal authority, and develops a methodology for identifying instances in which legal texts were treated as binding law by ancient interpreters. This method is applied to a selection of legal-interpretive texts: Ezra-Nehemiah, Temple Scroll, the Qumran rule texts, and the Samaritan Pentateuch

    Abstract: "Converts in the Dead Sea Scrolls examines the meaning of the term gēr in the Dead Sea Scrolls. While often interpreted as a resident alien, this study of the term as it is employed within scriptural rewriting in the Dead Sea Scrolls concludes that the gēr is a Gentile convert to Judaism. Contrasting the gēr in the Dead Sea Scrolls against scriptural predecessors, Carmen Palmer finds that a conversion is possible by means of mutable ethnicity. Furthermore, mutable features of ethnicity in the sectarian movement affiliated with the Dead Sea Scrolls include shared kinship, connection to land, and common culture in the practice of circumcision. The sectarian movement is not as closed toward Gentiles as has been commonly considered"--

    Abstract: "Romane wie Jettchen Gebert oder Henriette Jacoby (1906/1908) hatten seinerzeit einen festen Platz in den Bücherschränken des Bildungsbürgertums. Ihr Autor Georg Hermann (1871–1943) gehört wie Jakob Wassermann zu den einstigen Erfolgsautoren, die, anders als viele ihrer Zeitgenossen und trotz mancher Neuauflagen, heute kaum noch bekannt sind. Dies geht mit einem eher geringen Interesse der Germanistik einher. Erste Arbeiten wie die Monographie des Niederländers Van Liere (1974) warfen dabei bereits die Frage nach Hermanns jüdischer Identität auf. Sie wird aber erst in diesem Buch umfassend und anhand einer konzisen Werkanalyse untersucht. Viele Zeitgenossen empfanden Georg Hermann, im Berliner Bürgertum wie im jüdischen Denken zuhause, als »jüdisch«, ja teils sogar als einen »der jüdischsten Autoren« (Van Liere) – obgleich er Religiöses weitgehend ausklammerte und das »Ostjudentum« kritisch sah. Seine Sujets fand er im deutsch-jüdischen Milieu und oft unter gesellschaftlichen Außenseitern. Die Verbindung von seinem Werk und seinem Judentum blieb somit zu klären. Simone Langer geht dabei zahlreichen intertextuellen Bezügen (Keilson, Roth, Schnitzler, Ehrenstein, Mann, Kafka) nach und macht den Diskurs um jüdische Identität – maßgeblich von Armin A. Wallas und Andreas Kilcher bestimmt – zu einem Ausgangspunkt ihrer Überlegungen. Nicht erst der Antisemitismus gab Anstöße zu Hermanns bewußter Auseinandersetzung mit jüdischer Identität schon in seinen ersten Werken. Diese erschließt sich in seiner literarischen und essayistischen Gestaltung von Themen wie jüdischer Ethik, Lebensbejahung, Europäertum, dem Wert von Erinnerung, und »ungesichertem Leben« insbesondere von Juden. Die Frage nach der Zukunft des Judentums stellte Hermann am Ende angesichts des Scheiterns der deutsch-jüdischen Beziehung – für das schließlich auch seine Ermordung in Auschwitz steht."     Abstract: "Notions of women as found in the Bible have had an incalculable impact on Western cultures, influencing perspectives on marriage, kinship, legal practice, political status, and general attitudes. Women and Exile is drawn from three separate strands to address and analyse this phenomenon. The first examines how women were conceptualized and represented during the exilic period. The second focuses on methodological possibilities and drawbacks connected to investigating women and exile. The third reviews current prominent literature on the topic, with responses from authors. With chapters from a range of contributors, topics move from an analysis of Ruth as a woman returning to her homeland, and issues concerning the foreign presence who brings foreign family members into the midst of a community, and how this is dealt with, through the intermarriage crisis portrayed in Ezra 9-10, to an analysis of Judean constructions of gender in the exilic and early post-exilic periods. The contributions show an exciting range of the best scholarship on women and foreign identities, with important consequences for how the foreign/known is perceived, and what that has meant for women through the centuries"--

    Abstract: Die amerikanische Serie TV-Serie "Holocaust" wurde im Januar 1979 in Deutschland ausgestrahlt und hatte eine damals nicht vorstellbare Wirkung. Über 20 Millionen Menschen sahen das Medienereignis und wurden so intensiv und emotional enorm berührend mit dem nationalsozialistischen Massenmord konfrontiert. Die Ausstrahlung von "Holocaust" gilt als erinnerungsgeschichtliche Zäsur und Meilenstein in der Aufarbeitung der NS-Gräuel. Der Begriff Holocaust wurde 1979 "Wort des Jahres" und gab jenem Verbrechen, das Winston Churchill noch "crime without a name" bezeichnete, einen Namen. Lange Zeit hatten die Deutschen noch unreflektiert in der nationalsozialistischen Terminologie von der "Endlösung" gesprochen. Der Erfolg der amerikanischen "Holocaust"-Produktion ermutigte deutsche Rundfunkanstalten, eigene Serien zum Dritten Reich in Auftrag zu geben. Sie hatten eine "visuelle Integration" jüdischer Figuren zum Ziel. Darunter verstand der Schriftsteller Wolfdietrich Schnurre ein gesellschaftspolitisches Anliegen: Durch das Sichtbarmachen jüdischer Kultur im Fernsehen sollte diese nicht nur ins Fernsehen, sondern auch in das Bewusstsein der bundesrepublikanischen Gesellschaft gerückt werden. Ausgehend vom gesellschaftspädagogischen Auftrag und Selbstverständnis des öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunk zeigt diese Studie, wie das normative Anliegen der "visuellen Integration" in den erinnerungspolitisch aufgeladenen 1980er-Jahren im Spannungsfeld von Aufklärungswillen und Geschichtsvergessenheit nur bedingt erreicht wurde. Als Fallbeispiele dienen "Soll und Haben", "Holocaust", "Ein Stück Himmel", "Heimat", "Levin und Gutman" sowie "Kir Royal".

It provides a missing link in the chain of research on the topic of messianism and contributes to the understanding of the connection between female transgression and redemption, from the Bible through Rabbinic literature until the Zohar. The discussion of the centrality of the mother image in Judeo-Christian culture and the parallels between the appearance of Mary in the Gospels and the Davidic Mothers in the Hebrew Bible, stresses mutual representations of "the mother of the messiah" in Christian and Jewish imaginaire. Through the prism of gender studies and by stressing questions of femininity, motherhood and sexuality, the subject appears in a new light.     Abstract: "Der längste altfranzösische Text in hebräischer Graphie, genannt Fevres, ist ein theoretischer medizinischer Fachtext und besteht aus einer Kompilation von Werken salernitanischer Tradition, die in dem Traktat erstmals auf Französisch vorliegen. Der anonyme jüdische Autor lebte im Grenzgebiet Champagne - Lothringen - Burgund, und stellte die Fieberschrift vermutlich eingangs des 14. Jahrhunderts zusammen, indem er kanonische Texte v.a. aus dem Lateinischen in die Volkssprache übersetzte. Fevres ist in einem einizigen Manuskript, möglicherweise sogar als Autograph (Berlin SBPK Ms. or. oct. 512), überliefert. Die Autorin ermöglicht auch Romanisten, die das hebräische Alphabet nicht lesen, durch eine Teiledition in vier Schritten (Textedition - Transliteration - hypothetischer, altfranzösischer Lesetext - Übersetzung) einen Zugang zu diesem aussergewöhnlichen Text. Der Edition wird eine ausführliche Einleitung vorangestellt, die u.a. die jüdisch-französische Texttradition darstellt sowie quellenkundliche und sprachlichen Merkmale von Fevres näher untersucht. Umfangreiche Glossare, die den medizinischen Fachwortschatz mit zahlreichen Erstbelegen erfassen, runden die Arbeit ab. Diese Arbeit wurde mit dem Kurt-Ringger-Preis 2017 ausgezeichnet"--

    Abstract: Fighting over the Bible explores the bitter conflicts between main stream Jews and their internal and external opponents, especially between particular Jewish groups such as Pharisees, Sadducees, Qumranites, Samaritans, Rabbanites and Karaites, as well as with Christians and Muslims regarding their interpretations of Jewish Scripture. The Hebrew Bible/Old Testament is an important sacred text for all branches of the Abrahamic faiths, but it has more often divided than unified them. This volume explores and exemplifies the roots of these interpretive conflicts and controversies and traces the rich exegetical and theological approaches that grew out of them.     Abstract: This volume presents the main lectures of the 22nd Congress of the International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament (IOSOT) held in Stellenbosch, South Africa, in September 2016. Sixteen internationally distinguished scholars present their current research on the Hebrew Bible, including the literary history of the Hebrew text, its Greek translation and history of interpretation. Some focus on archeological and iconographic sources and the reconstruction of ancient Israelite religion while others discuss the formation of the biblical text and its impact for cultural memory. The volume gives readers a representative view of the most recent developments in the study of the Old Testament

    Abstract: In Hebrews and the Temple Philip Church argues that the silence of Hebrews concerning the temple does not mean that the author is not interested in the temple. He writes to encourage his readers to abandon their preoccupation with it and to follow Jesus to their eschatological goal. Following extensive discussions of attitudes to the temple in the literature of Second Temple Judaism, Church turns to Hebrews and argues that the temple is presented there as a symbolic foreshadowing of the eschatological dwelling of God with his people. Now that the eschatological moment has arrived with the exaltation of Christ to the right hand of God, preoccupation with the temple and its rituals must cease
