Abstract:
A response to the furor aroused by the discovery of articles by Paul de Man written in Belgium between December 1940-November 1942 for the Nazi-controlled newspapers "Le Soir" and "Het Vlaamsche Land." Analyzes de Man's wartime writings on the basis of the available 25 articles from "Le Soir." States that de Man was young and that his discourse was sometimes disjointed and conflicted; he welcomed German hegemony in Europe as a Flemish nationalist and in the hope of engendering a revolution in thinking. Pp. 621-632 analyze the text of "Les Juifs dans la litterature actuelle" ("Le Soir, " 4 March 1941), considered to be de Man's most antisemitic text. Contends that de Man's work after the war shows that he had broken radically with those beliefs and that a man's life-work cannot be judged on the basis of two years of his life. Derrida initiated a public discussion of the wartime texts at a colloquium held at the University of Alabama in October 1987 (published in "Responses: On Paul de Man's Wartime Journalism, " 1989). Pp. 634-637 contain the transcription of Derrida's opening address. See responses to the present article which appeared in "Critical Inquiry" 15 (Sum 1989), including a reply by Derrida.
