Wie hängen die Legende über die Entstehung der Septuaginta und die exegetische Praxis des alexandrinischen Judentums (vor allem Philons) zusammen? Das Buch plädiert für eine einheitliche exegetische Tradition in Alexandrien, welche beide Gestalten der Tora – die griechische und die hebräische – berücksichtigt
    Abstract: The translation of the Torah into Greek in Alexandria is an intriguing puzzle. Why was it undertaken at all? Was it a need of the Alexandrian Jews? Or did the Jewish wisdom intrigue the Egyptian ruler? Is the legend of the miraculous creation of the Septuagint a manifesto of cultural assimilation into the Hellenic culture? Does the Alexandrian Greek biblical exegesis, especially that of Philo, aim to break with the Hebrew tradition? According to this book, Philo, although not fluent in Hebrew himself, moves in the same shared Hebrew-Greek Torah universe that a closer look on the Septuagint legend reveals as well. Die Übersetzung der Tora ins Griechische in Alexandrien ist ein intrigierendes Rätsel. Warum wurde sie überhaupt unternommen? War sie ein Bedürfnis der alexandrinischen Juden? Oder machte die jüdische Weisheit den ägyptischen Herrscher neugierig? Ist die Legende über die wundersame Entstehung der Septuaginta ein Manifest der kulturellen Assimilation an die hellenische Kultur? Bezweckt die alexandrinische griechische Bibelexegese, vor allem diejenige Philons, den Bruch mit der hebräischen Tradition und die Anpassung an die hellenistische Philosophie?     Abstract: Erstmals wird hier der protestantische Pastor und Widerstandskämpfer Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) mit dem jüdischen Religionsphilosophen und Aktivisten Abraham J. Heschel (1907-1972) biographisch-werkgenetisch verglichen und nachgezeichnet, dass beide ein zunehmend relationales Denken antreibt, welches sie mithilfe ihrer Bibelhermeneutik aus hebräischer Perspektive ableiten. Teil 1 analysiert die Frühphase Bonhoeffers und Heschels. Mithilfe von Phänomenologie, Existentialismus, Dialogik und Tatsächlichkeit der Offenbarung Gottes etablieren beide einen dritten Weg – sog. "relationales Denken" –, der ihre (pietistische resp. chassidische) Herzensfrömmigkeit mit wissenschaftlich-akademischer Argumentation versöhnt. Teil 2 zeichnet die Mittelphase beider nach, in der die spirituelle Praxis durch Bibel und Gebet das relationale Denken erweitern. Teil 3 zeichnet schließlich nach, wie Bonhoeffer und Heschel dadurch hin zu praktisch-prophetischem Aktivismus gelangen, für den beide gleichermaßen bekannt geworden sind – deren Wurzeln bereits in ihrer Frühphase liegen. Somit gibt diese Untersuchung neue Perspektiven auf Bonhoeffer und Heschel individuell, jedoch auch Gedankenanstöße für den christlich-jüdischen Dialog, biblische Hermeneutik, Spiritualität uvm
    Abstract: This volume is the first to compare the biographies and work genesis of the Protestant pastor and resistance fighter Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) and the Jewish religious philosopher and activist Abraham J. Heschel (1907-1972). The author shows how both drew their heavily relational thinking from the (Hebrew) bible and personal piety, and reconcile it with rational thinking, which ultimately led them to engage in prophetic practical activism

This change is then analyzed within the framework of Novak's covenantal theology and his developing view of redemption in particular.     Abstract: "Juden zählen nicht" - so der Originaltitel des Buches - wenn es um Diskriminierung von Minderheiten geht, obwohl sie seit Jahrhunderten ausgegrenzt und verfolgt werden. Sie werden als weiss, privilegiert und mächtig wahrgenommen, können also angeblich keinem Rassismus ausgesetzt sein. Rezension (ekz): Der britische Komiker und Autor David Baddiel (geb. 1964), dessen jüdische Mutter aus Deutschland vor den Nazis floh, beschreibt in seinem Buch anhand unzähliger Beispiele, dass Antisemitismus in aktuellen Anti-Rassismus-Debatten so gut wie keine Rolle spielt. Antijüdischen Aussagen oder Handlungen wird weniger Aufmerksamkeit entgegengebracht als der Diskriminierung anderer Gruppen, Antisemitismus gilt als Rassismus 2. Klasse. Jüdinnen und Juden werden als weiss angesehen, können ihr Judentum verstecken und sind daher vermeintlich keinem Rassismus ausgesetzt. Auch antisemitische Stereotypen finden immer wieder Eingang in diese Debatten, indem Jüdinnen und Juden Macht, Privilegien und Reichtum zugeschrieben werden. - Baddiels Buch ist keine systematische Abhandlung, er liefertauch keine umfassende Ursachenanalyse. Vielmehr ist es ein sehr persönliches Buch, lebendig geschrieben, das - auch wenn er sich bei seinen Beispielen vor allem auf den britischen Kontext bezieht - jede Menge Anregung zum Nachdenken und Diskutieren bietet

    Abstract: The personal and professional life of Bruno Kreisky (1911-1990), Austria's long-serving Socialist chancellor from August 1970 to May 1983, has been the focus of many books and articles. However, his ambiguous and complex relationship to his Jewishness, the State of Israel, and Zionism, as well as his connections to his overall political project and global aspirations, remain only partially researched. This book studies and analyzes these more systematically and comprehensively and places Kreisky in a comparative perspective with other twentieth-century European Jewish politicians who attained similar pinnacles of power. At the same time, the book will show that Bruno Kreisky was among the most influential and controversial political leaders since World War II. The book revolves around understanding and illuminating the myriad ways in which Kreisky's Jewishness was – or was not – a formative factor in his treatment of "Jewish" questions within Austrian politics, Austrian-Israeli relations, and his active engagement in Middle Eastern affairs. This deeper understanding mainly emerges through examining Kreisky's actions during several pivotal events like the Kreisky-Peter-Wiesenthal affair, the Waldheim affair, the 1973 Marchegg incident, and his overall relationship to Zionism, the State of Israel, and the Palestinian Arab world. This book is not a comprehensive biography of Kreisky. Instead, it attempts to document and place Kreisky's fraught engagement with his Jewishness and the related sensitive issues that touched upon it in a historical, political, ideological, and personal context. This mainly comes down to the entangled and always-ambiguous politics of identity, especially his understanding of his Jewishness.

Rather than treating these figures as anomalies to be justified or explained away, Max K. Strassfeld argues that they profoundly shaped ideas about law, as the rabbis constructed intricate taxonomies of gender across dozens of texts to understand an array of cultural tensions. Showing how rabbis employed eunuchs and androgynes to define proper forms of masculinity, Strassfeld emphasizes the unique potential of these figures to not only establish the boundary of law but exceed and transform it. This was an era when what it meant to be Jewish--and what it meant to be European--were undergoing dramatic changes. Baron Hirsch was at the center of these historic shifts. Die Zusammenschau von Texten, archäologischen Funden, soziologischen Hintergründen und theologischen Argumentationsmustern verdeutlicht, wie unterschiedlich identity markers im Frühjudentum gelebt wurden und wie daraus die späteren christlichen Positionen entstanden. Diese Neuauflage von "Das Frühjudentum und die Anfänge des Christentums" wurde für die Aufnahme in die Studienbücher Theologie stark erweitert und durchgehend überarbeitet. Tiwald unterstreicht, dass das Christentum nur aus dem Frühjudentum verständlich wird, erklärt, warum sich die Wege trotzdem trennten, und verdeutlicht, dass Christen bleibend auf ihre jüdischen Wurzeln verwiesen sind.

    Abstract: Recent research has considered how changing imperial contexts influence conceptions of Jewishness among ruling elites (esp. Eckhardt, Ethnos und Herrschaft, 2013). This study integrates other, often marginal, conceptions with elite perspectives. It uses the ethnic boundary making model, an empirically based sociological model, to link macro-level characteristics of the social field with individual agency in ethnic construction. It uses a wide range of written sources as evidence for constructions of Jewishness and relates these to a local-specific understanding of demographic and institutional characteristics, informed by material culture. The result is a diachronic study of how institutional changes under Seleucid, Hasmonean, and Early Roman rule influenced the ways that members of the ruling elite, retainer class, and marginalized groups presented their preferred visions of Jewishness. These sometimes-competing visions advance different strategies to maintain, rework, or blur the boundaries between Jews and others. The study provides the next step toward a thick description of Jewishness in antiquity by introducing needed systematization for relating written sources from different social strata with their contexts

    Abstract: In this volume Bible Studies scholar Yitzhak (Itzik) Peleg offers an educational, values-based approach to the cycle of Jewish holidays—festivals and holy days—as found in the Jewish calendar. These special days play a dual role: they reflect a sense of identity with, and belonging to, the Jewish people, while simultaneously shaping that identity and sense of belonging. The biblical command “And you shall tell your son” (Exodus 13:8) is meant to ensure that children will become familiar with the history of their people via the experience of celebrating the holidays. It is the author’s claim, however, that this command must be preceded by another educational command: “And you shall listen to your son and your daughter.” The book examines the various Jewish holidays and ways in which they are celebrated, while focusing on three general topics: identity, belonging, memory. Throughout the generations, observance of the holidays has developed and changed, from time to time and place to place. These changes have enabled generations of Jews, in their various communities, to define their own Jewish identity and sense of belonging

    Abstract: Gelacht und gedacht, erzählt und erzogen wurde in jiddischer Sprache seit dem Hochmittelalter. Auf den letzten Blättern gelehrter Bücher finden wir Rezepte, Zaubersprüche und Gebete. Gereimte Epen kursierten in Abschriften zum geselligen Vortrag. Ein Konvolut von 1382 aus Kairo bezeugt, dass Juden mit deutscher Literatur bestens vertraut waren und sie witzig adaptierten.Aus Geldnot begannen findige Unternehmer im frühen 16. Jahrhundert in Krakau, Augsburg und Venedig mit dem Druck jiddischer Bücher. Jetzt hatten auch Frauen und ungelehrte Männer Zugang zur Bibel und den Religionsvorschriften. Deutsche Reformatoren sahen in jiddischen Bibeln eine Gelegenheit zur Judenmission. Doch die Verbreitung jiddischer Bücher schürte nicht die Feuer des Aufbruchs, sondern stärkte den Zusammenhalt der Gemeinschaft. Sie machte die Frauen unabhängiger und selbstbewusster, denn sie kannten nun die Gesetze.     Abstract: Zwischen 1918 und 1921 werden in der Ukraine über 100 000 Juden von Bauern, Städtern und Soldaten ermordet, die sie für die Russische Revolution und deren Folgen verantwortlich machen. Ganz normale Bürgerinnen und Bürger berauben plötzlich ihre jüdischen Nachbarn, brennen ihre Häuser nieder, zerreißen ihre Tora-Rollen, missbrauchen sie sexuell und töten sie. Der Holocaust-Historiker Jeffrey Veidlinger hat diese Welle genozidaler Gewalt rekonstruiert, bei der ganz unterschiedliche Gruppen von Menschen alle zu demselben Ergebnis kamen – dass die Ermordung von Juden eine akzeptable Antwort auf ihre Probleme sei. Als die Gewalt in die Kleinstadt Slovetschno kam, ist Rosa Zaks erst sieben Jahre alt. Doch sie wird ihr Leben lang nicht vergessen können, wie sie und ihre Geschwister mitten in der Nacht von der Mutter geweckt und auf den Dachboden des Nachbarhauses gebracht wurden. Aus ihrem Versteck müssen die Kinder mit ansehen, wie ein Pogrom gegen die jüdischen Bewohner des Ortes entfesselt wird... Anhand von lange vernachlässigtem Archivmaterial, darunter Tausende neu entdeckte Zeugenaussagen, Prozessakten und offizielle Anordnungen, zeigt der renommierte Historiker Jeffrey Veidlinger, warum die Pogrome in Osteuropa eine Art Vorgeschichte des Holocaust bilden. Das überaus differenzierte Bild dieser heute weitgehend in Vergessenheit geratenen Ereignisse, das durch die Geschichten von Überlebenden, Tätern, Mitarbeitern von Hilfsorganisationen und Regierungsvertretern entsteht, verdeutlicht, warum die Juden "mitten im zivilisierten Europa" in akuter Gefahr waren, vernichtet zu werden - und ganz Europa davon wusste.

Und welche jüdischen Erfahrungen standen hinter dem europäischen Projekt? 75 Jahre nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs eröffnete das Jüdische Museum Hohenems, zusammen mit dem Volkskundemuseum Wien und dem Jüdischen Museum München, einen Debattenraum über den Zustand Europas - im Zeichen eines überall wachsenden neuen Nationalismus, der neuerdings auch die Phantasie eines "christlich-jüdischen Abendlandes" gegen Migranten in Stellung bringt. Während populistischer Egoismus das "Friedensprojekt" Europa bedroht, wird zugleich um europäische Solidarität gerungen.     Abstract: Reveals nostalgia as a new way of maintaining Jewish continuityIn 2007, the Museum at Eldridge Street opened at the site of a restored nineteenth-century synagogue originally built by some of the first Eastern European Jewish immigrants in New York City. Visitors to the museum are invited to stand along indentations on the floor where footprints of congregants past have worn down the soft pinewood. Here, many feel a palpable connection to the history surrounding them.Beyond the Synagogue argues that nostalgic activities such as visiting the Museum at Eldridge Street or eating traditional Jewish foods should be understood as American Jewish religious practices. In making the case that these practices are not just cultural, but are actually religious, Rachel B. Gross asserts that many prominent sociologists and historians have mistakenly concluded that American Judaism is in decline, and she contends that they are looking in the wrong places for Jewish religious activity. If they looked outside of traditional institutions and practices, such as attendance at synagogue or membership in Jewish Community Centers, they would see that the embrace of nostalgia provides evidence of an alternative, under-appreciated way of being Jewish and of maintaining Jewish continuity. Tracing American Jews’ involvement in a broad array of ostensibly nonreligious activities, including conducting Jewish genealogical research, visiting Jewish historic sites, purchasing books and toys that teach Jewish nostalgia to children, and seeking out traditional Jewish foods, Gross argues that these practices illuminate how many American Jews are finding and making meaning within American Judaism today

    Abstract: Federica Francesconi writes the history of the Jewish merchants who lived and prospered in the northern Italian city of Modena, capital city of the Este Duchy, during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Her protagonists are men and women who stood out within their communities but who, despite their cultural and economic prominence, were ghettoized after 1638. Their sociocultural transformation and eventual legal and political integration evolved through a complex dialogue between their Italian and Jewish identities, and without the traumatic ruptures or dramatic divides that led to the assimilation and conversion of many Jews elsewhere in Europe.In Modena, male and female Jewish identities were contoured by both cultural developments internal to the community and engagement with the broader society. The study of Lurianic and Cordoverian Kabbalah, liturgical and nondevotional Hebrew poetry, and Sabbateanism existed alongside interactions with Jesuits, converts, and inquisitors. If Modenese Jewish merchants were absent from the public discourse of the Estes, their businesses lives were nevertheless located at the very geographical and economic center of the city. They lived in an environment that gave rise to unique forms of Renaissance culture, early modern female agency, and Enlightenment practice. New Jewish ways of performing gender emerged in the seventeenth century, giving rise to what could be called an entrepreneurial female community devoted to assisting, employing, and socializing in the ghetto. Indeed, the ghetto leadership prepared both Jewish men and women for the political and legal emancipation they would eventually obtain under Napoleon. It was the cultured Modenese merchants who combined active participation in the political struggle for Italian Jewish emancipation with the creation of a special form of the Enlightenment embedded in scholarly and French-oriented lay culture that emerged within the European context

    Abstract: This book explores the fraught aftermath of the German Jewish conversionary experience through the story of one family as it grapples with the meaning of its Jewish origins in a post-Holocaust, post-conversionary milieu. Utilizing archival family texts and multiple interviews spanning three generations, beginning with the author’s German Jewish parents, 1940s refugees, and engaging the insights of contemporary scholars, the book traces the impact of a contested Jewish identity on the deconstruction and reconstruction of the Jewish self. The Holocaust as post-memory and the impact of the German Jewish culture personified by the author’s parents leads to a retrieval of a lost Jewish identity, postmodern in its implications, reinforcing the concept of Judaism as ultimately a family affair. Focusing on the personal to illuminate a complex historical phenomenon, this book proposes a new cultural history that challenges conventional boundaries of what is Jewish and what is not

    Abstract: "Angelic beings can be found throughout the Hebrew Bible, and, by late antiquity, the archangels Michael and Gabriel were as familiar as the patriarchs and matriarchs; guardian angels were as present as one's shadow; and praise of the seraphim was as sacred as the Shema prayer. Mika Ahuvia recovers once-commonplace beliefs about the divine realm and demonstrates that angels were foundational to ancient Judaism. Ancient Jewish practice centered on humans' relationships with invisible beings who acted as their intermediaries, role models, and guardians. Drawing on non-canonical sources--incantation bowls, amulets, mystical texts, and liturgical poetry--Ahuvia shows that when ancient men and women sought access to divine aid, they turned not only to their rabbis nor to God alone but often also to the angels.     Abstract: The dawn of the modern age posed challenges to all of the world’s religions – and since then, religions have countered with challenges to modernity. In Religious Responses to Modernity, seven leading scholars from Germany and Israel explore specific instances of the face-off between religious thought and modernity, in Christianity, Judaism and Islam.As co-editor Christoph Markschies remarks in his Foreword, it may seem almost trivial to say that different religions, and the various currents within them, have reacted in very different ways to the “multiple modernities” described by S.N. Eisenstadt. However, things become more interesting when the comparative perspective leads us to discover surprising similarities. Disparate encounters are connected by their transnational or national perspectives, with the one side criticizing in the interest of rationality as a model of authorization, and the other presenting revelation as a critique of a depraved form of rationality.     Abstract: For Jews, Christians and Muslims, as for all human beings, military conflicts and war remain part of the reality of the world. The authoritative writings of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, namely the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament and the Koran, as well as the theological and philosophical traditions based on them, bear witness to this fact. Showing the influence of different historical political situations, various views – sometimes quite similar, sometimes more divergent -- have developed in the three religions to justify the waging of war under certain circumstances. Such views have also been integrated in different ways into legal systems while, in certain cases, theologies have provide legitimation for military expansion and atrocities. The aim of the volume The Concept of Just War in Judaism, Christianity and Islam is to explore the respective understanding of “just war” in each one of these three religions and to make their commonalities and differences discursively visible. In addition, it highlights and explains the significance of the topic to the present time. Can the concepts developed in the Jewish, Christian and Islamic traditions in order to justify war, serve as a foundation for contemporary peace ethics? Or do religious arguments always add fuel to the fire in armed conflict? The contributions in this volume will help provide answers to these and other socially and politically relevant questions

Schon in ihrer Dissertation über den Liebesbegriff bei Augustinus entwickelte sie die Hauptmomente ihrer Lesart. Arendts starkes Konzept der »Weltlichkeit« könnte gerade heute hilfreich sein für einen Ausgleich zwischen Säkularismus und dem offenkundigen Fortwirken religiöser Überzeugungen. Obschon Arendt sich erklärtermaßen als säkulare Denkerin verstand, öffnet ihr Werk Perspektiven einer neuen, vielleicht sogar messianischen Haltung zur Weltlichkeit und Endlichkeit des Lebens.     Abstract: Judenfeindschaft artikuliert sich sehr unterschiedlich. In den letzten Jahrzehnten ist eine Verschiebung von antijudaistischen zu antiisraelischen Diskursen zu beobachten, die gesellschaftlich erschreckend weit akzeptiert werden und nicht selten in einer judenfeindlichen Interpretation der neutestamentlichen Texte wurzeln. Ekkehard W. Stegemann und Wolfgang Stegemann machen seit vielen Jahren aufmerksam auf Judenfeindschaft und deren Deutungsmuster, die sich stets wandeln. Aspekte des Antijudaismus im Neuen Testament, Judenfeindschaft im frühen Christentum, aber auch das Verhältnis von Kirche und Israel als christliches Identitätsproblem gehören zu den Themen, die sie seit über 30 Jahren benennen.

    Abstract: "Revisionist approach to a status of apostates in medieval European rabbinic thought. View this in full screen In Brothers from Afar: Rabbinic Approaches to Apostasy and Reversion in Medieval Europe, Ephraim Kanarfogel challenges a long-held view that those who had apostatized and later returned to the Jewish community in northern medieval Europe were encouraged to resume their places without the need for special ceremony or act that verified their reversion. Kanarfogel's evidence suggests that from the late twelfth century onward, leading rabbinic authorities held that returning apostates had to undergo ritual immersion and other rites of contrition. He also argues that the shift in rabbinic positions during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries was fundamentally a response to changing Christian perceptions of Jews and was not simply an internal halakhic or rabbinic development. Brothers from Afar is divided into seven chapters.
    Abstract: Kanarfogel begins the book with Rashi (1040-1105), the pre-eminent European rabbinic authority, who favored an approach which sought to smooth the return of penitent apostates. He then goes on to explain that although Jacob Katz, a leading Jewish social historian, maintains that this more lenient approach held sway in Ashkenazic society, a series of manuscript passages indicate that Rashi's view was challenged in several significant ways by northern French Tosafists in the mid-twelfth century. German Tosafists mandated immersion for a returning apostate as a means of atonement, akin to the procedure required of a new convert. In addition, several prominent tosafists sought to downgrade the status of apostates from Judaisim who did not return, in both marital and economic issues, well beyond the place assigned to them by Rashi and others who supported his approach.
    Abstract: Although these mandates were formulated along textual and juridical lines, considerations of how to protect the Jewish communities from the inroads of increased anti-Judaism and the outright hatred expressed for the Jews as unrivaled enemies of Christianity, played a large role. Indeed, medieval Christian sources that describe how Jews dealt with those who relapsed from Christianity to Judaism are based not only on popular practices and culture but also reflect concepts and practices that had the approbation of the rabbinic elite in northern Europe. Brothers from Afar belongs in the library of every scholar of Jewish and medieval studies"--
