Abstract:
A history of the pogrom that broke out on 23 April 1666 in Mladá Boleslav, Bohemia. Relations between Christians and Jews in the town deteriorated in the first half of the 17th century, due to the growth of the town's Jewish population and economic competition between the two communities, as well as the activities of the Counter-Reformation in the area. The pretext for the riot was the noise the Jews made on a Sabbath evening which coincided with the Easter service in a nearby Catholic church. No Jews were killed during the riots, but they suffered great material losses. Using documents of the inquiries conducted by the Bohemian regency and local and ecclesiastic authorities, describes the development of the pogrom and the course of the inquiry in the subsequent two years. As a result of the riots, the town's Jewish community was fined. Draws attention to the messianic expectations of Jews in 1666 - the year of Shabbetai Zvi - as a factor in the tumult. Pp. 69-106 contain documents from the inquiries, in Latin, Czech, and German.
